On Windows, OBS Studio portable mode keeps OBS settings beside the application so a dedicated streaming PC can use an isolated configuration. It does not bundle the images or video files used by scenes, and it does not make OBS a self-recovering 24/7 service. To use it, extract OBS’s ZIP, add an empty portable_mode file to the application folder or launch obs64.exe --portable, then configure and test the stream, media paths, and startup routine.
What OBS portable mode changes—and what it does not
OBS describes portable mode as loading its configuration directory from the same path as the application. This makes an OBS setup easier to relocate and lets separate instances keep their profiles and scene collections apart. The OBS Project’s portable-mode documentation was published on July 23, 2024.
Portable mode is configuration portability, not a complete copy of everything a scene uses. OBS specifically notes that files referenced by a scene collection—including images and media—are not portable. A collection may open while showing missing-file errors if the media is elsewhere or its paths no longer resolve.
- Kept with the portable instance: OBS configuration, including profiles and scene collections.
- Not automatically included: referenced videos, images, and other external media assets.
- Not provided by portable mode: a watchdog, Windows restart recovery, or a guarantee that an unattended stream will reconnect.
Portable mode is documented for Windows. OBS says it is not supported on macOS or Linux; on those systems, use the standard installation method.

Set up OBS portable mode on the dedicated PC
1. Check the channel and computer before installing
YouTube requires live streaming to be enabled, a verified channel, and no live-streaming restriction during the preceding 90 days. YouTube’s general setup guidance says users must be at least 16. For first-time activation, YouTube says live streaming can take up to 24 hours to become available, so check eligibility well before the planned broadcast.
For the PC, OBS lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU in its basic Windows requirements. Meeting those requirements does not guarantee adequate streaming or recording performance. OBS says workload depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; there is no universal CPU or RAM figure that guarantees a suitable 24/7 setup. Run OBS’s Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard on the actual machine and validate the resulting settings with your real scenes and output.

2. Extract the Windows ZIP and enable portable mode
- Download the OBS Studio ZIP for Windows and extract it into a user folder you can manage, rather than
Program Files. - In the extracted application root—the folder containing OBS’s application files—create an empty file named
portable_modeorportable_mode.txt. Alternatively, launchbin/64bit/obs64.exewith the--portableargument (the short form is-p). - Start OBS and create or import the profile and scene collection for this channel. Keep this portable folder in a stable location; moving it later can change how media paths resolve.
Windows may hide known file extensions. If you choose the marker-file method, check the actual filename so it is not unintentionally saved as portable_mode.txt.txt. For the exact supported method and folder context, see OBS’s portable-mode instructions.
3. Make scene media paths dependable
Store referenced video and image files in a stable location on the PC, then point OBS sources to those files. Avoid relying on temporary folders, removable drives that may be absent, or paths that change when you move the portable OBS folder. If you transfer the setup to another computer, copy the media separately and edit source paths as needed. Reopen the scene collection and verify every source before going live.

4. Configure and test the YouTube encoder stream
In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select an encoder stream and use the stream key in OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or share it with anyone who does not need access. Use YouTube’s encoder setup guide for the current account and stream workflow.
Choose resolution, frame rate, and encoder settings based on the source material, scene complexity, available hardware, and YouTube’s current encoder recommendations. The cited OBS sources do not establish one bitrate, keyframe interval, or preset that is right for every PC and stream. Use YouTube’s applicable recommendations and test the actual output rather than assuming portable mode changes encoding behavior.

Can OBS start streaming automatically?
OBS supports launch parameters for portable mode and automatic stream start. Its launch-parameters reference documents --portable (or -p) and --startstreaming. It also documents --profile, --collection, and --scene for selecting a profile, scene collection, and scene at launch.

Test the command interactively first: confirm OBS opens the intended collection and scene, uses the expected stream key, and produces a healthy preview before relying on automatic start. The launch parameters do not constitute a complete unattended-recovery plan; the documentation does not promise recovery after a Windows restart, OBS crash, power loss, or YouTube disconnect.

Use YouTube’s event guidance as a baseline, while recognizing it addresses encoder-stream operation and does not guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast. YouTube recommends preparing at least two hours before an event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before its scheduled time. That lead time is especially useful for the first live test or after changing scenes, keys, or network setup.
- Check the Live Control Room preview before treating the stream as live and ready.
- Confirm the local archive file is growing if you are recording an archive.
- Check that the event is accessible from the channel/watch page and on mobile.
- Monitor audio and video continuously; a running OBS window alone does not show that viewers are receiving a usable stream.
- After a scheduled event, stop the encoder after the event has stopped on YouTube. For a continuous channel, define who checks the live output and what they do when it fails.
YouTube’s recommendations are in its live-streaming tips. They should be treated as operational checks, not as evidence of a guaranteed uptime level.
Troubleshoot common portable-PC failures
- OBS opens with a different profile or empty scenes: confirm you launched the extracted executable with
--portableor that the marker file is in the application root. Check that you are not opening a separate standard OBS installation. - Media sources are missing: the files are external to the scene collection. Restore them at an accessible path, then edit the source paths in OBS and verify playback.
- The stream does not start when OBS launches: check the spelling and placement of the launch arguments, confirm the correct executable and stream configuration, and test the command manually. A launch flag does not bypass channel eligibility, a valid stream key, or YouTube’s stream setup.
- YouTube does not show a usable preview: verify the selected scene, audio and video sources, stream key, and encoder output in the Live Control Room. Do not treat an OBS status indicator alone as proof that the public watch page is receiving the intended stream.
- Performance degrades or frames are missed: reassess the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity on the actual PC. OBS’s basic requirements are not a performance guarantee; use the Auto-Configuration Wizard and test a representative workload.
- The stream stops after a crash, restart, or dropped connection: portable mode and launch parameters are not a watchdog or full recovery system. Check Windows startup behavior, OBS logs and stream state, and YouTube’s Live Control Room; manually restore the stream if needed.
