YouTube does not provide a native setting to schedule a playlist to rotate or switch to a fallback playlist when a video is unavailable. You can schedule an individual video to publish, and you can manage playlist contents, but unattended playback rotation and fallback require a separate playback or playout system. First identify whether you mean YouTube videos, an embedded player, or local files on a device.
What YouTube can—and cannot—schedule
YouTube Studio’s scheduling feature controls when an uploaded private video becomes public. It does not schedule a playlist to begin playing, rotate on a recurring timetable, or switch to another playlist when an item fails. Google’s instructions cover scheduling an individual upload: Schedule video publishing.
The YouTube Data API can list, insert, update, and delete playlist items, including their order. Its playlist-item tools manage playlist contents; the API reference does not describe timed playback or automatic fallback: PlaylistItems resource.
A YouTube queue is for ordering videos in the current viewing session, not for recurring playback. YouTube says, “Your queue won’t save after you’ve closed your browser.” Saving videos to Watch Later or another playlist preserves a collection, but does not schedule it to play: Queue videos on YouTube – Computer.

Choose the setup that matches your goal
Publishing your own videos at set times
Use YouTube Studio’s Schedule card for individual uploads. This publishes the video at a chosen date and time; it does not play or rotate a playlist. The displayed “Published on” date on the watch page is based on Pacific Standard Time, so viewers in time zones ahead of PST may see a different calendar date from the one shown in Studio: YouTube’s scheduling instructions and published date information.
- In YouTube Studio, create or upload the video and fill in its details.
- On the Visibility page, open the Schedule card.
- Choose the publication date, time, and time zone, then select Schedule.
- To change the plan later, edit the scheduled time in Studio or publish the video immediately.
Maintaining playlist contents or order
You can edit a playlist manually in YouTube or manage its items through the YouTube Data API, subject to the required account authorization and playlist ordering settings. These operations change what is in the playlist or its order; they do not create a playback timetable or fallback rule.

Watching videos in a chosen order
Use the queue to choose what plays next during an open YouTube viewing session. For a collection you want to return to, save the videos in a playlist or Watch Later. Neither option makes playback recurring or unattended.
Diagnose a video that is missing or will not play
If you mean a YouTube video in an embedded playlist, YouTube identifies several reasons it might not appear or play. Check the video itself and the viewer’s access before deciding how a fallback should work:

- Embedding is disabled: the uploader may have disallowed playback on other websites. For an embedded playlist, use videos whose owners permit embedding.
- The video is age-restricted: an embedded player may not show it in the intended viewing context.
- The video is private: private videos are limited to the owner and selected viewers. Confirm that the account or viewer has been granted access.
- The video is unlisted: anyone with its link can view and share it, but an unlisted video is not the same as a public one. Check that the playlist or player has the correct URL and intended access.
YouTube’s embedded-playback guidance lists disabled embedding, age restrictions, and private-video access as possible causes: Play videos in an embedded player. Its privacy guidance explains the difference between private and unlisted videos: Change video privacy settings. A fallback playlist does not change the access permissions on the primary playlist or on its videos.
What a real scheduled fallback system needs
For unattended rotation, a separate scheduler or playout layer would need to handle the work YouTube’s playlist and publishing features do not document: start and stop times, time zones, checking whether an item is available to the intended player, choosing a fallback, and recovering when playback fails. Treat those as requirements to verify with the system you choose, not as built-in YouTube behavior.

- Define whether entries are YouTube URLs, local media files, or a mix. A “missing file” on a signage device is a different problem from an inaccessible YouTube video.
- Set the schedule and time zone, and decide what should happen at the end of each rotation.
- Specify what counts as unavailable: removed or private content, regional restrictions, disabled embedding, a missing local file, or a network/player error.
- Choose the fallback behavior: skip to the next item, play a designated backup playlist, or show a holding item. Confirm whether this is automatic and configurable.
- Check how the system detects failure, reports it, and resumes the normal rotation after a recovery.
- Confirm how playlists are edited and monitored remotely, and what happens if the display device or network goes offline.
There is no single fallback procedure for local files without knowing the playout software and device. Likewise, compatibility with YouTube URLs and automatic recovery must be confirmed for the particular scheduler or player; the YouTube features described above do not establish those capabilities.
