You can schedule the YouTube broadcast in YouTube Studio and use Windows Task Scheduler to open OBS at a chosen time with OBS’s --startstreaming launch parameter. These are two separate steps: YouTube creates the event and watch page; Windows launches the encoder. This can automate a start, but it does not guarantee a continuous 24/7 stream or recover every failure.
What the setup does—and what it cannot guarantee
A scheduled YouTube event gives viewers a watch page they can share and set reminders for. A scheduled Windows task launches OBS; with --startstreaming, OBS begins sending its configured feed after it opens. The task does not itself create or schedule the YouTube event.
A continuous stream still depends on the Windows computer, OBS, power, the network connection, and YouTube accepting the feed. A task that starts OBS is not, by itself, a fault-tolerant recovery system. Test the full setup and do not assume it will restore service after a crash, reboot, or network outage.
Before you schedule the stream
- Confirm live streaming is enabled for the channel, the channel is verified, and there is no live-streaming restriction. YouTube says first-time live-streaming enablement can take up to 24 hours; after it is enabled, streams can go live instantly. See YouTube live-streaming tips.
- Decide whether the study stream should be one continuous broadcast or a series of separate events. Also decide how viewers will access the event and what you need to retain as a replay.
- Prepare the study scene, video or media source, audio, and OBS profile in advance. Use output settings that the computer and upload connection can sustain.
- Test the scene and stream before relying on an unattended launch. YouTube recommends preparing an encoder well ahead of an event, starting it at least 15 minutes before the event, and checking the preview and stream health. Its tips advise setting up the encoder at least 2 hours ahead. See YouTube live-streaming tips.
Schedule the event in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and enter the Live Control Room.
- Choose Manage, then schedule a stream or create the event you intend to use.
- Set the event details and schedule. Share its watch-page URL with viewers if you want them to visit the event page or set reminders.
- Keep the event selected for the encoder test and the scheduled launch. Confirm that OBS will send its feed to the stream associated with this event.

Configure OBS and YouTube’s encoder settings
Enter the event’s server and stream key
In YouTube Live Control Room, get the stream URL and stream key for the event, then enter them in OBS’s streaming settings. The stream key is sensitive access information that lets an encoder send a feed to YouTube. Do not share it publicly. If it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and replace it in OBS. Choose a sustainable output
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 options. It recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and says the interval should not exceed 4 seconds. Use the bitrate row for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than choosing a bitrate independently of those settings. YouTube recommends a speed test and using a bitrate the connection can reliably sustain. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

For reference, YouTube’s H.264 recommendations list 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p at 30 fps, and 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended for 720p at 30 fps. These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees of stable delivery; select the row that matches your actual output.
Check the scene and audio before automation
Start OBS normally first. Confirm the intended scene, media source, audio, stream key, and output profile. Start a test stream and check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. If appropriate, use a private or unlisted test. Check the picture and sound from the viewer’s perspective, including the watch page, before enabling an unattended launch.

Create a scheduled task to launch OBS
- Find the installed OBS executable, usually named
obs64.exeon a 64-bit Windows installation. Use the actual path on your computer; it varies by installation. - In Windows Task Scheduler, create a task with the trigger that matches when you want OBS to start, such as a particular time. Configure an action to start the OBS executable and pass
--startstreamingas its argument. - Set the task’s Start in working directory to the folder containing
obs64.exe. OBS’s launch-parameter documentation specifically calls out this working-directory setting for scheduled tasks. - Do not assume the task will select a particular OBS scene or profile. Configure the desired scene and profile in OBS or use launch options that OBS supports for your setup.
- Save the task, then run it manually once in the Windows session you intend to use. Verify that OBS opens, starts streaming, and reaches the intended YouTube event.
OBS documents --startstreaming and the working-directory requirement in its Launch Parameters guide. The exact Task Scheduler options for triggers, login behavior, retries, runtime limits, and recovery are not established by that OBS guidance. Test the task under the actual account and session conditions you plan to use; do not treat a successful manual launch as proof of unattended recovery.
Test the complete launch and monitor it
- Verify the scheduled event is the one receiving the feed, and that the Live Control Room preview appears.
- Open the watch page as a viewer and check that the page is accessible and the picture and sound are usable.
- Watch YouTube Studio’s stream-health status and monitor local audio and video quality. A task can launch successfully while the encoder feed or viewer experience still has a problem.
- Test the computer, Windows session, network, and actual scheduled task—not just OBS’s manual Start Streaming button.
- Decide how you will notice an interruption and what you will do if OBS or the connection fails. The documented launch parameter starts streaming at OBS launch; it does not establish a universal automatic-recovery configuration.
Plan for replays and the end of the broadcast
YouTube says encoder streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. A single 24-hour broadcast is longer than that stated automatic-archive duration, so do not assume it will produce one complete automatic replay. If retaining a replay matters, plan for shorter events or another deliberate archive workflow. The cited YouTube guidance does not promise a single automatic replay for a continuous 24/7 event. Troubleshoot common failures
