1080p streaming

How to Stream 1080p on YouTube Live with Slow Indian Broadband

YouTube's 1080p live bitrate depends on codec and frame rate. Measure upload speed, configure the encoder for a tested target, and rehearse before streaming.

For YouTube Live, “compressing” a 1080p feed means encoding it at a bitrate your internet connection can reliably upload—not shrinking a prerecorded video file. Measure your upload speed first. YouTube lists H.264 1080p at 30 fps at 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended; at 60 fps, it lists 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended. If your connection cannot sustain the applicable minimum, an encoder setting cannot make 1080p reliable: test a lower bitrate or frame rate, or use a lower resolution.

What “compressing” means for a live stream

A live encoder compresses video and audio as they are captured, then sends that stream to YouTube. The bitrate controls how much data the encoded feed needs to upload each second. Lowering it can reduce the upload demand, but also gives the encoder less data with which to represent the picture. It does not increase the capacity or stability of your broadband connection.

This is different from compressing a finished recording before uploading it to YouTube. YouTube’s separate prerecorded-video upload recommendations are not the bitrate settings for a live encoder.

What upload speed do you need for 1080p YouTube Live?

YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists these H.264 figures for 1080p, on a platform-wide basis. Its page was accessed on 2026-10-03; no publication date is shown. They are encoder bitrate figures, not a guarantee that a particular connection will sustain a broadcast.

Live format H.264 minimum bitrate H.264 recommended bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

The bitrate is what the encoder sends; an internet speed test measures the connection’s upload capacity. YouTube advises running a speed test to check upload bitrate. A result at or near the stream bitrate is not proof of stable headroom: available upload capacity can vary, and YouTube does not specify a universal safety margin. Measure under conditions resembling the planned stream and rehearse before relying on it.

YouTube also lists lower 1080p minimum and recommended figures for H.265/AV1: 4/10 Mbps at 30 fps and 4/12 Mbps at 60 fps. Use those figures only if your encoder and setup support the relevant codec. The guidance does not establish the performance or quality gain for a particular computer, encoder, or scene. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

Choose settings your connection and encoder can sustain

Start with the frame rate

Use 30 fps as the first format to test if the gameplay or other content does not need 60 fps and upload capacity is limited. YouTube’s H.264 1080p30 minimum is lower than its 1080p60 minimum. This is a bandwidth trade-off, not a promise about how a particular game will look; test representative motion before choosing.

Set a constant bitrate

YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) for live encoding. Select CBR in your encoder and choose a bitrate supported by the applicable YouTube guidance and your tested connection. If the connection cannot sustain the applicable minimum, do not treat a lower encoder value as a reliable 1080p solution; test a lower resolution or frame rate instead.

Set keyframes and transport

  • Keyframe interval: set two seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
  • Protocol: use RTMPS when available. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS for encoder streaming and recommends encrypted RTMPS.

These are YouTube’s general live encoder recommendations; exact control names and locations vary by encoder. Follow your encoder’s documentation if its interface labels the settings differently. YouTube’s guidance is at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Measure, configure, and rehearse before going live

  1. Check upload capacity. Run a speed test and note the upload result, not just the download result. If possible, test at a time and on the connection you expect to use for the broadcast.
  2. Choose the target format. Pick 1080p30 or 1080p60 based on the content and compare the upload result with YouTube’s corresponding bitrate guidance. If the applicable minimum is not sustainable in your test conditions, step down the frame rate or resolution and test again.
  3. Configure the encoder. Set the video codec your encoder supports, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS where available. Set the stream resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to the tested target.
  4. Run a representative rehearsal. Include motion and audio similar to what you will broadcast. A static menu or silent desktop may not reflect the upload demand of fast gameplay, camera movement, or a full audio mix.
  5. Watch stream health and messages. Check YouTube’s stream health and encoder messages during the rehearsal and while live. If YouTube reports instability, lower the demand by testing a lower bitrate, frame rate, or resolution before the consequential stream.

Why Indian broadband needs a connection-specific test

YouTube’s recommendations are platform-wide; they do not establish typical upload speeds for India or for any Indian internet provider. “Low-speed broadband” therefore has no single bitrate setting. Measure the connection you will actually stream over, and treat a speed-test result as a planning input rather than proof that the upload will remain stable throughout a broadcast.

Do not use prerecorded upload settings for a live encoder

YouTube’s separate recommended upload encoding settings list 8 Mbps for standard-frame-rate 1080p prerecorded uploads and 12 Mbps for high-frame-rate 1080p prerecorded uploads. Those values apply to finished videos uploaded as files, not to live ingestion. For a live stream, use the live encoder guidance above. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.

Troubleshooting an unstable 1080p stream

YouTube reports poor stream health or dropped frames

Check the measured upload capacity against the chosen encoder bitrate and rerun a representative test. If the connection cannot reliably carry the selected format, lower the bitrate only as part of a new test; if that leaves it below YouTube’s applicable minimum, try 30 fps or a lower resolution rather than assuming 1080p will be reliable.

The speed test looks fast, but the stream still struggles

A single speed test does not demonstrate that upload capacity will stay constant during a live broadcast. Repeat the test under realistic conditions, rehearse with similar gameplay motion and audio, and monitor YouTube’s health messages. The available guidance does not specify a universal buffer to apply to every connection.

The encoder does not offer AV1 or H.265

Use a codec the encoder actually supports, such as H.264, and follow the matching bitrate figures. YouTube’s lower listed figures for AV1/H.265 do not establish that a given device can encode them or that switching codecs will improve a specific setup.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running rather than broadcast live gameplay from a camera or game capture, StreamNeo takes the encoding computer and home connection out of the ongoing stream: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded-video looping, not live camera or gameplay capture. Start a StreamNeo free day.
