Choose a UPS by measuring the PC and network equipment’s real power draw while the lofi stream is running, then check that the UPS supports the load in both watts and VA and provides enough runtime for your goal. Connect only essential equipment to battery-backed outlets. A UPS can bridge a short power interruption or allow a graceful shutdown; it cannot keep a stream live through an extended outage, an ISP failure, or a PC or encoder fault.
What a UPS can—and cannot—do for a 24/7 stream
A UPS supplies battery power when household power fails. For a home-PC YouTube stream, it can prevent a brief interruption from immediately switching off the computer and network gear, and it can provide time for an orderly shutdown. Whether the stream stays online depends on the UPS’s runtime at your actual load and whether the internet connection remains available.
A powered modem and router cannot overcome an ISP outage, and a UPS does not repair a crashed encoder or failed computer. YouTube notes that network disruption can break a live stream; it recommends leaving 20% upload headroom above the stream’s total bitrate. What size UPS do I need for my PC?
Measure the equipment you intend to keep online
Start with the PC’s real power draw while it is encoding, not the wattage printed on individual CPU or GPU components. Add any equipment that must remain powered for the stream to continue:

- The streaming PC.
- The modem and router, if they are separate devices.
- External storage only if the stream depends on it during playback.
- A monitor or peripherals only if someone needs to use them during an outage.
Use a suitable wall-power meter or another trustworthy measurement under the actual streaming workload. The total load is the basis for sizing; without the PC, network gear, and target outage duration, there is no defensible universal UPS size or runtime estimate.
Check both watts and VA, then check runtime
Confirm the combined load is within both the UPS’s watt and VA output limits. APC’s buying guide recommends choosing output watt capacity generally 20–25% above the connected equipment’s draw. That is manufacturer guidance, not a substitute for the selected model’s specifications, its manual, or local electrical requirements. Next, find the runtime chart for the exact UPS model and read the estimate at your measured load. A VA figure alone does not tell you how long the battery will run the PC. Runtime changes with the load and battery condition; adding a monitor or other equipment reduces the time available to the most important devices.
Choose a realistic runtime goal
Decide whether you want to bridge brief power flickers, keep the stream running through a short interruption, or give the PC enough time to shut down safely. A compact desktop UPS should not be assumed to sustain a broadcast through a long outage. Compare the desired duration with the model’s runtime curve, and configure shutdown before the battery is exhausted.

Which UPS features matter for a streaming PC?
- Battery-backed outlet count: Make sure there are enough outlets for the PC and the modem/router if both must stay on. Some models also have surge-only outlets, which can reserve battery power for essential equipment.
- Output waveform: Check compatibility with the PC’s power supply. APC describes pure sine-wave output as offering the highest degree of compatibility for active-PFC servers and sensitive electronics; verify what your exact PC and UPS require.
- Monitoring and shutdown: USB or network monitoring can report power and battery status and may support automatic shutdown. Confirm that the exact UPS model’s software supports your computer’s operating system.
- Battery replacement: Check whether the battery is user-replaceable and identify the approved cartridge for the exact model. Do not substitute a generic battery based only on appearance or connector fit.
- Local fit: Check plug type, voltage, warranty terms, noise, and placement requirements for your region and setup.
Do not connect high-draw, noncritical equipment such as a heater or laser printer to a battery-backed outlet without checking the UPS documentation and capacity.
How to connect and configure the UPS
- List and measure the loads. Measure the PC during the stream and decide whether the monitor, modem/router, and external storage need battery support. Add only the equipment needed for your continuity goal.
- Choose a UPS using its ratings and runtime chart. Confirm the total load fits within both watt and VA limits, then verify the runtime at that load against the exact outage or shutdown duration you want. Follow the UPS manual for local electrical requirements.
- Prepare and connect the unit. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for initial charging, grounding, ventilation, placement, and load limits. Connect the PC and modem/router to battery-backed outlets when both need to remain powered. Put nonessential devices on surge-only outlets, where available; keep the monitor on battery only if someone needs it and runtime allows.
- Set up monitoring and shutdown. Install the manufacturer-supported software if available for your model and operating system. Configure a low-battery or runtime-triggered graceful shutdown with enough time for the operating system and streaming software to close. Decide how the stream should restart after power returns; menus and options vary by model and operating system.
- Test the complete setup safely. Under stable conditions, save work and perform a brief controlled interruption according to the UPS manual. Check that the PC and network gear stay powered, learn how the encoder behaves when power changes, confirm monitoring alerts work, and verify shutdown happens before battery exhaustion. Do not repeatedly deep-discharge the battery for testing.
How long will a UPS run my computer?
There is no reliable answer without the UPS model, measured load, and battery condition. Use the manufacturer’s runtime chart for the exact model at the total load you will actually connect. Do not estimate runtime from the UPS’s VA rating, or assume an estimate for the PC alone includes the modem and router.

Battery condition changes over time. APC says most of its VRLA UPS batteries should last three to five years, subject to temperature, discharge history, and load; this guidance is from an APC FAQ published in 2012 and modified in 2024. Use the compatible replacement part for the specific UPS. APC’s battery-life guidance and APC’s replacement battery selector provide further model-specific information.

Only if the interruption is within the runtime available at your actual load and every necessary part of the connection stays up. The PC, modem, and router may all need battery power, but household power backup does not guarantee that the ISP’s network or YouTube’s connection will continue to work. For a long outage, plan for an orderly shutdown rather than treating the UPS as an unlimited power source.

Maintenance and troubleshooting
Keep the battery and load within the UPS’s limits
- Keep vents clear and operate the UPS within the manufacturer’s environmental range.
- Check self-test results, battery alerts, and runtime estimates periodically.
- Replace a battery with the part specified for the exact UPS model.
- APC advises against frequent runtime calibration; if needed, it says to calibrate one or two times per year at most.
Common symptoms and what to check
- The UPS overload alarm sounds or it switches off under load: Compare the connected equipment’s measured draw against both watt and VA limits. Move nonessential devices off battery-backed outlets or select a UPS sized for the measured load.
- The PC stays on but the stream drops: Check whether the modem/router also had battery power, then check internet availability and YouTube stream health. A UPS cannot prevent a network or ISP interruption.
- The UPS runtime is shorter than expected: Recheck the actual connected load and consult the exact model’s runtime chart. Consider battery age and condition, and heed battery or self-test alerts.
- The PC does not shut down cleanly: Confirm the monitoring connection, supported management software, operating-system compatibility, and shutdown thresholds. Test the configured behavior before relying on it during an outage.
- The stream does not resume after power returns: Check the encoder’s reconnect behavior and your restart procedure. YouTube recommends testing encoder setup and failover rather than assuming recovery.
