Choose how the lessons will play
There are two practical approaches: run playback locally in OBS Studio, or upload lessons to a cloud service that plays a playlist. With OBS, the computer running the broadcast and its lesson files must remain available. With a cloud service, check how that provider handles schedules, retries, storage, and maximum stream duration before relying on it.

Prepare the lessons and YouTube broadcast
Check rights and files
Make sure you have permission to stream every lesson, including its video, slides, music, and any other included material. Copyright claims or takedowns can disrupt a stream or affect the channel. YouTube’s copyright guidance explains its rules; review the copyright safety checklist as a practical preflight aid.
Arrange the videos in the intended teaching order and check that each file plays properly from beginning to end. If you are using OBS, make the files accessible at stable locations; moving or renaming a file after configuring a source can leave OBS unable to find it.

Set up YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a broadcast using the current options shown in your account.
- For an encoder-based broadcast, copy the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube’s encoder setup into OBS. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who gets it may be able to broadcast to your channel. YouTube’s current setup instructions are in its live encoder help.
- Start sending video from OBS, then confirm the broadcast actually transitions to live in the Control Room. Scheduling the YouTube event and sending an encoder signal are separate actions; a scheduled event alone does not play the lessons.
Queue recorded lessons in OBS Studio
OBS interface labels and available source options can change between versions. The following workflow describes the setup principle; check the current OBS interface if a label differs. An OBS community guide last updated in 2021 describes a local 24/7 workflow, but YouTube scheduling does not remove the need for OBS to keep supplying media: OBS community guide.
- Open OBS Studio and create a scene for the study stream.
- Add the lesson videos as media sources in the order you want them to play. Configure each source to stop or transition when playback ends, rather than looping an individual lesson forever. Use a playlist-capable media source or a scene/source sequence if your OBS version or chosen plugin supports it; verify the behavior locally before going live.
- Set the transition between lessons. A cut is simplest; a brief fade can make the switch less abrupt. Confirm that the next source becomes visible and audible when the previous one ends.
- In OBS Settings, open the Stream section, select YouTube as the service if offered, and provide the server URL and stream key from YouTube. Alternatively, use the current custom-server option and enter the YouTube URL and key exactly as shown in the Live Control Room.
- In Settings, open Output and Video and choose a resolution and bitrate your upload connection can sustain. YouTube’s current encoder requirements and recommended settings should take precedence over generic presets: YouTube live encoder settings. Use a stable connection and test for dropped frames before scheduling a long run.
- Start the stream in OBS, then verify in YouTube Live Control Room that the signal is received and the intended audience-facing broadcast is live. Preview the video and audio, including a transition between lessons.
OBS playback is not self-sustaining if the computer sleeps, loses power, disconnects from the internet, or can no longer read a source file. Disable sleep for the planned run, keep the computer powered, and use a local recovery plan for outages. A computer restart, OBS crash, or network interruption may require operator intervention; do not treat a scheduled event as an encoder-recovery mechanism.

Plan for YouTube archives and replay
YouTube says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For a stream that runs longer, do not assume the complete broadcast will be available as an archive: YouTube’s live stream archive guidance. YouTube also warns that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for very long live streams, including streams beyond 12 hours: YouTube DVR guidance. If students need the full lesson sequence afterward, keep a separate recording or publish the lessons individually where you have the rights.

Troubleshoot common failures
