If only some videos in an OBS playlist show a black picture, check the playlist entries and source visibility first, then test each failing file on its own. OBS’s built-in Media Source and VLC Video source work differently: VLC Video is the documented playlist source and uses VLC libraries for extended media support. The available documentation and user reports do not establish one universal cause or fix.
Start with the source type and playlist entries
OBS’s Media Source adds media files to a scene and is suitable for testing a single file. OBS’s VLC Video source supports playlists and uses VLC libraries for extended media support. OBS says VLC must be installed for VLC Video to appear; if OBS is 64-bit, VLC must also be 64-bit. OBS’s media-source documentation describes these source types and their settings.
- For one file: add it as a Media Source and see whether it plays by itself.
- For a playlist: add a VLC Video source, then add the media files using the source’s playlist control. Check that each expected file appears in the playlist.
- Check the source name versus its contents: naming a source does not add a media item to its playlist. In one OBS forum case, a user had entered a stream link as the source name rather than adding it to the playlist; correcting that resolved that particular setup. It is a useful check, not a general explanation for local-file failures. OBS forum discussion.
Make sure the picture is not hidden
OBS displays sources in layers: sources higher in the Sources list can cover sources beneath them. Check that the source’s eye icon is on, then move it temporarily above other sources. If the video becomes visible, an overlay or another source was obscuring it. OBS’s sources guide explains source order and visibility.
Check the file, not just its extension
OBS lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM as video extensions supported by Media Source. That list identifies extensions, not every codec or encoding combination that will work. A familiar extension therefore does not prove that a particular file’s contents are compatible.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Test one failing file by itself, outside the playlist, using Media Source.
- Compare it with a file that works, including both the extension and the encoding if you can identify it.
- If the file fails alone as well as in the playlist, the problem is less likely to be only the playlist transition. If it works alone but not in the playlist, recheck the playlist entry and observe what happens when OBS moves to it.
OBS’s VLC Video source also documents options for looping, shuffling, visibility behavior, network caching, audio tracks, and subtitles. Its documented defaults include looping on, shuffling off, and network caching set to 400 ms. The caching value is a setting, not a measured cure for black screens. OBS’s media-source documentation.
Check VLC installation and architecture
If VLC Video is missing from the source options, install VLC. Match its architecture to OBS: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC for this source type. If VLC Video is available but a file still fails, confirm the dependency before spending time changing unrelated settings. OBS’s media-source documentation.

Use the failure pattern to narrow the cause
- Black from the start: verify the correct file is in the playlist, test it alone, and check source visibility.
- Black only when the playlist advances: test the next file by itself and confirm it was added as a playlist item. Users have reported black video with audio during playlist shuffling, but those reports do not identify a reliable fix.
- Black after hours of playback: note how long playback runs before the problem and whether audio continues. A forum user reported failures after hours with a very long playlist; that account does not establish a common cause or remedy. OBS forum reports.
- Black video in other players or capture contexts too: broader graphics troubleshooting may be reasonable. One user reported that updating onboard graphics drivers appeared to resolve black video across several playback contexts. Treat that as an anecdote, not a confirmed general playlist fix. OBS forum discussion.
When documenting the issue, record whether the picture is black immediately, only at transitions, or after extended playback, and whether audio continues. These details help distinguish a visibility mistake from a file-specific or playback problem, but do not by themselves identify the cause.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The official documentation establishes the different workflows, the VLC dependency and architecture requirement, the listed Media Source extensions, and the relevant VLC Video settings. Forum posts document user-reported symptoms and individual experiences; they are not controlled tests. Without the affected files’ encoding, OBS and VLC versions, operating system, graphics hardware, and source settings, it is not possible to determine whether a particular black screen comes from file compatibility, playlist handling, source layering, or a wider graphics issue.
