Check two separate YouTube signals: whether YouTube is receiving your incoming video feed, and whether the viewer-facing broadcast is in its expected live state. The YouTube Live Streaming API exposes these as a liveStream resource and a liveBroadcast resource. A stream marked active confirms receipt of data; it does not, by itself, prove that the broadcast viewers should see is live.
What “online” means for a YouTube live stream
YouTube represents the incoming feed and the public-facing event as different resources. Google’s liveStreams reference describes a liveStream as the video feed transmitted to YouTube. The liveBroadcasts reference describes a liveBroadcast as the event streamed to YouTube.
| Signal | What it answers | What to inspect |
|---|---|---|
| Incoming feed | Is YouTube receiving data from the encoder or automated streaming system? | The stream’s status.streamStatus and status.healthStatus. |
| Viewer-facing event | Is the intended broadcast in the lifecycle state your audience expects? | The associated broadcast’s lifecycle status. |
Check both against the expected broadcast and its bound stream ID. Treat them as independent results in your monitor—for example, “input received” and “broadcast live”—rather than collapsing them into a single unqualified “online” indicator. This distinction helps separate a feed or encoder problem from an event that is not in the expected audience-facing state.
How to check both states with the YouTube API
1. Authorize access to the channel’s broadcasts
Use an OAuth-authorized account that owns or can access the channel’s broadcasts. The broadcast-list method documents the https://www.googleapis.com/auth/youtube.readonly scope, as well as YouTube and YouTube force-SSL scopes. Keep OAuth tokens and client credentials private; do not put them in a public page, repository, or client-side script.

To find the relevant broadcast, use the API’s broadcast list method with exactly one of its selectors: broadcastStatus, id, or mine. The documented broadcastStatus filters are active, all, completed, and upcoming; mine=true limits results to broadcasts owned by the authenticated user. For an automated monitor, retaining the expected broadcast ID is usually more reliable than treating any active broadcast on the channel as the intended one.
See the official broadcast list method documentation for its parameters, authorization requirements, and possible errors. A channel that is not enabled for live video may receive liveStreamingNotEnabled.

2. Identify the broadcast’s bound stream
Read the selected liveBroadcast and identify its bound stream ID. Use that ID to inspect the corresponding liveStream. Do not assume a stream status from a different stream on the same channel describes this broadcast.
3. Read the incoming stream status and health
Inspect the stream resource’s status.streamStatus and status.healthStatus. The official liveStreams reference defines the documented stream states as follows:

streamStatus |
Meaning | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
active |
YouTube is receiving data via the stream. | Report that the input is being received, then evaluate health and the broadcast separately. |
created |
The stream has been created but does not have valid CDN settings. | The stream is not confirmed as a working incoming feed. |
ready |
The stream has valid CDN settings. | Readiness is not the same as YouTube currently receiving data. |
inactive |
YouTube is not receiving data from the user. | Check whether the encoder or automated source stopped sending. |
error |
An error condition exists. | Inspect available health details and the source sending the feed. |
The health object reports one of good, ok, bad, or noData, along with the most recent health update timestamp and any configuration issues. good means there are no configuration issues at warning severity or worse; ok means there are no issues at error severity; bad means one or more issues have error severity; and noData means YouTube’s live-streaming backend has no health-status information. Treat noData as unknown health, not as a clean bill of health.
When YouTube supplies configuration issues, inspect their type, severity, reason, and description. Documented examples include low video bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, and missing audio. These details can point toward a delivery or configuration problem even when the stream is active.

4. Check the broadcast lifecycle independently
Read the lifecycle status of the same broadcast identified in step 1. Report whether it is in the live state expected by your workflow; do not infer that from streamStatus=active. The broadcast list can filter for active, upcoming, completed, or all broadcasts, but your monitor should still match the intended broadcast rather than relying on an unrelated event.
5. Present both results in the monitor
A useful status record keeps the signals distinct and includes the IDs and timestamps needed to diagnose a mismatch. For example, report the input state, health state and last health update, plus the broadcast lifecycle state. Alert on the condition that matters to your operation—for instance, an inactive input or an unexpected broadcast state—rather than treating every non-good health result as equivalent.

Polling, alerts, and limits to account for
The API references establish what these fields mean, but they do not establish a universal polling interval, detection latency, or quota budget for your monitor. Choose polling and retry behavior for your own operational needs, then check current API quota documentation and validate the implementation before relying on a particular alerting delay or request rate. Do not present a chosen polling interval as a YouTube guarantee.
Also monitor the monitor itself: an API check that has stopped running cannot tell you that the stream has failed. Keep credentials private, handle authorization failures as monitoring failures rather than as proof that the stream is offline, and retain enough error detail to distinguish API access problems from stream or broadcast states.
Common status mismatches and what to check
| Observed result | What it establishes | Next check |
|---|---|---|
Input is active, broadcast is not in the expected live state |
YouTube is receiving stream data, but the broadcast state does not confirm the expected viewer-facing event. | Verify that you checked the broadcast bound to this stream and inspect that broadcast’s lifecycle status. |
Input is inactive |
YouTube is not receiving data from the user via that stream. | Check that the automated source is running and sending to the expected stream. |
Input is ready or created |
The stream is not confirmed as actively sending data; created also lacks valid CDN settings. |
Check stream configuration and whether the source has begun sending. |
Health is bad |
YouTube reports at least one configuration issue with error severity. | Read the issue type, severity, reason, and description; investigate the reported delivery or configuration issue. |
Health is noData |
YouTube’s backend has no health-status information. | Keep health marked unknown and rely on the separate stream and broadcast states until health data is available. |
Broadcast list returns liveStreamingNotEnabled |
The authenticated account is not enabled for live video. | Confirm the account and its live-streaming eligibility; do not interpret this authorization/API error as a stream state. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel looping uploaded videos without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo runs that playback in the cloud. It is not a replacement for checking YouTube’s API states described above: use the API when you need to verify whether YouTube is receiving the feed and whether the broadcast is live.
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.
- Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream does not depend on your computer or home connection staying on.
- Uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot rather than quality tiers.
- StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required; it is one free day per account.
Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start with the StreamNeo free day.
