You can loop a compatible video file to YouTube Live with FFmpeg without re-encoding its video or audio streams. Use -stream_loop -1 to repeat the input indefinitely and -c copy to pass the encoded streams through. This avoids encoding on your computer, but it does not guarantee every file will work with YouTube’s ingest format or produce a seamless loop boundary.
What you need before you start
- A verified YouTube channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
- FFmpeg installed on a computer that can remain connected and online for the duration of the stream.
- A video file whose existing video and audio streams can be muxed into YouTube’s live ingest output without changing codecs or applying filters.
- The stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Keep the key private: YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address” in its live stream settings guidance.
Loop and stream the file with FFmpeg
1. Create or select an encoder stream
In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then create or select an encoder stream in Live Control Room. Copy the server URL and stream key displayed there. YouTube’s labels and layout can change, so use the values shown for the selected stream rather than relying on an old URL copied from another setup.
2. Check the file’s streams
Before streaming, confirm that the file contains the intended video and audio and that the selected streams can be passed through to the output. Stream copy does not decode, scale, filter, or convert codecs. If you need to add graphics, change resolution, alter audio, or convert an unsupported stream, this is no longer a pure no-re-encoding workflow.
3. Run the loop command
Use this as a command shape, replacing the placeholders with your actual file path and the server URL and key from YouTube Studio:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "input.mp4" -c copy -f flv "<YouTube server URL>/<stream key>"
Keep -stream_loop -1 before -i: it tells FFmpeg to loop that input indefinitely. -re paces file reading in real time rather than sending the file as fast as the computer can read it. -c copy requests stream copy for the output, and -f flv selects the output format used in this command shape. FFmpeg’s current documentation describes these options; check the documentation for your installed version.
The example is not universal. The source container, codecs, timestamps, and the target muxer all affect compatibility. If FFmpeg reports that a stream cannot be written or YouTube does not accept the feed, stream copy may not suit that file and output combination. Do not add arbitrary codec or bitrate flags expecting them to transform the file while still preserving the original encoded streams.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
4. Check the preview and go live
Wait for the incoming feed to appear in Live Control Room. Check that both video and audio play as intended before starting the public broadcast, then keep monitoring stream health while it runs. YouTube recommends upload capacity with 20% headroom above the stream’s total bitrate; see its live encoder settings and bandwidth guidance.
5. Plan for the stream’s end
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a longer continuous stream will be archived as one video; plan the broadcast duration and any archive handling accordingly. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

What “without re-encoding” does—and does not—mean
In FFmpeg, -c copy copies encoded packets from the input to the output without decoding and encoding them again. That saves local encoding work and avoids another generation of encoding loss. It does not make incompatible streams compatible: the output muxer can reject streams when it lacks required information, and copied streams cannot be processed with filters.
Nor does stream copy promise a gapless transition when the file repeats. Loop-boundary behavior depends on the specific media and its timestamps; test the actual file and feed. Finally, “without re-encoding” describes your encoder workflow, not a guarantee that YouTube plays the original file bytes untouched. YouTube processes live streams for playback, and its cited guidance does not promise byte-for-byte preservation.

What to try if the stream fails
- No incoming preview: Recheck the server URL and stream key in Live Control Room, and confirm FFmpeg is still running. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in Studio before trying again.
- FFmpeg reports an output or muxing error: The source streams may not fit the selected output. Stream copy cannot convert codecs or apply filters. Use an offline compatible remux or re-encode if necessary, understanding that either may change the file or involve encoding.
- Video or audio is missing: Check which streams are present in the source and whether each can be copied into the output. A command that works for one file is not proof that a different container or codec combination will work.
- The repeated transition stutters, pauses, or jumps: Stream copy does not guarantee a seamless loop. Test the boundary; if it is unacceptable, prepare a compatible source or choose a workflow that encodes the feed.
- The broadcast becomes unstable: Check the outgoing connection and maintain the recommended 20% upload headroom above total stream bitrate. YouTube also recommends monitoring quality during the broadcast.
Other ways to keep prerecorded video live
If retaining the original encoded streams is the priority, FFmpeg stream copy is the direct DIY option when the file is compatible. OBS is a graphical production tool, but a normal OBS scene output encodes a composed live scene; do not assume that adding a video source preserves its existing encoded streams. YouTube lists OBS as open-source software available at no charge in its encoder directory.
For unattended prerecorded broadcasts, StreamNeo is the first cloud option to consider: it keeps a YouTube stream running from uploaded videos, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and gives you the first day free. YouTube’s encoder directory also lists Gyre as a cloud-based prerecorded 24/7 streaming tool; check its current features and terms directly, since the listing does not establish whether it avoids re-encoding.
