You can use Docker to run FFmpeg on a Raspberry Pi and send a live video feed to YouTube, but the exact setup depends on the Pi model, operating-system architecture, input device and whether FFmpeg must encode the video. There is no reliable one-size-fits-all camera container recipe. First confirm that Docker supports your Pi, get the source working on the host, then configure and validate the container and FFmpeg against YouTube’s ingest requirements.
What you need to decide before installing anything
Docker manages the FFmpeg runtime; it does not make a camera or media source automatically available inside a container. The capture method, device access, FFmpeg build and Pi architecture all matter. Raspberry Pi’s documentation and camera documentation describe the platform and camera workflows, while FFmpeg’s command documentation and device documentation explain its inputs and options.
- Record the exact Raspberry Pi model and whether Raspberry Pi OS is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Identify the input: a Raspberry Pi camera, USB/UVC camera, media file, or another feed. Note whether it includes audio.
- Determine whether the source is already encoded in a YouTube-compatible format or needs transcoding. Copying an existing encoded stream may avoid encoding work, but is suitable only when its format and container meet the output requirements.
- Choose a resolution and frame rate based on the source and the Pi’s demonstrated capacity. YouTube’s bitrate figures are ingest recommendations, not proof that a particular Pi can encode them.
Do not choose a board or camera on the assumption that a particular resolution or frame rate will work: no specific model, camera, image, or end-to-end configuration is established here.
Check Docker support for your Pi
Before installing Docker, check the current Docker Engine instructions for Raspberry Pi OS. Docker’s guidance covers 32-bit armhf; 64-bit ARM users are directed to Debian arm64 package instructions. Docker says Engine v28 is the final major release supporting Raspberry Pi OS 32-bit armhf. Its official packages do not support ARMv6 devices such as the Pi 1 or original Pi Zero and Zero W. These are support and compatibility limits, not performance guidance; verify the current documentation for your model and OS before proceeding.

Select a container image only after confirming it supports the Pi’s CPU architecture and includes an FFmpeg build with the input device and output protocol you need. The source material does not validate a particular image or Compose file, so treat image choice and container setup as configuration-specific rather than copying an unverified generic recipe.
Get the video source working on the host first
For a camera
Follow Raspberry Pi’s current camera guidance for your model and OS, and verify capture on the host before introducing Docker. A working camera on the host does not guarantee that a container can access it: the required camera stack, device mappings and permissions depend on the capture method. Establish those requirements for your chosen camera workflow rather than guessing at container privileges or device paths.

For a media file or other feed
Verify that the source is readable and identify its video and audio formats. Check whether it already meets the required output format. FFmpeg’s available inputs, devices and options depend on how the binary was built; consult its device documentation and general documentation for the selected build.
Configure YouTube Live before starting FFmpeg
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to use.
- Copy the stream key from the control room into your encoder configuration. Treat it as a password: keep it private, do not put a real key in a public repository, container image or shared log, and use a placeholder in examples.
- Use YouTube’s recommended RTMPS ingest where available. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance explains the secure protocol and stream-key setup. The YouTube Live Streaming API documentation provides ingestion-address context.
- Choose encoding settings using YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions guidance, and confirm the selected mode works with your source and Pi.
Set FFmpeg output to YouTube’s ingest recommendations
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; it recommends not exceeding four seconds. Its H.264 bitrate recommendations include:

| Output mode | YouTube recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not tested Raspberry Pi encoding capabilities. The guidance supports up to 60 fps; match the output to the actual source and what the hardware can sustain. Use the current YouTube settings page for other resolutions or changes to its recommendations.
Configure FFmpeg’s input, video and audio handling, output container, and RTMPS destination for your specific source. If the source is already suitably encoded, stream copy may be an option; otherwise encoding is required. The right command and whether software or hardware encoding is available depend on the FFmpeg build, input and Pi. No single command can be responsibly presented as universal for the unspecified camera and hardware in this setup.

Run FFmpeg in Docker and validate the actual stream
- Use an architecture-compatible image with the FFmpeg features your input and output require.
- Pass through only the device access and permissions required by your validated capture method. Camera-specific container mappings are not established for every Pi camera setup.
- Provide the stream key through private runtime configuration or another secret-handling method; never bake the real key into an image or publish it in a command transcript.
- Start the container and inspect FFmpeg’s output for input-open errors, encoder errors, connection failures and sustained output.
- Watch the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and check stream health using the actual Pi, camera or media source, network and settings. Change one relevant variable at a time if the feed fails or degrades.
Troubleshoot common setup failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Docker cannot install or the image will not run | The OS architecture or Pi generation is not supported by the selected Docker package or image. | Confirm the exact Pi model and 32-bit or 64-bit OS, then check Docker’s current Raspberry Pi OS support guidance and the image’s architecture support. |
| FFmpeg cannot open the camera or input | The source was not working on the host, the container lacks required device access, or the FFmpeg build lacks the needed input support. | Test capture on the host first; then verify the capture method’s device and permission requirements and the container’s FFmpeg build. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | The ingest destination, stream key, protocol or output configuration is wrong. | Recheck the destination and private key against Live Control Room, prefer RTMPS, and inspect FFmpeg’s connection output. |
| Stream health is poor or output is unstable | The selected encoding workload, bitrate, frame rate, input or network may not suit the actual setup. | Compare the output with YouTube’s current ingest recommendations, verify the input and encoder settings, and validate sustained operation on the hardware rather than assuming the recommended bitrate is achievable by the Pi. |
| Video arrives without audio | The source has no audio, the input does not expose it as expected, or FFmpeg’s selected audio handling is incompatible. | Confirm the source’s audio presence and format, then inspect the input and audio configuration in FFmpeg. |
