To make a livestream overlay in Canva, choose a Twitch Overlay template or start with a blank design, arrange your frames and text around the areas that must stay visible, then export a transparent PNG for a static overlay or an MP4 for an animated one. Add the exported file as a source in your streaming software, position it above your gameplay or camera, and preview the scene before going live.
Plan the overlay before opening Canva
Decide what the overlay needs to show and what it must leave unobstructed. The main game or camera should remain the visual focus; frames, labels, and decorative elements should sit around it rather than compete with it.
- Choose the target canvas and identify the safe areas for gameplay or the main camera.
- Decide whether you need a webcam frame, chat panel, social handles, subscriber goal, donor information, or a separate starting or intermission screen.
- Keep important text clear of areas that changing stream content may cover. A designed label or panel is static artwork; it does not automatically update subscriber or donation totals or create live alerts.

Create the design in Canva
- Choose a starting point. In Canva, search for “Twitch Overlay.” Select a template that suits your channel’s style, or start with a blank overlay design. Canva offers both free and premium templates, so check the template and any included elements before relying on them.
- Set the layout. Canva recommends 1920 × 1080 px for Twitch overlays. Treat this as Canva’s suggested starting size, not a universal Twitch requirement; use the canvas dimensions that match your intended scene.
- Customize the elements. Adapt frames, shapes, icons, patterns, illustrations, images, and text to your channel’s colors and typography. Keep the visual hierarchy restrained so the live content remains easy to see.
- Adjust transparency where needed. To make an individual panel or graphic partly see-through, select it and use the toolbar’s Transparency control; Canva Help says you can drag the slider or enter a value. Canva Help: Adjust element transparency
- Add motion only if it serves the scene. Canva’s overlay guide describes text animations, transitions, video, and effects. Use movement selectively, since animated elements can draw attention away from gameplay.
Export the overlay in a suitable format
Choose the export based on whether the artwork is static or animated and whether the empty parts of the design must remain transparent.

Canva’s overlay guide recommends saving static overlays as transparent PNGs and animated overlays as MP4 files. Its general download guide also lists GIF for animated designs or elements, and MP4 for designs with video and music. Those are documented choices, not a guarantee that every format will look or play identically in every streaming tool. Canva Help: Choose the right download file type
For a transparent static overlay, select PNG and enable the transparent-background option if it appears in your download settings. This is different from making one element partly transparent: the toolbar Transparency control changes an element, while the transparent-background export preserves empty areas around the artwork.

Add the overlay to your livestream scene
- Export and locate the file. Save the PNG or animated file to a location you can find from your streaming software.
- Open the scene you intend to use. In OBS, Streamlabs, or another broadcast tool, choose the scene containing your game or camera. Canva names OBS and Streamlabs among the tools where overlays can be imported; exact controls can differ by software version.
- Add the exported file as a source. Use the software’s source controls to add the image or media file, then place it above the gameplay or camera source in the scene’s layer order.
- Resize and position it. Align the artwork with the scene canvas. Avoid covering gameplay details, faces, or other information viewers need to see.
- Preview before going live. Check the full scene for unwanted solid backgrounds, cropped edges, unreadable text, misplaced frames, and animated elements that do not play as expected. If the result is wrong, revisit the Canva export settings or adjust the source in the streaming software.
Canva says overlays can be imported into streaming software and names OBS and Streamlabs; its overlay page also mentions Facebook, YouTube, Twitch Studio, and StreamElements. The scene setup and source controls belong to those tools, so verify the result in the software and version you actually use. Canva’s overlay guide
Fix common overlay problems
- The overlay has a solid rectangle behind it. The background may not have been exported as transparent. Re-export as PNG and enable the transparent-background option if your Canva account offers it.
- You cannot find transparent-background export. Canva lists this download option for Pro, Teams, Education, and Nonprofits accounts. Check the options shown for your account; do not assume a free account includes it.
- The overlay covers too much of the game or camera. Move or resize the source in your streaming scene, or return to Canva and simplify the layout or reduce the size of its panels.
- Animation is missing or looks wrong. Preview the exported file in the target software. Canva recommends MP4 for animated overlays and also documents GIF for animated designs or elements; if a motion asset is unsuitable, use a static PNG version.
- Subscriber or donation information does not update. A Canva text label or panel is artwork, not a live data widget. Configure any changing information or alerts separately in the streaming software or relevant service.
