The loop flag repeats the input; it does not ensure that FFmpeg restarts after a crash, restore a failed network connection, or keep a YouTube broadcast alive indefinitely. The command below is an illustrative starting point, not a tested Windows recipe.
Check YouTube and music rights first
YouTube says a channel must be verified, must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the person going live must be at least 16. Check that the account can start a stream before configuring the server: YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
Use audio and video that you own or are licensed to stream on YouTube continuously. A license to listen to or download a track does not necessarily grant permission to rebroadcast it in a 24/7 livestream. The applicable rights depend on the track, territory, and license terms; verify those terms rather than assuming a music provider’s general license covers continuous livestreaming.
Create the YouTube encoder stream
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. YouTube’s setup guidance is at Set up a live stream with an encoder.
- Find the stream’s ingest URL and stream key in its stream settings. Use the RTMPS endpoint shown there when available. Do not assume an RTMP URL is encrypted.
- Keep the stream key private: YouTube describes stream keys as “your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not put a real key in a public script, screenshot, or article. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
The key and ingest URL are separate connection details. FFmpeg sends the output to the endpoint using the key in the format expected by the selected YouTube ingest configuration. Follow the endpoint format shown in your own Live Control Room; do not copy a placeholder or another channel’s URL.

Prepare a file and configure FFmpeg
Install an FFmpeg build that includes the protocols and codecs you intend to use, and confirm that the server can read the media file. FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 as infinite input looping. The loop option belongs with the input; output encoding options go before the output URL.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "C:medialoop.mp4" [encoding/output options] "<YouTube ingest URL>/<stream key>"This is a command pattern, not a tested Windows command. Replace the placeholders with the actual endpoint and key format from Live Control Room, and supply output options that match the media and YouTube ingest protocol. Do not paste a real stream key into a shared document or public command example.

Choose output settings for the actual media
Resolution, frame rate, codecs, and bitrate should reflect the file and intended presentation. For H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps, YouTube Help lists a recommended video bitrate of 5 Mbps. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval, with keyframes no more than 4 seconds apart. Those figures are not universal: other resolutions, frame rates, and codecs have different recommendations. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
For a music stream built around a still image or a visual loop, decide whether the source should be encoded as video or sent as audio-only. The appropriate output format and settings differ. Confirm that the selected codecs and container are supported by your FFmpeg build and the chosen YouTube ingest protocol; the example command deliberately leaves these choices open.

Use RTMPS and check available upload bandwidth
YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP sent over TLS/SSL and recommends it for encrypted transport. Select the RTMPS ingest URL shown in Live Control Room when available; encryption is determined by the endpoint you connect to, not by the fact that the stream is going to YouTube. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.
YouTube recommends at least 20% upload bandwidth headroom beyond the combined bitrate of the primary and any backup stream. For example, a primary stream at 5 Mbps with no backup needs more than 6 Mbps of available upload capacity under that recommendation. If a backup stream is also configured, include its bitrate in the combined total. Other traffic on the server or network can reduce the capacity actually available to the encoder.

Test the stream and monitor it while live
- Start FFmpeg and wait for YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and health indicators to show an incoming stream.
- Check the preview, audio, image, and stream health before starting or announcing the live broadcast. YouTube recommends previewing and monitoring stream quality; see its encoder setup guidance.
- Keep monitoring the stream and the Windows Server process. A successful initial connection does not establish that the file will remain readable, the process will remain running, or the network will stay available.
Plan for disconnects, process failures, and replays
Infinite input looping and failure recovery are different problems. If FFmpeg exits, -stream_loop -1 does not relaunch it. A server restart, a network outage, an encoder disconnect, and YouTube’s broadcast state are also separate points of failure. The available documentation does not establish a Windows Server service, Task Scheduler, power-management, or watchdog configuration that can be presented as a reliable, complete recipe.
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documentation includes an RTMP output example using -f fifo, -fifo_format flv, -attempt_recovery 1, and -recovery_wait_time 1. This is a building block for attempting recovery from temporary output failures, not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming and not a replacement for process supervision or monitoring. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a broadcast that runs for 24 hours will be saved as a single replay. If a replay matters, plan a stream duration and rotation approach around YouTube’s archiving limits and confirm the current behavior in YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.
Troubleshoot common problems
- YouTube shows no incoming stream: Check that FFmpeg is still running, that the endpoint and key match the current Live Control Room stream, and that the server can reach the selected RTMP or RTMPS endpoint. Reset and replace the key if you suspect it was exposed.
- The connection drops or stream health degrades: Check server and network stability, available upload capacity, and the recommended headroom beyond primary and backup bitrate. Review FFmpeg output and YouTube’s stream-health display; a loop option does not recover every failure.
- The video or audio is rejected or malformed: Confirm the selected codecs, container, and output settings are compatible with your installed FFmpeg build and the ingest protocol. Match settings to the source and consult YouTube’s encoder recommendations rather than treating one bitrate as universal.
- The stream stops when the file ends: Verify that
-stream_loop -1is placed before the input it applies to, and that the input remains accessible. The flag repeats an input; it does not restart FFmpeg after the process exits. - The stream is online but a replay is missing or split: Check stream duration and YouTube’s archive behavior. YouTube’s stated automatic archiving applies to streams under 12 hours, not a promise of one replay for a longer continuous broadcast.
