For watching a YouTube Live stream on a TV around the clock, start with a supported Android TV or Google TV device. It is usually the simpler TV-style playback option, but “Android TV box” alone does not guarantee YouTube support. A Raspberry Pi offers more control and can play media, but continuous YouTube playback through a browser needs testing on the exact model and software. Neither device is proven to deliver uninterrupted 24/7 viewing; test its playback and recovery behavior before relying on it.
This comparison is about receiving and displaying someone else’s live stream—not broadcasting your own feed to YouTube. Those are different jobs, and an Android TV box is primarily a playback device.
Which device should you choose?
- Choose Android TV or Google TV for the simpler TV experience. YouTube lists selected televisions with Android TV built in and NVIDIA Shield among supported TV/device choices. Check the exact model; the label “Android TV box” is not proof that YouTube supports it.
- Choose Raspberry Pi if you want a configurable small computer. You will need to select the OS and playback path, configure startup and idle behavior, and test the YouTube stream itself.
- Choose neither on the assumption that it is guaranteed to run uninterrupted. The cited guidance does not establish 24/7 reliability for either option, and there is no cited head-to-head endurance result.
If your goal is to transmit a live feed to YouTube rather than watch one, this is the wrong hardware comparison: the Pi could be part of an encoding setup, while an Android TV box is generally intended for playback.

Check the actual YouTube playback path
Android TV and Google TV
Confirm that YouTube supports the exact model you plan to use. Support for selected Android TV televisions and NVIDIA Shield should not be generalized to every device marketed as an Android TV box. Also check whether its YouTube app can play the particular live stream, at the desired quality, on your network.

Raspberry Pi
Raspberry Pi OS documentation describes VLC as preinstalled on the full OS, with hardware acceleration and support for popular audio and video formats. It also documents command-line and GUI-free playback; Raspberry Pi OS Lite requires installing VLC packages separately. These capabilities establish a Pi media-player path, not reliable, continuous playback of YouTube in Chromium or another browser.
Historical Raspberry Pi engineer comments from October 2023 provide limited context, not a guarantee: one engineer said a Pi 5 played 1080p60 in his test, while another noted that 4K YouTube browser playback could be affected by codec and browser overhead. The result depends on the codec and playback path, and those remarks do not establish how a current setup will perform unattended.

Plan power, network, and idle behavior
Raspberry Pi power and storage
Use the supply specified for your board. Raspberry Pi’s current setup documentation specifies 5 V at 5 A and a 27 W USB-C supply for Raspberry Pi 5, and 5 V at 3 A for Raspberry Pi 4 Model B. The cited Raspberry Pi getting-started guidance recommends a microSD card of at least 32 GB. These are model- and documentation-specific requirements; check the current guidance for your exact board rather than applying Pi 5 power advice to another model.
Android TV idle settings
Android TV developer guidance says Ambient Mode is entered after 10 minutes of user inactivity; Energy Saver follows after an additional period determined by the device’s Energy Saver setting. Active video playback may prevent Ambient Mode, but an app should not suppress it when playback is stopped or paused. The exact retail device, vendor customizations, and settings matter. Test what happens when the stream pauses or stalls, not just during uninterrupted playback.

Network capacity
YouTube troubleshooting guidance recommends at least 7 Mbps for HD streaming. Treat this as guidance, not a guarantee of stable playback. Resolution and bitrate, other household traffic, Wi-Fi interference, and network congestion can all affect the result. Test on the network and screen you intend to use; if buffering occurs, investigate the connection and interference before buying networking hardware.
Set up and test before leaving it unattended
- Identify the exact hardware. For Android TV, check the model against YouTube’s supported-device information. For Raspberry Pi, choose the board and OS, then verify that its power supply matches that model.
- Establish a working playback path. Open the desired YouTube Live stream on the Android device, or configure the Pi browser or player and test that same stream at the quality you intend to watch.
- Configure the display and idle behavior. Check screen, Ambient Mode, Energy Saver, and sleep settings on Android TV. On a Pi, configure the OS, browser or player, and screen or power settings so they suit unattended playback.
- Run a real-world trial. Use the intended display and network. Include an idle period, a network interruption, and a device restart. Check whether playback resumes and whether the device returns to the stream after power or network is restored.
- Make a recovery plan. Find out whether the app or player relaunches after a stall, and whether you can restart the device remotely. Recovery behavior is device- and setup-specific; do not assume it will happen automatically.
Common problems and what to check
- The YouTube app is missing or unsupported. Verify support for the precise Android TV model. The category name alone does not establish app compatibility.
- The stream buffers or drops quality. Check the connection, household traffic, Wi-Fi interference, and software. YouTube’s 7 Mbps HD recommendation is not a stability guarantee.
- The stream stops after the screen has been idle. Check the device’s screensaver, Ambient Mode, Energy Saver, and sleep settings. On a Pi, review the OS and player’s screen and power behavior.
- Playback does not resume after an interruption. Reopen or restart the app or device, then check software updates and the network. YouTube troubleshooting recommends connection and software checks and restarting the app or device; the specific automatic-resume behavior depends on your hardware and software.
- A Pi plays local media but not the YouTube stream well. VLC’s documented local-media capabilities do not prove that a browser-based YouTube Live path will work at the same quality. Test the actual stream, browser or player, and board combination.
Watching a stream is different from keeping your own channel live
