To rotate videos without restarting your YouTube broadcast, keep OBS connected to YouTube and let an OBS VLC Video Source play a playlist. Enable Loop Playlist if it should repeat. The encoder connection stays in place as the source moves from one queued video to the next.
How rotation works without a broadcast restart
YouTube receives one continuing feed from your encoder; OBS supplies the video content in that feed. A VLC Video Source can play a playlist, so OBS can advance through queued files while the encoder connection remains active. You do not need to end the YouTube broadcast just to move from one playlist item to the next.
This is different from changing or reconnecting the encoder-to-YouTube stream. The playlist controls which video plays; the YouTube stream URL and key establish where the encoder sends its feed.
Set up an OBS playlist before going live
- Install VLC. OBS requires VLC for the VLC Video Source. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- Add the source. In the OBS scene you intend to stream, use the Sources panel to add a VLC Video Source. Select the video files you want in the playlist. OBS describes this source as supporting a playlist of items, similar to an image slideshow. See the OBS Media Sources documentation and OBS Sources Guide.
- Choose playback behavior. Enable Loop Playlist if the playlist should start over after its last item. Leave it off if the sequence should play once. OBS also documents a shuffle option; the default playlist behavior is ordered playback.
- Preview the scene. Check that the intended video is visible and that its audio is present at a suitable level. Test the actual files and configuration before relying on them live.
Connect OBS to YouTube and keep the encoder running
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or select the live stream.
- In the encoder connection settings, get the server URL and stream key, then enter them in OBS’s stream settings. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains this connection.
- Keep the stream key private: it acts as a credential that allows an encoder to send a feed to your stream. YouTube describes stream-key settings in its live stream settings guide.
- Start streaming from OBS, then check the incoming preview in Live Control Room before making the broadcast public or proceeding with your planned stream. YouTube recommends previewing and monitoring audio and video quality while live; see its computer live-streaming tips.
- Let the VLC playlist advance between files. To end the broadcast, stop the content from the encoder or use End Stream in Live Control Room; do not use either action merely to advance to the next queued video.
Changing a playlist while it is already live
OBS documents playlist playback and looping, but its documentation does not promise that editing a VLC playlist during playback will be seamless or interruption-free. If you need to replace, add, or reorder videos while live, test that exact edit with the same OBS version, VLC installation, and media files in a controlled stream first. When possible, prepare the final playlist before going live.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose the right rotation behavior
- Keep a fixed sequence: use the playlist’s ordered default when videos need to play in a specific order.
- Repeat the sequence: enable Loop Playlist so playback returns to the beginning when the final item finishes.
- Vary the sequence: use the shuffle control if order is not important.
- Play once: leave looping disabled if the playlist should stop after its items finish.
What to check if rotation fails
- VLC Video Source is missing: install VLC, and match its architecture to OBS. OBS specifically requires 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
- A file does not play as expected: confirm that the file is in the source playlist and test the actual media in the scene before streaming. The documentation does not establish that every file format or system setup behaves identically.
- The playlist stops after the last video: turn on Loop Playlist if you want it to repeat.
- The stream is not reaching YouTube: check that OBS is using the server URL and stream key for the intended stream, and confirm the encoder connection in Live Control Room. Keep the key private while checking settings.
- Playback or stream quality is poor: preview and monitor both audio and video. Results can depend on media formats, OBS and VLC versions, system resources, and network conditions; the cited guides do not guarantee uninterrupted playback in every configuration.
- You are considering editing the list live: test the exact playlist edit beforehand. The official documentation does not establish that live editing is risk-free.
