You can install OBS on an Ubuntu VPS, but that alone does not make it a working headless streamer. OBS for Linux requires a functioning X window system or Wayland environment and OpenGL 3.3-compatible graphics; a server that meets those minimum requirements may still lack the sustained encoding or network capacity your stream needs. Check the exact Contabo plan and test it before relying on it.
Check whether your Contabo VPS can run OBS first
OBS’s published Linux requirements include an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and an X window system or Wayland. “Headless” means you are administering the machine without a monitor and keyboard attached; it does not remove OBS’s graphics and display requirements. A remote desktop is not automatically proof that the server provides the graphics capability OBS needs.
Contabo’s setup instructions describe provisioning a VPS or VDS from its Customer Control Panel, but the available information does not establish that a particular Contabo plan exposes a compatible GPU, display environment, or enough sustained encoding capacity. Ask Contabo about the exact plan’s graphics/OpenGL support before buying or deploying it. Also confirm the plan’s outbound throughput and test actual encoding; minimum compatibility does not guarantee a stable stream.
- Graphics and display: confirm OpenGL 3.3 compatibility and a working X or Wayland environment.
- Encoding: CPU load varies with codec, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. OBS notes compatible hardware encoders can move encoding work off the CPU, but hardware availability is plan-dependent.
- Network: compare the stream’s bitrate with the VPS’s available outbound throughput, then validate the real stream rather than assuming advertised capacity guarantees performance.
The information available for this setup does not validate a particular Contabo plan, Xvfb, a virtual GPU, a launch command, or systemd automation. Treat those as deployment questions to verify—not as steps known to work on every VPS.

Provision Ubuntu and SSH access in Contabo
Contabo’s documented first-install flow is handled in the Customer Control Panel. The control panel lets you choose a standard operating-system image and establish Linux access with a password or an SSH public key. Cloud-Init templates are optional customization for certain Linux operating systems; they are not required for a basic Ubuntu installation.
- Open Contabo’s Customer Control Panel and select the VPS or VDS instance you want to configure.
- Choose a standard Ubuntu image from the operating-system options available for that instance. Confirm the Ubuntu release you choose is supported by the OBS package instructions you plan to use.
- Set up access: set a Linux password or save an SSH public key using the control-panel installation flow. Keep credentials private and verify that you can connect before proceeding.
- Finish installation and connect to the server. Confirm Ubuntu has booted and that you have administrative access before installing packages.
Contabo published its first-install guidance on June 16, 2025, and updated it on June 26, 2025. Control-panel labels and available operating-system images can change, so follow the options shown for your instance.

Install OBS Studio on Ubuntu
OBS’s Ubuntu installation page documents adding the OBS Studio PPA and installing the package with apt. That page dates to August 26, 2021, and names Ubuntu 18.04 or newer; neither that age nor the minimum version should be treated as confirmation that the same instructions fit every current Ubuntu release. Check OBS’s current Linux installation guidance and your Ubuntu release’s package compatibility before using these commands.
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:obsproject/obs-studio
sudo apt install obs-studioAfter installation, confirm OBS launches inside the display environment you intend to use. On a headless host, do not assume that a successful package installation means OBS can initialize graphics, render scenes, or keep encoding continuously.

Configure the YouTube stream and encoder
In YouTube’s live-stream setup, create or select the broadcast and copy its stream key into OBS’s streaming configuration. Keep the key secret: anyone with it may be able to send video to your channel. Use RTMPS when available. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; keyframes should not be more than four seconds apart.
For H.264, match the bitrate to the resolution and frame rate rather than treating one bitrate as universal. The figures below are YouTube’s published ingestion recommendations, accessed October 3, 2026—not a measurement of what a Contabo plan can encode or transmit.

OBS and YouTube list H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 as supported live codecs, but codec availability depends on your OBS build and compatible encoding hardware. The figures above are specifically for H.264; do not apply them to another codec as if they were its bitrate recommendations. If your server offers a compatible hardware encoder, it may reduce CPU encoding work, but confirm the actual encoder appears in OBS and test it under load.
Set the output resolution and frame rate to match the stream you intend to deliver, then select the matching H.264 row if using H.264. In OBS, use CBR and set the keyframe interval to two seconds. Configure the stream endpoint and key through OBS’s streaming settings, taking care not to expose the key in screenshots, logs, or shared configuration files.

Test before you depend on the stream
- Start a private or otherwise appropriate test broadcast using the same scene, codec, resolution, frame rate, and audio you plan to use.
- Include representative motion and audio. A static test image or silent idle scene will not show how a more demanding broadcast behaves. YouTube recommends testing with movement and audio similar to the planned stream.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators while the test runs. Look for warnings, dropped frames, or ingest problems, and check OBS’s own status and system load.
- Change one variable at a time if the test is unstable: reduce resolution or frame rate, choose the matching bitrate, or use a compatible hardware encoder if available. Run the test again after each change.
- Run the test long enough to expose sustained-load problems before treating the setup as dependable. A brief successful connection does not establish that the VPS can encode and transmit continuously.
Troubleshooting a headless OBS stream

Check content rights and YouTube policies
Being able to send a live signal does not grant permission to broadcast its contents. Use video, music, and other material you own or are licensed to use, and check YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies before repeatedly streaming prerecorded material. Copyright enforcement and monetization eligibility are separate questions; a stream’s technical success does not establish either one.
