How to Livestream with Multiple People on YouTube

Use YouTube Go live together for one remote guest, or an encoder workflow for multiple people, cameras, and custom scenes. Here’s how to prepare and go live.

For one remote guest, use YouTube’s native Go live together feature from the YouTube mobile app. For multiple people visible at once, several cameras, overlays, or a more controlled gaming production, send the show through encoder software connected to YouTube Live Control Room. Go live together shows only one guest at a time, though the host can rotate guests.

Choose the right setup

YouTube’s verified-encoder directory includes software described as supporting remote guests, including Cinamaker Director Studio (via Zoom), Ecamm, and Restream. Features and compatibility vary; check the current capabilities and terms with the software provider before choosing. YouTube’s encoder guidance explains the encoder workflow.

Invite one guest with Go live together

YouTube describes Go live together as a feature for eligible creators. A guest needs a YouTube channel. The host controls the invitation and can remove the co-streamer. YouTube’s help information does not give a complete feature-specific eligibility checklist, so check the option in the host’s account rather than assuming a particular subscriber threshold.

  1. Open the mobile app: In YouTube, tap Create, then Live, and edit the video and broadcast settings.
  2. Enable the feature: Turn on Go live together, enter the stream metadata, and choose the option to invite a co-streamer.
  3. Send the invite: Share the invitation link by text, email, or a messaging service. The guest opens it on a mobile device and joins the waiting room. If the link does not open properly in a messaging app, YouTube suggests resending it by email or text.
  4. Check the guest before adding them: Ask them to check their audio and video in the waiting room. When ready, select Add for the waiting guest, then go live.
  5. Manage the guest during the stream: You can rotate guests, but only one guest appears at a time. The host can view stream analytics; the guest cannot.

You can schedule a Go live together stream from Live Control Room on a computer, but the host goes live with the guest from a mobile phone. The layout is vertical by default, so check that it suits your gameplay and on-screen content before choosing this route. YouTube’s Go live together instructions cover the guest workflow.

Use an encoder for several people on screen

An encoder sends a composed video and audio feed to YouTube. It is the more suitable route when you want several contributors visible at once, multiple camera angles, gameplay capture, external audio or video hardware, or a layout with overlays and custom scenes. YouTube does not prescribe a specific microphone or audio interface for this kind of setup.

  1. Plan the scene and audio: Decide who appears where, which cameras and microphones feed the production, and how game audio, guest audio, and commentary will be balanced. If participants are in different locations, use encoder software that supports the remote-guest workflow you need; confirm its current feature set and compatibility directly.
  2. Prepare the YouTube event: Set up the stream in Live Control Room, then connect the encoder using the stream details provided there. Keep the stream key private: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your event.
  3. Build and test the output: Arrange scenes, sources, and audio routing in the encoder. Preview the signal in Live Control Room and check that the picture, sound, and event access are correct before going live.
  4. Start with time to spare: YouTube recommends creating and setting up an encoder stream at least two hours before the event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Use that time to catch problems and verify any backup or failover plan your production needs.

For a multi-person gaming stream, the encoder route also lets the host combine game capture with presenter cameras and microphones in one output. That control comes with more responsibility: the host must monitor the combined audio and video rather than relying on each participant’s local setup to sound balanced.

Check account access, bandwidth, and equipment

  • Verify livestream access: YouTube’s general livestream guidance says a channel must be verified, must not have had livestream restrictions in the past 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. These are general livestream requirements; YouTube’s separate Go live together eligibility wording is not fully explained by that list. First-time livestream activation can take up to 24 hours.
  • Choose equipment for the production: A phone or webcam may be enough for a simple stream. An encoder is useful for external audio/video hardware and more advanced productions. For several in-person speakers, consider a microphone for each person or an appropriate multi-input audio setup; compatibility depends on the computer, phone, interface or mixer, room, and number of speakers.
  • Leave upload headroom: YouTube recommends 20% spare upload bandwidth beyond the stream’s total bitrate. Other people using the same connection can reduce the bandwidth available to the stream.
  • Preview and monitor: Check audio and video in Live Control Room before starting, and keep monitoring them during the broadcast. If you use an encoder, confirm viewers can access the event and test backup or failover if the production requires it.

These are YouTube Help recommendations; the pages retrieved do not show publication dates. For the general eligibility details, see YouTube’s livestreaming help; for setup and testing guidance, see YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

Keep the stream compliant and manageable

The host is responsible for live content and should brief guests on YouTube’s terms, Community Guidelines, and copyright rules before the event. Use the host’s moderation controls to manage the guest, including removing a co-streamer if necessary. For a gaming stream, make sure any music, footage, or other material in the broadcast is permitted for livestream use; a guest’s participation does not shift the host’s responsibility for the stream.
