1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf OBS on your Mac will not play a playlist, first identify which app is supposed to play it. For local video files, use VLC Video with Loop Playlist enabled; the regular Media Source is for a single file and loops that file. A YouTube watch-page URL is a different playback path, and a reported failure on older macOS and OBS versions does not establish a problem—or a fix—in current versions.
Set up a playlist of local videos in OBS
- Choose the scene that feeds your stream. In OBS, inspect its Sources list and identify the source meant to show the videos. A source in a different scene will not control the video in the scene you are streaming.
- Add VLC Video. In Sources, select + and choose VLC Video. If it is missing, install VLC; OBS says VLC must be installed for this source to appear. Match the architecture: use 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. See OBS’s Media Sources documentation.
- Add the files in playback order. Open the VLC Video properties, add the local video files, and arrange them in the order you want. Enable Loop Playlist to repeat the set. Leave Shuffle Playlist off if you need a fixed sequence.
- Check visibility behavior. OBS documents the default behavior as stopping playback when the source is not visible and restarting it when visible. If switching scenes makes the playlist appear to stop or start over, check this property and keep the source visible as needed.
- Test one file, then the playlist. Try a single local file in the same scene first. If it plays but the YouTube URL does not, you have isolated two different playback paths; the local playlist controls do not diagnose URL playback.
OBS’s built-in Media Source supports individual files in these formats: .mp4, .ts, .mov, .flv, .mkv, .avi, .gif, and .webm. Its Loop option repeats that one file. VLC Video uses VLC libraries for extended media support and provides playlist controls.
Why OBS may not play a YouTube playlist URL on Mac
A YouTube watch-page URL loaded into VLC Video is not the same as a playlist of local files. A GitHub issue opened on September 12, 2020 reported that YouTube video playback failed in OBS VLC Video Source on macOS 10.15.6 with OBS 25.0.8, although the reporter said it worked in VLC.app and in OBS’s VLC source on Windows. That report is specific to older software and does not establish what happens with current macOS, OBS, or VLC versions, or provide a confirmed current fix. See the OBS Studio issue report.
If local files work but a YouTube URL does not, treat the URL as a separate compatibility problem. Check the current OBS, VLC, and macOS versions and their relevant documentation rather than assuming the old report applies to your setup. The available evidence does not establish a present-day resolution.

Do not confuse OBS playback with YouTube’s loop button
YouTube’s loop control repeats playback in the YouTube player; it does not set OBS’s Media Source or VLC Video playlist to repeat. YouTube’s instructions are to open a video in the playlist, expand the playlist, then select Loop in the playlist box. That changes playback in YouTube, not the source configuration in OBS. See YouTube’s instructions for looping videos or playlists.
Optional OBS playlist alternative for macOS
The OBS Forums listing for Media Playlist Source describes it as a macOS-capable plugin alternative to VLC Video. Its latest update notes specify a minimum of OBS 31 and list playlist editing, file or folder selection, and shuffle features. The listing also describes limitations: folder contents do not refresh automatically, audio-track and subtitle selection are unsupported, and the displayed current filename does not automatically refresh at video end due to a stated crash concern. Check the listing for current compatibility and details before installing: Media Playlist Source on the OBS Forums.

Troubleshoot dropped frames separately
If the playlist plays but OBS’s dropped-frames counter is rising, the symptom points to the stream connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain—not to a source failing to start or advance its playlist. Follow the separate network and output troubleshooting path in the OBS Help Portal.
