If a media source is silent on your YouTube stream, first watch that source’s meter in the OBS Audio Mixer while the file is playing. No meter movement points to playback, source selection, or audio capture; a moving meter means audio reaches OBS, so check mute, fader, filters, monitoring, and the audio track routed to the stream. A meter alone does not prove viewers can hear it.
Trace the sound through OBS in order
Work through the signal path one stage at a time: media playback and source properties → the source’s OBS meter → mute, fader, filters and monitoring → stream-track assignment and encoder output → YouTube Live Control Room. The first point where the sound disappears narrows the cause.
- Play the media and confirm the intended source is active in the scene.
- Watch that specific source’s meter in the Audio Mixer while sound should be playing.
- If the meter moves, check mute, fader, filters, monitoring and track routing.
- Make a short local test recording, then check the encoder and YouTube preview if needed.
OBS explains that a missing input indicator means no audio is reaching that meter point, although it may simply be too early in playback for audio to be available. The input meter is after filters and before the fader, so it helps identify which part of the chain to inspect. OBS Audio Mixer Technical Details
Check media playback and the source type
Built-in Media Source
Confirm that the Media Source is in the active scene, the intended file path is valid, and playback has started. OBS documents video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV. In the source properties, check whether options such as Loop, Restart playback when source becomes active, or Close file when inactive affect when the file plays. The built-in Media Source does not use the VLC Video Audio Track selector. See OBS Media Sources.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
VLC Video source or playlist
VLC must be installed for OBS’s VLC Video source. If an item has multiple audio streams, inspect the source’s Audio Track property; OBS documents track 1 as the default. Check the intended playlist item and track rather than assuming the file’s first stream contains the desired audio. The VLC Video controls differ from those of the built-in Media Source. OBS Media Sources
Captured application or audio device
If the sound is coming from an application or a device rather than directly from a media file, verify that the right capture source is present and active. OBS’s quick-start guide says desktop audio and microphone are captured by default, but recommends checking Audio Mixer meters and selecting devices under Settings → Audio if a meter does not move or the wrong device is captured. On Linux, audio-device capture instructions differ from Windows and macOS, so follow the guidance for your operating system. OBS Quick Start Guide and OBS Audio Sources

Be alert for duplicate capture: OBS warns that an Audio Input/Output Capture source can cause echo if the same device is also selected under Settings → Audio. If you intentionally capture a device directly in the scene, disable its duplicate global capture.
If the media source meter does not move
- Confirm the media is actually playing; a meter cannot show audio before playback produces it.
- Check that the intended source is in the active scene and that the correct file or playlist item is selected.
- For VLC Video, confirm VLC is installed and inspect its Audio Track selection.
- For captured application or device audio, verify the correct capture source and device selection for your operating system.
- Check whether source filters are suppressing sound. Since the input meter is after filters, temporarily disabling filters can help isolate a filter issue.
Do not rely only on the desktop-audio meter when troubleshooting a media source: identify and watch the relevant source’s own meter. OBS’s meter guidance explains what its input indicator represents.

If the meter moves, check OBS routing
Mute, fader and filters
In the Audio Mixer, make sure the source is not muted and its fader is not turned down. Inspect filters if the meter or output behaves unexpectedly; temporarily disabling a filter is a useful isolation step, not a permanent fix unless you have confirmed the filter is the cause.
Monitoring is for listening, not stream routing
Use Edit → Advanced Audio Properties to inspect the source’s monitoring setting and listen through the monitoring device configured in OBS. A working set of headphones or another existing monitor output is sufficient; buying headphones will not correct track routing. OBS documents Audio Monitoring as a way to hear audio through the configured device and recommends listening at points in the audio chain. OBS Audio Mixer Guide

If monitoring is silent, troubleshoot the monitoring device and source’s monitor setting. If monitoring works, that proves only that the monitoring route works. It does not prove the source is assigned to the stream’s output track.
Check the stream track, not just recording tracks
Open Advanced Audio Properties from the mixer gear or the Edit menu and compare the source’s track boxes with the track selected for streaming in the installed OBS version’s Output settings. Exact labels and options can vary by release. Do not confuse Settings → Output recording-track selections with the active streaming track.

OBS’s multiple-audio-track guide is about recording, not definitive current instructions for selecting a live-stream track. It notes that ordinary video players generally play only one audio track and recommends assigning all sources to track 1 for standard playback when separate tracks are not needed for editing. That recording advice does not establish which track your stream currently uses. OBS Multiple Audio Track Recording Guide
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test OBS before investigating YouTube
Make a short test recording using the same scene and media playback, then listen to it. OBS recommends checking the mixer and making a brief test before going live. YouTube likewise advises checking the sound directly in the encoder and comparing it with a local archive. OBS Quick Start Guide and YouTube live-stream troubleshooting
- No sound in the local recording: Continue troubleshooting the media source, capture, filters, mute/fader state or OBS routing.
- Sound in the local recording but not in the live preview: Check the streaming-track assignment and encoder output, then inspect YouTube’s stream health and errors.
Check YouTube Live Control Room audio errors
If OBS output and the local recording have sound but the Live Control Room preview is silent, move the investigation to the encoder output, stream health, outbound network or YouTube delivery instead of repeatedly replacing the media file. Use the actual warning shown for the event and the selected ingest protocol as your immediate guide. YouTube’s error help identifies several possible audio problems:
- No audio stream: The encoder may be sending no audio; some encoders have a control to enable it.
- Multiple audio streams: YouTube’s guidance says multiple streams can cause ingestion problems.
- Unsupported audio codec: The help page lists AAC or MP3 in its codec guidance.
- Sample-rate or bitrate warning: The relevant YouTube error examples refer to a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps audio bitrate.
These are YouTube help-page recommendations associated with particular errors, not universal settings for every protocol or a substitute for the current dashboard message. YouTube’s codecs and recommendations may change; check the current YouTube live-stream error messages. Preview and monitor the event’s audio and video quality in Live Control Room, as YouTube recommends in its streaming tips.
