You can run a 24/7 sleep sounds YouTube stream from a spare PC by sending a prebuilt audio-and-video feed through an encoder to YouTube Live, then preventing the computer from sleeping and planning how to recover from interruptions. First confirm your channel is eligible, configure the stream key and encoder, and test the whole setup before relying on it overnight.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming: YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.
- A spare PC that can run an encoder continuously, with a stable internet connection and enough available upload bandwidth for the selected stream settings.
- A recording or playlist you have the rights to use, plus encoder software that can send a live feed to YouTube.
This setup streams whatever the encoder outputs; it does not make an ordinary video upload into a live broadcast by itself. For sleep sounds, prepare a continuous audio-and-visual source in the encoder, such as a looped recording or playlist, and confirm that it continues playing after the first item ends.
Set up the YouTube Live stream
- Check eligibility. Verify the channel and confirm it has no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. If Live Control Room does not let you create a stream, resolve the eligibility issue before configuring the PC.
- Create or schedule an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream using the encoder workflow. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the process.
- Copy the server URL and stream key. Enter these into the encoder’s YouTube or custom RTMP destination fields. The key routes the encoder feed to the right stream; treat it like a password. You can reuse a custom key through YouTube’s stream settings if that suits your setup. Reset it if you believe it has been exposed.
Do not share screenshots or configuration files that reveal the key. Anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to the associated stream.
Configure the encoder for a stable sleep stream
In the encoder, select the YouTube server URL and key, then choose a resolution, frame rate and bitrate that both the PC and its measured upload connection can sustain. YouTube’s encoder settings guide lists supported formats and quality recommendations. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube supports H.264, H.265 or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio.

- Rate control: choose constant bitrate (CBR), which YouTube recommends for these encoder settings.
- Keyframe interval: set 2 seconds; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Bitrate and resolution: avoid choosing a bitrate just because it is a common preset. Higher output settings require more upload capacity and may increase PC workload. Use YouTube’s guidance for the selected resolution and frame rate, then test the actual connection and encoder load.
- Audio and loop: check that the sleep audio is audible, does not clip, and restarts or transitions as intended. Watch through at least one playlist transition before leaving the system unattended.
For a mostly static sleep-sounds stream, the visual may be simple, but it is still part of the live encoder output. Confirm that it does not freeze or disappear when the audio source changes.
Test the stream before leaving it unattended
- Start the encoder well before the time you need the stream to be live. If appropriate, make a test stream unlisted.
- Open the stream’s preview in Live Control Room. Confirm that video appears, the audio is present, and the stream reaches YouTube successfully.
- Check the stream health indicators and listen to the public watch page from a separate device or browser. YouTube recommends checking preview, stream health and audio/video quality in its live streaming tips.
- Let the test run long enough to expose playlist transitions, encoder load or network instability. A successful start alone does not establish that a full overnight session will remain healthy.
Keep the spare PC running overnight
Prevent sleep and hibernation
Change the operating system’s power settings so the PC does not enter sleep or hibernation while the stream is meant to run. The exact menu names depend on the operating system and version, so verify the current settings on that machine. Also check any separate setting that turns off the display: the screen can usually turn off without stopping the stream, but the computer itself must stay awake.

Plan for restarts and failures
Decide what should happen after an encoder crash, PC restart or power loss. Check the encoder’s reconnect behavior and configure any operating-system startup or restart method you intend to rely on; do not assume it will relaunch and resume correctly without testing. YouTube advises monitoring during a live event, but that is not the same as guaranteeing unattended recovery.
Reduce avoidable network problems
YouTube recommends having about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the total stream bitrate; include primary and backup bitrates when both are being sent. Its streaming tips also note that network interruptions can break a stream. For a stationary PC, a wired Ethernet connection is a reasonable option to reduce dependence on Wi-Fi, though it cannot prevent an ISP or power outage.

Mind heat and power continuity
Place the PC where it has ventilation and can run without obstructed air intakes. If you consider backup power, remember that a UPS can support connected equipment for a limited time but does not preserve an internet connection if the modem, router or provider also goes down.
Understand YouTube’s archive limit for long broadcasts
YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will be archived in full. If retaining a complete recording matters, check YouTube’s current behavior for your stream and plan around the stated under-12-hour boundary rather than assuming the entire continuous broadcast will be saved. Troubleshooting: when the stream stops or looks wrong
