To run prerecorded videos in sequence as a continuous YouTube Live stream, schedule playback in a tool that supports continuous or scheduled playout—creating a YouTube playlist alone will not put it on air.
Choose the kind of schedule you need
There are three different jobs that are easy to confuse: scheduling a live event, scheduling a regular video to publish, and scheduling the order in which media plays during a live feed. YouTube handles the first two; an encoder or playout service handles the third.
| What you want | Use | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Several live shows at set times | YouTube Studio plus a software or hardware encoder | Studio creates the upcoming event; the encoder sends the program when it is time to broadcast. |
| A continuous live channel playing prerecorded items in sequence | An encoder or cloud playout service with scheduled or continuous prerecorded-media support | The service plays the programming and sends it to YouTube as a live feed. |
| A regular video that becomes public later | YouTube scheduled publishing | The uploaded video is private until its selected publication time, then becomes public. It is not a live broadcast. |
YouTube models a broadcast event and its incoming feed as separate resources: a liveBroadcast and a liveStream. A broadcast must be bound to a stream before the encoder feed can serve that event. Google explains that “A broadcast represents an event that can be watched on YouTube as it happens. Each broadcast is a distinct YouTube video.” YouTube Live Streaming API
Can YouTube schedule a playlist as a live stream?
No—not by itself. A YouTube playlist is a collection of videos, and a scheduled video upload controls when one video becomes public. Neither one instructs a live encoder to play files in sequence or send a continuous stream. For that, choose a playout tool that specifically supports prerecorded live programming, then schedule the YouTube event separately.

Schedule a live event in YouTube Studio
- Check live access first. YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours. Confirm the channel can go live and resolve any account restrictions before the planned event. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming
- Create or schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live, then open Manage in Live Control Room and choose Schedule stream. Create a broadcast or reuse settings from a previous one. Set the title, start time, privacy, and other event details. A scheduled event can appear as upcoming, be shared, and let viewers request reminders. YouTube Help: Schedule a live stream
- Copy the stream connection details to your encoder. If the encoder offers YouTube as a destination, select it and follow its connection flow. Otherwise, copy YouTube’s stream URL into the encoder’s server or RTMP field and the stream key into its key field. Treat the key like a password; if it may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room. YouTube Help: Choose a live encoder
- Prepare the program in the encoder. For a creator-led show, set up the live sources and start the encoder at the event time. For prerecorded playlist-like output, create the playout schedule in a product that explicitly supports it. YouTube’s event time does not determine which prerecorded item plays next.
- Start the feed and confirm the event. Start sending video from the encoder and wait for the preview in Live Control Room. Select Go live unless auto-start is enabled for the broadcast. When finished, end the event and stop sending the feed as appropriate.
- Check the viewer page and archive. Confirm the event’s visibility and playback on its watch page. YouTube says encoder streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; check the channel’s Live tab for current, upcoming, and previous broadcasts. YouTube Help: Choose a live encoder
Understand auto-start and auto-stop
Auto-start and auto-stop control the broadcast’s lifecycle; they do not create a playlist or playout schedule. Auto-start can start the broadcast when video arrives on its bound stream. Auto-stop ends the broadcast around one minute after the channel owner stops sending video. Your encoder or service still has to produce the intended sequence of media. Reuse a stream, or create a separate one?
For recurring events using the same encoder setup and transmission settings, YouTube allows a stream to be reused across broadcasts scheduled at different times. Each scheduled broadcast remains its own event. If two shows must run concurrently with unrelated feeds or different transmission settings, use separate stream resources where needed rather than treating one reused stream as two simultaneous inputs. Google’s Live Streaming API guide describes creating and binding broadcasts and streams.
Automate event creation with the YouTube API
The YouTube Live Streaming API is for developers building a schedule manager or automating many broadcasts. It requires application registration and authorization for the channel; it is not a playlist player on its own.

Recurring broadcasts at different times can share a stream when their setup is compatible; different channels need different streams. The API automates event and stream management, while the encoder or playout system remains responsible for sending the actual video. See the YouTube Live Streaming API documentation.

Rights, monetization, and other checks
- Use media you have the rights to stream. This matters especially for continuous music and prerecorded programming. Scheduling a stream does not grant permission to use its content. YouTube’s playlist guidance and live-stream documentation cover content and rights restrictions.
- Do not assume scheduling enables ad revenue. YouTube says a channel must be eligible to monetize videos to enable automated ads on a broadcast. Scheduling alone does not establish monetization eligibility or promise revenue. YouTube Help: Schedule a live stream
- Keep the three schedules distinct. Event start time belongs to the YouTube broadcast, a video’s public release time belongs to scheduled publishing, and media order and timing belong to the encoder or playout service.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Live streaming is unavailable when you need it | Live access has not been enabled or the channel has an account restriction. | Enable live streaming and verify access in advance; YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours. |
| The scheduled watch page is waiting for a feed | The encoder has not started, or its destination, stream URL, or key is incorrect. | Confirm the encoder is sending to the scheduled stream, recheck the URL and key, and wait for the Live Control Room preview. |
| The broadcast starts but no playlist item plays next | YouTube auto-start only reacts to incoming video; it does not manage prerecorded playout. | Configure the sequence and schedule inside an encoder or service with continuous prerecorded-media support. |
| A scheduled event ends after the feed stops | Auto-stop is enabled and the encoder stopped sending video. | Check the event’s lifecycle settings and the encoder’s playlist/recovery behavior; auto-stop does not select or launch the next item. |
| The stream key might be compromised | The key was shared, logged, or exposed outside the encoder setup. | Reset the key in Live Control Room and update the authorized encoder or service. |
| A replay is missing from the channel | The stream may have exceeded YouTube’s stated automatic archive duration or visibility may be wrong. | For encoder streams shorter than 12 hours, YouTube says archiving is automatic. Check visibility and the Live tab; do not assume a longer stream will be archived automatically. |
