The best podcast interview questions give a guest room to tell a specific story, explain a decision, or reflect on what they learned. Prepare around the insight your episode should uncover, tailor prompts to the guest’s actual work, and treat your question list as a flexible outline—not a script or quota.

Start with the story your episode should uncover

Before writing questions, decide what you want listeners to understand by the end of the conversation. Is the episode about how a creator made a difficult choice, developed a process, changed direction, or learned from a failed attempt? A clear focus helps you select questions that build toward something instead of collecting disconnected biography facts.

The University of Illinois Springfield’s interview guidance recommends preparing around the story or insight you want to uncover. Spotify for Creators likewise notes that questions can be shaped around a show’s central concept: Spotify for Creators’ guide to podcast interview questions. Use that premise to decide which details matter and which tempting side topics can wait.

Build a flexible question arc

This sequence is an adaptable template, not a required formula. Replace its broad wording with details from the guest’s work and your episode’s focus. The University of Illinois Springfield guide supports preparing around a central story; the prompts below are practical applications of that approach.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Context: “What were you trying to make or change when this work began?”
  2. Origin: “Can you take us back to the moment this idea first became real for you?”
  3. Specific story: “What happened the first time you tried that approach?”
  4. Decision or turning point: “What changed your mind, and what did you do next?”
  5. Process: “How do you make that work in practice, step by step?”
  6. Lesson: “What do you understand now that you did not understand at the beginning?”
  7. Useful close: “What is one question you wish people would ask you about this work?”

The arc moves from context to a concrete moment, then toward explanation and reflection. You may not need every stage, and the guest may cover several of them in a single answer.

Write open-ended questions that do not supply the answer

Questions beginning with “what,” “why,” or “how” often invite explanation or a story, unlike a prompt that can be answered with a simple yes or no. More important, avoid assuming what the guest felt, intended, or learned. Ask for their account rather than embedding your interpretation in the question.

Spotify for Creators’ March 31, 2022 guide attributes this example to Hannah Berner, host of Berning in Hell. She describes replacing an assumption about how a guest felt with an open question: “When I first started, I would sometimes ask questions that would answer the question for them, like ‘So when your parents did that to you, it made you feel alone?’ Instead, now I would ask a more open-ended question, like, ‘So when your parents did that to you, how did that make you feel about yourself?’” The point is not to use that exact wording, but to leave room for an answer the host did not anticipate.

Leading prompt More open prompt Why the revision helps
“That launch must have been terrifying, right?” “What was going through your mind as the launch approached?” It asks the guest to describe their own response instead of confirming the host’s assumption.
“You always knew you wanted to be a creator, didn’t you?” “When did making this kind of work first become a serious possibility for you?” It allows for uncertainty, a change of direction, or an unexpected beginning.
“Your new workflow is much better, isn’t it?” “What changed when you moved to this workflow?” It asks for a specific account without declaring the result in advance.

The examples in this table are illustrative prompts, not quotations from a source. The useful editing test is simple: could a guest reasonably disagree with the assumption hidden in your question? If so, revise it to ask what happened or how they saw it.

Tailor questions to the guest and the show

Generic prompts such as “Tell me about yourself” can open a conversation, but they rarely make a whole interview distinctive. Research the guest’s work and connect your questions to a particular project, choice, event, or turning point. A specific reference shows why this guest is right for this episode and gives them a concrete place to begin.

  • Anchor the prompt: Refer to a project, decision, or moment relevant to the episode rather than asking only for a career overview.
  • Ask about action: “What did you try first?” or “What did you do after that?” can draw out a sequence listeners can follow.
  • Invite the guest’s perspective: Ask what surprised them, what they would change, or how their understanding developed.
  • Keep the show’s premise in view: A question should serve the episode’s central idea, not just prove that you have read the guest’s biography.

These are applications of the preparation principles in the University of Illinois Springfield guide and Spotify for Creators’ advice to shape questions around the show concept and guest.

Prepare notes, then listen instead of following a script

Write enough questions to give the conversation direction, but do not make finishing the list your goal. Riverside advises that hosts need not read every question word for word, ask them in order, or cover all of them. Its guidance is practical: follow a useful answer with a relevant question, and skip a prompt the guest has already answered. See Riverside’s podcast interview questions guide.

  • Mark the few questions that are essential to the episode’s main story.
  • Keep optional follow-ups nearby, but do not force them into the conversation.
  • Listen for a detail, tension, or unanswered point in the guest’s response.
  • Ask a follow-up that clarifies the answer, requests an example, or explores what happened next.
  • Skip or reword a question if the guest has already answered it.

A prepared outline gives you somewhere to return if the conversation wanders. Listening lets you notice when the guest has opened a more useful path.

How many questions should you prepare?

There is no universal question count established by the guidance cited here. The American Psychological Association says podcast interviews are usually longer than television and radio interviews, often lasting half an hour to an hour; that is a qualitative description, not a measured industry average or a prescribed format. A longer conversation can leave room for depth, but it does not mean you need to fill every minute with a new question. See the APA’s discussion of podcasts.

Prepare enough prompts to support the episode’s story, including a few follow-ups for likely answers. Then let the guest’s responses—not a target number—determine how many you use.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your creator podcast also has a YouTube channel that should stay live with uploaded video, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube stream running from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
