Possibly, but a Contabo plan’s vCPU count cannot tell you whether it will sustain real-time 1080p encoding. Ordinary Contabo VPS plans use shared vCPUs; its Max Performance VPS, also described as VDS, documents dedicated CPU cores and reserved RAM, making it a more relevant candidate for CPU-heavy encoding. Neither specification proves a particular FFmpeg workload will run reliably around the clock. Test the exact source and settings on the instance you intend to use before relying on it.
First distinguish transcoding from relaying
Transcoding means decoding the source video and encoding it again, typically to produce a specified codec, resolution, frame rate, or bitrate. That is sustained compute work. A relay or stream-copy workflow sends already encoded video without doing the video encoding step, when the source is compatible with the required output. It can therefore have a different CPU profile from full re-encoding.
The question is not simply whether a VPS can send a live stream. It is whether your chosen server, encoder, source, and settings can continuously produce the required output in real time. The available Contabo product specifications do not include a controlled 1080p transcoding benchmark, so there is no established plan-specific answer.
What YouTube requires from the ingest stream
YouTube’s live encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, recommends H.264 at 5 Mbps for 1080p30 or 6 Mbps for 1080p60. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for the connection.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
These are ingest settings, not a measure of how much CPU your VPS needs. YouTube automatically transcodes the incoming live stream into multiple output formats for viewers. Your encoder needs to produce a compatible ingest stream; it does not need to generate every viewer rendition.
What Contabo’s plan specifications do—and do not—tell you
Contabo documents its Core VPS and Performance VPS as KVM virtual servers with shared vCPUs and fixed RAM. In the product documentation accessed in 2026, the Core VPS range is listed as 4–18 vCPUs and 8–96 GB RAM. The Performance VPS family uses shared vCPUs on newer AMD EPYC generations and NVMe storage.

Contabo describes its Max Performance VPS, or VDS, as having dedicated CPU cores and reserved RAM; the plans shown in its documentation list AMD EPYC 7282 CPUs at 2.8 GHz. These specifications can help you identify which resource allocation to test, but they do not establish real-time encoding capacity. Shared vCPUs may be affected by contention, and neither a core count nor a CPU model alone proves that your particular encoder settings will keep pace with the source.
Bandwidth: compare the feed with measured stability
A continuous stream sends one ingest feed to YouTube. Compare its target bitrate with the upload stability you actually measure from the VPS, and leave operating margin rather than sizing exactly to the nominal bitrate. A listed port rate does not guarantee sustained throughput for an individual VPS.

Contabo says there is no default bandwidth cap, subject to its fair-use policy; exceptionally high or disruptive use may be throttled. Consequently, “unlimited” traffic should not be treated as a guarantee of a particular sustained upload rate.
How to test the workload before committing to 24/7
- Decide whether you need full re-encoding. Check the source codec, resolution, frame rate, and audio against the output YouTube needs. If the source already matches, determine whether relay or stream-copy is suitable instead of assuming transcoding is required.
- Freeze the test configuration. Record the source file or live input, output resolution and frame rate, codec, encoder, preset, target bitrate, rate control, and keyframe interval. Use the intended YouTube output settings: for H.264, 5 Mbps at 1080p30 or 6 Mbps at 1080p60, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds).
- Run it on the exact instance you plan to use. Keep the source and settings unchanged and run the workload continuously for a representative sustained interval. Check that encoding remains at or above real time, dropped frames do not accumulate, and CPU contention does not destabilize the process. A short start-up success is not evidence of round-the-clock capacity.
- Send a representative test to YouTube. Use RTMPS and monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages as well as the VPS’s outbound network stability. YouTube advises testing with content similar to the real stream; a local encoder run alone cannot reveal every ingest or network issue.
- Compare CPU allocations fairly. If full re-encoding is CPU-heavy, run the same test on a shared-vCPU VPS and a dedicated-core VDS. Compare sustained real-time performance, stability, port speed and policy, and the current monthly cost for your region. Do not choose by RAM or advertised vCPU count alone.
- Plan for failure, not just steady state. For a business-critical stream, design process supervision, restart recovery, alerts, and a fallback source or stream plan. These operational safeguards are your deployment responsibility, not a performance guarantee from Contabo or YouTube.
Common failure symptoms and what to check
- Encoding falls behind or dropped frames accumulate: verify the measured encoding speed and CPU contention under the full sustained workload. Recheck whether re-encoding is necessary; otherwise test a less demanding configuration or a dedicated-core instance.
- The encoder is stable but YouTube reports poor stream health: check the outbound connection’s stability, target bitrate, CBR configuration, keyframe interval, and RTMPS setup. Compare observed upload behavior with the actual ingest bitrate rather than relying only on the VPS port specification.
- The stream works initially and then becomes unreliable: extend the test and monitor CPU contention and network stability over time. A brief test cannot establish continuous capacity.
- YouTube receives video but viewers see different quality options: that is expected platform behavior. YouTube transcodes the incoming live feed into multiple output formats for viewers; the VPS does not need to encode all of those renditions.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, rather than to transcode a live camera or other input on a VPS, StreamNeo is the first low-maintenance option to consider: it loops uploaded video from the cloud, at any quality up to 4K 60fps as uploaded, for one flat price per slot, and the first day is free.
