A Raspberry Pi stream stopping after several hours does not point to one specific fault. First identify whether the Pi or encoder stopped, the outbound connection failed, or YouTube stopped receiving a healthy feed. YouTube’s Live Control Room diagnostics and the encoder’s logs are more useful than replacing parts at random.
Find out what stopped first
Before changing settings, note the failure time and collect the information that can identify where the stream broke: YouTube’s reported stream errors, encoder output, process exit status, relevant system logs, and whether the Pi’s network connection remained available. A Raspberry Pi forum user reported a stream ending at seemingly random intervals; that is an individual account, not evidence that one cause explains other cases.
1. Check YouTube Live Control Room
Look for errors or warnings in the stream’s diagnostics around the time viewers lost the feed. Ask whether viewers on different internet connections saw the same problem. YouTube says encoder issues are more likely when viewers on different connections report trouble; if affected viewers share a network, that network may be the problem. This is a clue, not a definitive diagnosis. See YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance.
2. Check the encoder, source, and local recording
Confirm that the encoder is still running and check its error output, version, and CPU load. If you record a local archive, inspect it near the failure point. A source or archive that is also broken points upstream of YouTube; if the source and local recording look healthy while the live feed does not, investigate the outbound connection and ingest path. YouTube recommends checking encoder software, stream quality, CPU load, local recording, and outbound connectivity when troubleshooting third-party encoders.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. Establish whether the process exited or the feed stalled
Record the process exit status and review FFmpeg output and system logs around the exact time the stream stopped. Look for disconnects, output errors, queue-overflow messages, or indications that sending fell behind real time. A Raspberry Pi forum participant attributed one FFmpeg/YouTube interruption to queue overflow and suggested FIFO recovery; treat that report as a lead to verify in your own logs, not a general explanation.
4. Watch for latency growth
If the stream gradually falls behind before buffering or stopping, note when the delay starts and whether it continues to grow. One report about a custom rpicam-vid stream described accumulating latency. That makes growing delay worth investigating, but does not establish that it causes other Pi streams to fail.

5. Check power only when there is evidence
Look in kernel logs for low-voltage warnings and account for the exact Pi model, power supply, cable, and attached peripherals. Raspberry Pi advises using a higher-quality supply and cable if low-voltage warnings appear; a power change is not a universal fix for a stream that stops. Its current online hardware documentation, accessed in 2026, recommends different supplies by model:
| Raspberry Pi model | Supply recommendation |
|---|---|
| Raspberry Pi 5 | 27 W USB-C |
| Raspberry Pi 4 and Raspberry Pi 400 | 3 A USB-C |
| Raspberry Pi 1–3 | 2.5 A micro USB |
These are Raspberry Pi recommendations, not measurements of your device’s power use or proof that it is underpowered. Cable voltage loss and peripheral demand matter too. Raspberry Pi warns: “Low quality power supplies can corrupt storage or cause unpredictable behaviour within the Raspberry Pi.” See its power-supply documentation. Consider a model-compatible supply and suitable cable only if the evidence points to power.

Match the fix to the failure
If logs show low voltage
Use a supply that meets Raspberry Pi’s recommendation for your model, and check the cable and connected devices. Recheck the logs after the change. If there are no low-voltage warnings, do not assume a new supply will solve an unrelated encoder or network fault.
If the encoder or source fails
Update the encoder to its latest available version, inspect its errors and CPU load, and test the local source or archive. Try a different encoder only when the evidence suggests a fault specific to the current encoder. If the source itself fails, changing YouTube output or retry behavior will not repair it.

If outbound connectivity drops
Test the Pi’s outbound internet connection and look for interruptions or throughput that cannot be sustained reliably. YouTube specifically recommends checking outbound connectivity when the encoder stream looks and sounds healthy. A speed test taken at another time does not establish that the connection stayed stable during the failure.
If FFmpeg output has transient failures
FFmpeg’s FIFO pseudo-muxer includes recovery options for output failures. It may help when logs identify a transient output problem, but retries cannot fix persistent network loss, inadequate CPU capacity, power instability, or a broken source. Check the documentation for the FFmpeg version installed before configuring it; available options and behavior can depend on version. See FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documentation.

If the camera pipeline or format is incompatible
Review the capture-to-ingest path end to end, including video format, encapsulation, audio, and output protocol. Raspberry Pi documents rpicam-vid network streaming over UDP and TCP, MPEG-2 Transport Stream for broader downstream compatibility, audio through compatible formats, and third-party server options. These camera-networking examples are not a universal YouTube RTMP command. Match the pipeline to your Pi model, capture software, encoder, audio setup, and the protocol expected by the actual ingest path. See Raspberry Pi’s camera networking documentation.
Use a repeatable troubleshooting pass
- Capture the failure: record the timestamp, Live Control Room diagnostics, encoder output, process exit status, and system logs.
- Separate source from delivery: inspect a local recording if available and confirm whether the Pi process is still running.
- Check the relevant subsystem: use CPU and encoder errors for a processing fault, network continuity for an outbound fault, and kernel low-voltage warnings for a power issue.
- Change one thing at a time: choose a fix supported by the logs, then watch for the same symptom and compare diagnostics.
- Validate recovery: confirm that viewers receive the stream again and that the source, audio, and latency remain acceptable.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream of uploaded videos rather than a live camera feed, StreamNeo is an alternative to keeping a Pi and home connection running. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it streams each upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or its plans. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
