Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →You can keep an FFmpeg stream running by hosting it on an Ubuntu computer or VPS that stays powered on, sending it to YouTube over the RTMPS address shown in Live Control Room, and supervising the process so it can restart after a failure. A running FFmpeg process alone does not guarantee that YouTube is receiving healthy video and audio: the input, host, and internet connection must all keep working.
Before you begin: confirm YouTube Live access
Check the channel in YouTube Live Control Room before configuring a server. YouTube says a channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and meet its minimum age requirement of 16. Initial access can take time, but there is no universal activation delay established for every channel. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
Decide what FFmpeg will send: a prerecorded file or playlist, a camera, or another input it can read. A local Ubuntu machine must remain on and have a stable upload connection. A rented VPS can provide remote, always-on compute, but choose it based on the source, required encoding workload, storage, and sustained network capacity—not simply because a provider has an India region. There is no provider or Indian network performance verified here.
Choose an encoder target that your connection can sustain
Use YouTube’s published settings for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually plan to stream. Its current H.264 guidance includes these examples:

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Video format | YouTube recommended bitrate | YouTube minimum bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular VPS, home connection, source, or encode will work. Treat the minimum as a floor, not a dependable target. Leave upload headroom, run a speed test, and test the actual picture and motion before making the broadcast public. YouTube lists separate recommendations for H.265 and AV1; consult its live encoder settings and bitrate table if you choose either codec.
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. It supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video with AAC or MP3 audio. For an H.264 encode, set the keyframe interval in frames to approximately twice the frame rate: for example, 60 frames at 30 fps or 120 frames at 60 fps. Encoder options vary by FFmpeg build, so validate the resulting output and YouTube’s stream-health status rather than assuming a command flag guarantees the intended behavior.
Install and check FFmpeg on Ubuntu

Install FFmpeg from a trusted package source appropriate to your Ubuntu release. Package versions and enabled encoders vary, so do not assume every build includes the same codecs or protocol support.

In the stream settings, copy the RTMPS stream URL and stream key displayed for that stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP; use the URL provided in Live Control Room instead of relying on a remembered server address. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance and stream settings and key guidance.

Treat the key like a password. Keep it out of public scripts, repositories, screenshots, and world-readable service files. Store it in a restricted configuration or environment file, and ensure logs do not reveal it. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the configuration that uses it.

Build and test the FFmpeg output
There is no single safe command for every input or FFmpeg installation. Source duration, frame rate, timestamps, audio presence, installed encoders, and the selected YouTube settings all affect the command. For a typical H.264 encode, the options to configure include:

Choose an audio bitrate and output format compatible with the service and your build.- The RTMPS URL and stream key copied from Live Control Room as the destination, with an output format compatible with the chosen ingest workflow.
For the destination and final options, consult the YouTube encoder settings and the FFmpeg protocol documentation, then test with the exact source. A process can start successfully while producing black video, silent audio, incorrect timestamps, or an ingest YouTube flags as unhealthy. Watch the stream preview and health indicators in Live Control Room during a private or otherwise controlled test.
Looping a prerecorded video
A finite file will end unless you deliberately arrange a repeat or playlist strategy. Confirm the looping option’s behavior against your installed FFmpeg build and test the transition across a file boundary; timestamps and duration handling can affect continuous output. A loop flag is not a substitute for testing the complete stream. For a playlist, verify that each item is readable and that transitions behave as intended.
Streaming a camera or another live input
Confirm that FFmpeg can read the input continuously and that the host can sustain the encode workload. Re-encoding can consume significant CPU; stream-copying may reduce that work but only suits a compatible feed and does not eliminate the need to validate timestamps, codec, bitrate, and YouTube stream health. Test the actual camera or feed rather than extrapolating from a file test.

Run FFmpeg under supervision
For an always-on setup, configure a process supervisor such as systemd to start FFmpeg at boot and restart it after an unexpected exit. A restart policy can recover from a terminated process; it cannot repair a missing input, a full disk, an expired or incorrect key, a host failure, or an internet outage. A unit file is an Ubuntu operations example to adapt to your service account, restricted credential file, command, and logging setup—not a universal validated recipe.
Test the operations that matter before relying on it:
- Reboot the host and verify the service starts as intended.
- Stop or terminate FFmpeg deliberately and confirm the supervisor restarts it.
- Inspect service logs and confirm the stream key is not exposed.
- Check Live Control Room after both a normal start and a recovery; verify that YouTube receives usable video and audio and reports a healthy stream.
- Simulate or review recovery from input loss, storage issues, and network interruption. A process restart alone does not prove the broadcast recovered.
YouTube advises testing and monitoring stream health during the broadcast in its encoder settings guidance.
Plan the YouTube session and content rights
A machine can send data continuously, but that does not mean one YouTube live event, its archive, or DVR behavior will continue indefinitely. YouTube says DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for live streams longer than 12 hours. Decide whether your channel’s workflow uses a single scheduled event or repeated sessions, and verify how the selected setup handles session endings, archives, and viewer playback in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a stream | Incorrect endpoint or key, unsupported RTMPS workflow, or network failure. | Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, check the installed FFmpeg protocol support, and inspect network and service logs without exposing the key. |
| FFmpeg is active but the preview is black or silent | Input selection, mapping, timestamps, or missing/unusable audio or video. | Test the source locally, inspect FFmpeg output and mappings, and confirm the YouTube preview shows the expected picture and sound. |
| Stream health is poor or the broadcast is unstable | Insufficient sustained upload capacity, bitrate too close to connection limits, or unstable host/network. | Use the bitrate guidance for the selected format, leave upload headroom, speed-test the connection, and test the real source. Do not use a brief speed-test peak as proof of sustained capacity. |
| FFmpeg stops when a file ends | The input is finite and no repeat or playlist behavior is configured. | Configure and test a deliberate looping or playlist strategy, including the file boundary and timestamps. |
| The service restarts but the stream remains down | The supervisor restarted the process, but the input, key, host, or internet connection remains unavailable. | Check service logs, input availability, credentials, disk space, host status, and Live Control Room health; fix the underlying cause rather than relying on repeated restarts. |
| The stream ends or DVR/archives behave differently than expected | Long-session behavior and DVR availability are not unlimited. | Check YouTube’s long-stream DVR guidance and verify the channel’s actual session and archive workflow. |
