To change the thumbnail on a completed YouTube Live stream, open YouTube Studio and go to Content → Live. Select the Live Replay, open its details, replace the image in Thumbnail, and save. For a scheduled stream, edit it under Go Live → Manage; the thumbnail control may not appear in every version of that screen.
First, identify the stream’s state
“Video loop” is not YouTube’s standard label for this item. The steps depend on whether the broadcast is scheduled, currently being set up, or has ended. YouTube calls an archived broadcast a Live Replay.
- Ended broadcast: change the thumbnail on its Live Replay in Studio.
- Scheduled broadcast: edit the stream from the Go Live management screen. The exact thumbnail control can vary.
- Webcam setup: YouTube says the camera takes a thumbnail during setup; that does not guarantee a custom-upload control at that step.
Change a completed stream’s thumbnail
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Select Content in the left menu, then open the Live tab. Find the completed broadcast, listed as a Live Replay.
- Select the replay to open its details.
- In Thumbnail, upload or select the replacement image.
- Select Save.
YouTube’s general video-thumbnail instructions use the same details-page flow: select the video, choose Thumbnail, use Upload file, then save. See YouTube’s custom thumbnail instructions and its live-stream help.
Change a scheduled stream’s thumbnail
- In YouTube Studio, select Go Live, then Manage.
- Select the scheduled stream and choose Edit.
- If the editing screen shows a thumbnail field, upload or select the image and save the changes.
- If there is no thumbnail field, YouTube’s current official instructions do not establish another guaranteed control for every scheduled stream. After the broadcast ends, change the image on its Live Replay using the steps above.
YouTube confirms that scheduled streams and stream settings can be edited, but the thumbnail control is not documented identically for every state or screen. See YouTube’s live-stream scheduling instructions.

Prepare an image YouTube accepts
YouTube’s published video-thumbnail guidance recommends these specifications:
- Aspect ratio: 16:9.
- Dimensions: 3840 × 2160 pixels where possible; minimum width 640 pixels.
- File type: JPG or PNG.
- File size: up to 50 MB for desktop uploads; mobile uploads have a 2 MB limit.
These are YouTube’s stated recommendations and limits. Check the upload device’s limit before retrying a file that fails. YouTube’s thumbnail help page has the current specifications.

Check account eligibility and thumbnail rules
A verified YouTube account is required to use custom thumbnails. Thumbnails also have to follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines. YouTube may impose daily upload limits that vary by region or channel history, and strikes can affect access. If Studio says you have reached the daily limit, YouTube advises trying again after 24 hours. See YouTube’s custom thumbnail eligibility and limits.
Troubleshoot a thumbnail that will not change
- You cannot find the stream: check that you are in Content → Live for a completed broadcast, or Go Live → Manage for a scheduled one.
- The upload option is missing: confirm that your account is verified. On a scheduled stream, the thumbnail field may not be shown in every editing screen; update the replay after the stream ends if needed.
- The image is rejected: check the format, dimensions, aspect ratio, and file-size limit for the device you are using.
- Studio reports a daily limit: follow YouTube’s instruction to try again after 24 hours.
- The old image still appears: confirm that you saved the change, then allow time for it to appear. YouTube warns, “It may take time for your thumbnail changes to appear on YouTube,” and does not specify a display time.
If the thumbnail violates YouTube’s Community Guidelines, correct the image rather than repeatedly uploading the same one.
