You can run OBS on a Mac mini continuously by sending a live production to YouTube through Live Control Room, but the Mac’s compatibility does not guarantee uninterrupted operation. Confirm live access, choose an encoder that fits your Mac, set a conservative output, verify upload capacity, and test the complete stream before relying on it. OBS on a Mac mini is suited to scenes made from live inputs and overlays; replaying uploaded videos around the clock is a different workflow.
Before you set up a 24/7 stream
A 24/7 stream made with OBS is a live encoder workflow: OBS renders and sends the scene running on your Mac mini. The Mac, OBS, power, and network connection therefore need to remain available. It is not the same as continuously replaying prerecorded videos from a cloud service.
- Confirm live access first. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s live-streaming tips
- Choose a modest initial target. Resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene complexity all affect the Mac’s workload.
- Plan for monitoring and recovery. A continuous stream needs someone or something to notice a dropped connection, silent audio, or an unhealthy feed.
Check Mac mini and OBS compatibility
OBS lists macOS 11 (Big Sur) or later and an Intel or Apple Silicon processor as its macOS baseline. OBS cautions that a compatible system is not necessarily capable of streaming or recording at a particular workload. Actual capacity depends on the encoder, output resolution and frame rate, and the complexity of scenes and sources. Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then test the actual production. OBS system requirements
Choose the encoder for your Mac’s processor
- Apple Silicon: OBS documents Apple VideoToolbox hardware encoding for H.264 streaming.
- Intel: OBS says VideoToolbox streaming is unsupported for services requiring constant bitrate and directs Intel users to x264. Do not assume an Intel Mac mini has the same encoder options as an Apple Silicon model. OBS hardware encoding
Apple’s Mac mini specifications list M6 and M5 Pro configurations and hardware-accelerated H.264 and HEVC video encoding. Those hardware specifications do not establish that any particular Mac mini can sustain a specific OBS scene 24/7. Apple Mac mini technical specifications

Enable YouTube Live and connect OBS
- Enable and verify live access. In YouTube, verify the channel and enable live streaming well ahead of launch. If this is the channel’s first stream, allow up to 24 hours for activation. Check that the channel has no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube live-streaming tips
- Create or schedule the event. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule the broadcast. YouTube’s encoder setup is described in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Copy the stream key and URL into OBS. YouTube describes the stream key as both the encoder’s feed address and password. Treat it as a secret: do not expose it in a screenshot, public guide, or screen recording. The stream URL tells OBS where to send the feed. Prefer RTMPS where supported; YouTube describes it as RTMP transported over TLS/SSL. Manage live stream settings
- Configure OBS’s YouTube service. Select YouTube as the service and enter the event’s stream key. Keep the event and OBS settings aligned, then start the encoder and confirm the incoming preview in Live Control Room before going live.
Set OBS output for a stable YouTube stream
For a typical SDR H.264 stream, YouTube’s undated encoder-settings guidance, accessed in 2026, recommends the following values. These are platform recommendations, not a promise that a given connection or Mac will sustain them. YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
| Output target | Recommended H.264 video bitrate | Frame rate | Keyframes | Rate control and audio |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 SDR | 5 Mbps | 30 fps | 2-second interval; do not exceed 4 seconds | CBR; AAC or MP3 audio. Advanced guidance: Rec. 709 SDR color, 44.1 kHz stereo, 128 kbps stereo audio. |
| 1080p60 SDR | 6 Mbps | 60 fps | 2-second interval; do not exceed 4 seconds | CBR; AAC or MP3 audio. Advanced guidance: Rec. 709 SDR color, 44.1 kHz stereo, 128 kbps stereo audio. |
In OBS, set the output encoder, bitrate, rate control, keyframe interval, frame rate, and audio format to match the chosen target and YouTube’s current guidance. Keep resolution and frame rate within what the scene and network can sustain; 1080p60 is not automatically a better choice if it leaves too little upload margin or strains the production.

Calculate upload headroom
Test upload speed, not download speed. YouTube recommends roughly 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate. For a 5 Mbps video target plus 128 kbps audio, the encoded payload is about 5.13 Mbps; adding 20% yields roughly 6.2 Mbps usable upload as a starting minimum for one stream. This is arithmetic from YouTube’s recommended settings and headroom guidance, not a measured benchmark. Allow more margin if the connection is variable or shared with other devices. If using a backup stream, YouTube says to account for the primary stream, backup stream, and headroom together. YouTube streaming tips
Build the scene and test before launch
Test the same audio and movement you expect in the actual broadcast. YouTube recommends configuring at least two hours before an event, starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start, previewing in Live Control Room, checking the channel/watch page and mobile access, and monitoring sound and picture. It also advises monitoring stream health and messages during the event. Encoder settings and testing · Live-streaming tips

Preflight checklist for continuous operation
- Confirm the Live Control Room preview shows the expected picture and audio before announcing the stream.
- Check that every scene source works and that audio does not go silent when a source changes or a media item ends.
- Observe stream health during a realistic test rather than relying only on OBS’s local preview.
- Decide how an outage will be detected and who will respond. Test any reconnect or restart behavior rather than assuming OBS or macOS will recover in a particular way.
- Keep the Mac mini, router, and required network equipment powered and connected for the intended run.
Plan around drops, outages, and archives
YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. For a local OBS setup, a network failure, Mac shutdown, or encoder problem can interrupt the feed. Monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicator and messages, and make a practical response plan for restarting OBS or correcting the source of the outage. YouTube supports testing backup-encoder failover, but that does not guarantee automatic recovery from every failure.
The current maximum duration for one uninterrupted YouTube live event and the archive behavior for a stream kept running around the clock are not established here. Do not assume YouTube will preserve a complete single archive of the entire run; check current YouTube guidance if a continuous recording is important. YouTube’s encoder streaming guidance

Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a signal | Live access is not enabled, the event is not ready, or the URL/key is incorrect. | Confirm channel eligibility and event status in Live Control Room, then re-enter the matching stream URL and key in OBS. |
| Stream health reports instability or the broadcast drops | Insufficient or variable upload capacity, network disruption, or a bitrate target with too little margin. | Test upload bandwidth, reduce the target if needed, account for other network use, and leave approximately 20% headroom. |
| OBS reports encoder overload or the picture stutters | The encoder, output target, or scene may exceed the Mac’s capacity. | Reduce resolution or frame rate, simplify sources and scene effects, and use the appropriate hardware encoder on Apple Silicon or x264 on Intel. |
| Picture works but audio is missing or cuts out | An OBS audio source may be muted, disconnected, or ending unexpectedly. | Check the source and mixer levels in OBS, then test the complete scene through Live Control Room. |
| OBS is connected but the event is not publicly viewable | The event may still need to be started or its visibility/access settings checked. | Review the event status and settings in Live Control Room and test the watch page from another device. |
For prerecorded loops, consider a cloud workflow
If your goal is to repeat uploaded videos rather than produce a live OBS scene, YouTube lists Gyre as a cloud service for 24/7 prerecorded-video streams. That is a different workflow from encoding live scenes on a Mac mini; check the service’s current terms and features directly. YouTube encoder setup guidance
Or let it run in the cloud
For prerecorded videos, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer, OBS, or home connection has to stay on. Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and support from the StreamNeo team. The same product is on every plan; only the billing length changes.
