Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf an MP4 stutters in an OBS Media Source, first check whether the problem follows that file, then test hardware decoding and reduce the work OBS has to do. A large file is not, by itself, a diagnosis: resolution, frame rate, bitrate, codec complexity, and storage behavior describe different demands. No single setting is guaranteed to fix every file or system.
First, find out where the stutter comes from
OBS supports MP4 in Media Sources, but stuttering can have different causes. A controlled comparison helps separate a file-specific issue from scene or system workload.
- Try another MP4 in the same scene. If it plays smoothly while the suspect file stutters, compare the files’ codec, resolution, and frame rate. That comparison narrows the investigation; it does not prove which file property is responsible.
- Try the suspect MP4 in a simple OBS scene. If it is smoother there, scene complexity or other workload may be contributing.
- Check where the stutter is visible. Note whether it appears only in the OBS preview, in an OBS recording or stream, or in another player. These are distinct symptoms and need not have the same cause.
OBS lists GPU overload and system bottlenecks among possible performance problems. Other GPU-heavy applications and complex scenes can use resources OBS needs. OBS encoding performance troubleshooting
Test Media Source hardware decoding
In the scene, open the MP4’s Media Source properties and look for Use hardware decoding when available. OBS documents this option as off by default. When enabled, it asks the GPU to decode certain file types if the GPU has an appropriate built-in hardware decoder; support depends on the hardware and file.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Record how the source behaves with the option in its current state.
- Toggle Use hardware decoding when available and restart playback.
- Compare actual stuttering and, if available, CPU and GPU utilization. Test the other setting as well, then keep whichever behaves better on your system.
Do not assume enabling hardware decoding will always help. The result depends on whether the file’s codec and your hardware are supported. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources guide for the setting and source details.
Reduce resolution or scene workload
Test a lower-resolution export
If the MP4’s resolution is much higher than the size at which it appears in your scene or output, test a lower-resolution export. OBS recommends lower-resolution media when the source does not need its full resolution as a way to reduce workload. Compare playback smoothness and visual quality at the size viewers will see; a smaller export may be sufficient for a small on-screen video, but can look worse if enlarged.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
This is a workload test, not evidence that file size alone causes the stutter. Resolution, frame rate, bitrate, codec complexity, and storage behavior are separate properties. OBS’s performance troubleshooting guidance discusses reducing source and system workload.
Test a simpler scene
Temporarily test the Media Source in a scene with fewer sources and effects. Close other GPU-heavy applications only if they are not needed. If the stutter changes, that is evidence the surrounding workload may matter; it does not identify a specific bottleneck on its own.

Compare Media Source with VLC Video
If the problem appears specific to a file or its format, try OBS’s VLC Video source as a compatibility check. VLC Video uses VLC libraries for extended media support and requires VLC to be installed. OBS notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. A different source may behave differently, but OBS documentation does not establish VLC Video as a guaranteed stutter fix.
Compare whether the source opens and plays the file, and whether playback stutters. For general format context, see the OBS Project’s Audio/Video Formats Guide.

If the MP4 still drops video frames
Gather details before changing hardware or making broad system changes. Useful information includes:
- OBS version and operating system.
- The MP4’s codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- Whether the file stutters in a regular player as well as OBS.
- Whether the issue appears in preview, recording, or stream output.
- The OBS log from a session that reproduces the problem.
These details can help distinguish file compatibility from OBS scene or system workload. Without them, there is not enough evidence to name a single cause or prescribe a component upgrade.

If the goal is to keep pre-recorded video live on YouTube rather than troubleshoot local OBS playback, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Its cloud service loops uploaded videos, so nothing has to stay on at home. The stream preserves your uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it is not a camera livestream. Visit StreamNeo for details, or start the free day.
