FFmpeg YouTube Live Loop Audio Out of Sync: How to Diagnose and Fix It

Find out whether your FFmpeg YouTube Live loop has a fixed offset, growing drift, or a loop-boundary jump—and how to investigate the right cause before changing sync settings.

If audio and video drift out of sync during an FFmpeg YouTube Live loop, first identify whether the offset is constant, grows over time, or jumps at each repeat. Those patterns point to different causes: a start-time offset, mismatched timing, or a loop-boundary discontinuity. Don’t add a guessed audio delay before checking the source timestamps, stream mapping, and FFmpeg sync options.

Classify the sync problem first

Note when the mismatch begins and whether it changes. A fixed offset and cumulative drift are different problems, and a correction for one may make the other worse.

  • Wrong from the start, then steady: investigate the relationship between the audio and video start times. Only consider a fixed offset after measuring which stream leads and by how much.
  • Gets worse over time: inspect the audio and video timelines, source timestamps, frame-rate conversion, and output synchronization behavior. A one-time timestamp shift will not correct an ongoing rate mismatch.
  • Jumps or resets at each repeat: inspect the media near the end and beginning of the loop for stream-boundary or timestamp-continuity issues.
  • Looks wrong only in YouTube playback: compare the local output with YouTube’s Live preview and stream-health indicators before deciding whether the problem is in the source, encoder, ingest, or playback path.

These are diagnostic distinctions, not a confirmed diagnosis for every loop. The right correction depends on your command, FFmpeg build, media, and observed drift.

Inspect the media’s audio and video timelines

Before changing the command, record the metadata for both streams with ffprobe. Check the codec, start time, duration, audio sample rate, video frame rate, and time-base or timestamp information. Compare the audio and video starts and durations rather than relying on the file’s overall duration alone.

YouTube’s upload troubleshooting guidance notes that audio and video tracks with different durations may not sync correctly and advises editing the tracks so their durations match. That is a useful source-level check; it does not establish that unequal duration causes every live-loop sync problem.

Listen or inspect near the start and immediately around the repeat point. If the mismatch appears or changes sharply at the boundary, focus on how the file’s streams and timestamps meet there. If it steadily accumulates without a boundary jump, investigate the timing relationship and output synchronization instead.

Check the FFmpeg command and timestamp behavior

Confirm the loop applies to the intended input

FFmpeg documents -stream_loop as an input option. Check that it appears before the input it is meant to loop, and verify that the intended audio and video streams are mapped to the output together. Stream mapping can affect which stream’s timestamps are used for synchronization.

Do not treat -stream_loop -1 as a general-purpose sync fix. It repeats an input; it does not by itself correct a mismatch in the streams’ timing.

Review output frame synchronization

FFmpeg’s -fps_mode setting affects how output video timestamps and frames are handled:

  • passthrough passes demuxer timestamps through.
  • cfr duplicates or drops frames to achieve a requested constant frame rate.
  • vfr passes timestamps through or drops frames to avoid duplicate timestamps.
  • auto selects a mode based on what the muxer supports.

The muxer may also modify timestamps. Choose a mode based on the source and delivery requirements; adding one blindly is not an audio-delay fix. The legacy -vsync option is deprecated in current FFmpeg documentation. Check the documentation for your installed build before changing synchronization options, since available behavior can vary by version.

FFmpeg notes that “You can leave either video or audio unchanged and sync the remaining stream(s) to the unchanged one.” That describes an available approach, not which stream should be the reference for your particular file.

Observe playback and compare the live output

When useful, play the source or output with FFplay and enable -stats. FFplay’s statistics include the current position and audio/video synchronization drift, which can help reveal whether the mismatch grows. Master-clock selection is mainly a debugging option; local playback observations do not guarantee that YouTube receives identical timing.

Verify YouTube encoder settings

YouTube’s general encoder recommendations cover RTMP and RTMPS streaming. They list AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. For audio, the recommendations specify 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1 audio; recommended audio bitrates are 128 kbps for stereo and 384 kbps for 5.1. These are ingest recommendations, not a diagnosis or guaranteed cure for sync drift.

YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and video before going live, then monitoring stream health. Its live encoder setup guidance explains entering the stream URL and stream key. Treat the key as a credential that allows YouTube to accept your feed, and keep it private.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP. If connection diagnostics point to a transport problem, check the correct server URL and whether your encoder supports RTMPS; YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting discusses port 443 where an SSL connection requires it. Switching protocols is not a synchronization fix unless the evidence points to a connection issue.

A practical troubleshooting sequence

  1. Preserve your current setup. Save the command and note your FFmpeg version before editing anything.
  2. Classify the symptom. Record whether the offset is steady, grows during playback, or jumps at each loop point.
  3. Inspect the source streams. Use ffprobe to compare audio and video start times, durations, sample rate, frame rate, and timestamp or time-base metadata.
  4. Check the command. Verify input ordering for -stream_loop, stream mapping, and any timestamp or frame-sync options against documentation for your installed FFmpeg build.
  5. Compare local and YouTube playback. Use FFplay statistics where helpful, then compare with YouTube’s Live preview and stream-health indicators.
  6. Test YouTube’s encoder recommendations. Use a representative test and change only one relevant variable at a time.
  7. Apply a correction that matches the evidence. Use a measured fixed offset only for a stable offset. For growing drift, investigate timing or rate behavior rather than choosing a fixed delay.

Common mistakes and what to do instead

  • Adding a guessed audio delay: measure which stream leads and whether the difference changes first. A fixed delay cannot correct cumulative drift.
  • Changing several options at once: preserve the original command and test one change at a time so you can isolate the effect.
  • Assuming loop mode fixes synchronization: check timestamps and stream continuity at the repeat point; looping alone does not correct timing.
  • Changing RTMP to RTMPS to fix drift: check transport only when connection diagnostics indicate a transport issue.
  • Assuming a local playback result proves what YouTube receives: compare local behavior with YouTube’s Live preview and stream health.

Or let it run in the cloud
