Use a systemd timer to decide when a job runs and a script or API client to decide what “rotation” does. On Debian, the reliable pattern is a timer that activates a oneshot service; the service runs your script and exits. For changes to a playlist hosted on YouTube, use the YouTube Data API with the required authorization. yt-dlp can inspect or select playlist entries for supported workflows, but its documented features do not establish that it can reorder items in a remote playlist.
What “playlist rotation” means
Before scheduling anything, define the change you want. “Rotate” is not one specific YouTube operation: it could mean moving an item, cycling a subset, adding or removing items, or changing playlist metadata. Those actions can require different API operations. A timer only triggers the task; it does not define or perform the playlist change.
- Remote playlist editing: The job changes playlist contents or properties on YouTube. Use the appropriate YouTube Data API operation.
- Reading or downloading entries: The job extracts playlist information or selects entries for a supported workflow. yt-dlp documents playlist metadata and selection features, but that is distinct from editing the remote playlist order.
Debian identifies systemd as its default init system and service manager (Debian Policy Manual). Its Reference demonstrates a user timer activating a oneshot service.
Choose the mechanism that matches the task

Google’s playlist update reference specifies OAuth scopes and the 50-unit quota cost for that method. The broader YouTube Data API reference describes playlists as API resources. YouTube API use is subject to the YouTube API Services Terms; follow the terms applicable to your use rather than assuming all automation is permitted.

For yt-dlp’s package-specific context, consult Debian’s Bookworm manpage and the Trixie package documentation. Do not treat a download or extraction command as a playlist-edit command.
Create a user service and timer
A user unit is suitable when the task belongs to your user account and can run under that account’s service manager. Use a system service only when system-wide management or execution requirements call for it. The following files are an illustrative starting point, not a tested configuration. Replace the script path and schedule with values appropriate for your setup.

1. Write the task script
Place your script at ~/bin/rotate-youtube-playlist and make it executable. It should implement one clearly defined operation, report errors with a nonzero exit status, and avoid relying on interactive shell setup. If it edits YouTube, implement the required authorized API calls; if it only reads or downloads entries, use a tool and options supported by your Debian package version.
2. Define the oneshot service

3. Define the timer

WantedBy=timers.targetOnCalendar=daily is an example schedule, not a requirement. Select an interval that fits your rotation policy and the API operations it needs. Consider whether missed runs should be caught up, whether retries are safe, and what should happen if a prior run is still active. Configure those behaviors for the Debian/systemd release you are running.
4. Reload units, enable the timer, and inspect it
For a user timer, run these commands as the user who owns the units:

systemctl --user list-timersUse systemctl --user status youtube-playlist-rotate.timer to inspect the timer and systemctl --user status youtube-playlist-rotate.service to inspect the most recent service state. To view that service’s journal output, run journalctl --user -u youtube-playlist-rotate.service. These are user-manager commands; system units use the system manager instead. Check the exact unit behavior and command details for your installed systemd release.
Make the scheduled environment dependable
A service does not necessarily inherit the environment from an interactive terminal. A script that works when run manually can fail on a timer if it assumes a particular working directory, shell profile, executable search path, credential file, or exported variable.

- Use explicit paths: Reference the intended script and any required executables directly. Set a working directory or environment in the unit only if the task needs it.
- Protect credentials: Store OAuth credentials with restrictive permissions and avoid printing tokens or secrets to standard output or logs. Decide how the job obtains credentials without prompting for interactive login.
- Check network and API failures: The job needs network access when it runs. Handle transient failures deliberately, and avoid retries that can apply a mutation twice unless the operation is safe to repeat.
- Make runs observable: Send useful status and error messages to the journal without exposing secrets. Use the service journal when diagnosing a failed scheduled run.
- Review API use per run: Quota depends on the API operations the script actually calls and how often the timer activates it. The 50-unit figure applies to the documented
playlists.updatecall, not automatically to every playlist workflow.
Troubleshoot common failures
- The timer is absent from the list: Check that both files are in
~/.config/systemd/user/, reload the user manager withsystemctl --user daemon-reload, and inspect the timer’s status. - The timer fires but the service fails: Inspect
systemctl --user status youtube-playlist-rotate.serviceandjournalctl --user -u youtube-playlist-rotate.service. Check the script’s executable permission, path, exit status, and assumptions about its working directory or environment. - API authorization is rejected: Verify that the OAuth flow and granted scope match the specific API operation. Do not assume playlist read access authorizes a mutation.
- The job runs but the playlist does not change: Confirm that the script calls the correct API operation for the intended rotation rule. Extraction or download success does not prove that a remote playlist was edited.
- Quota or site compatibility changes: Check the current endpoint documentation and quota for the API operations used. For yt-dlp, verify the installed Debian package version and its current supported-site information; website changes can break support.
