To make a Botanist work in Schedule I, assign the employee to a suitable bed or locker, assign the plant buildings they should tend, connect a stocked supply storage, and set an output destination on every plant container. Then check that plants have what they need to grow and that the Botanist can reach the buildings.
Set up the Botanist
- Hire and place the employee. The community-maintained Schedule 1 Wiki says Botanists become available from Manny in the Warehouse after Hoodlum V. It lists a $1,000 signing fee plus $100 per existing employee, and a $200 daily wage. Assign the Botanist to a suitable bed or locker on a property with an open employee slot, and leave enough money at that location to cover wages. These figures and mechanics are community-wiki information and may change between game builds.
- Assign the plant buildings. Use the management clipboard to assign the Botanist to the plant containers and other relevant buildings they should work on. The wiki reports a limit of eight assigned buildings, including different plant containers and drying racks. It also says work is prioritized in assignment order, so put the buildings you most want serviced first.
- Assign and stock a supply storage. Connect a supply storage to the Botanist and put the required growing inputs there. Depending on what you are growing, the wiki identifies soil or mushroom substrate, seeds or spawn, and any configured additives as relevant supplies. Do not assume supplies in an unrelated container will be used.
- Configure each plant container. Set the seed or spawn and any desired additives on every container, then choose where its output should go. If a container allows any seed, the wiki says the Botanist picks seeds according to their order in the supply-storage slots; specify the intended seed to avoid an unintended choice. A container without an output destination reportedly will not be harvested by the Botanist.
Make sure the plants can grow
Automation cannot harvest a crop that is not growing. The community growing guide lists soil, seeds, water, and a suitable container as basic requirements. For a pot setup, it specifies a suspension rack and grow light. If a plant runs out of moisture, growth stops. Harvesting can be done manually with trimmers or by a Botanist.
Check access and task load
Leave at least one square of accessible floor space next to each plant building assigned to the Botanist, according to the community wiki. If the employee has several buildings to handle, assignment order matters: the wiki reports that assigned buildings are prioritized in that order, so lower-priority containers may wait while earlier tasks are serviced.
Troubleshoot a Botanist who is not working
- Verify the employee assignment and wages. Confirm the Botanist is assigned to a suitable bed or locker at a property with an available employee slot, and that the location has enough money for the daily wage.
- Confirm the correct buildings are assigned. Check the management clipboard and make sure the relevant plant container is on the Botanist’s task list.
- Check the supply connection. Ensure a supply storage is assigned to the Botanist and contains the required soil or substrate, seeds or spawn, and any intended additives.
- Review every container’s settings. Verify the intended seed or spawn and additives, and set an output destination so the Botanist has somewhere to move the harvest.
- Inspect plant conditions and access. Make sure the plant has water, that a pot has the specified rack and grow light setup, and that accessible floor space remains beside its building.
A Steam community discussion also flags the output destination and a separate supplies shelf as details worth checking. That advice is anecdotal; the community wiki is the source for the workflow described here.

What can change between builds
The detailed Botanist mechanics above are documented by community-maintained Schedule 1 Wiki pages; their publication dates are not stated. The official Steam listing for Schedule I identifies the game as Early Access, gives March 24, 2025 as its release date, and lists Q4 2027 as the planned Early Access departure. The store page says the game will continue to receive substantial monthly content updates for the next few years. Because these are version-sensitive mechanics in a changing game, check the current build if a listed option or behavior differs from what you see in-game.
