The counter alone does not show which part of that route is failing, and it does not mean the fireplace video or OBS installation is at fault.
What OBS means by dropped frames
OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, published September 30, 2024, describes dropped frames as a connection problem: “Dropped frames means that your connection to remote server isn’t stable or you can’t keep up with your set bitrate.” The remote server is the streaming service’s ingest endpoint—such as YouTube’s—not a server operated by OBS. OBS’s Help Portal explains, “There are no OBS servers – the connection goes directly from your computer to the streaming service,” and says OBS drops frames to avoid buffering and keep the stream playing.
On a stream that runs continuously, the connection has to remain stable over time. But the official OBS material reviewed does not identify a special cause for fireplace streams or publish a dropped-frame rate for 24/7 broadcasts. Diagnose the actual connection and performance indicators rather than assuming the content or schedule is the cause.
First distinguish a connection problem from an encoding problem
Check which indicator is actually appearing before changing settings. OBS’s Help Portal explains dropped frames; its separate Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide, dated June 12, 2021, covers rendering and encoding performance. Its advice remains useful for the distinction, though labels may differ in your installed OBS version.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| What you see | What it points to | Where to troubleshoot |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped-frames counter rising or a yellow/red connection indicator | The connection to the ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. | Upload capacity, route, ingest server, local network, and network software. |
| “Encoding overloaded” or choppy output accompanied by performance trouble | OBS may not be able to render or encode the scene fast enough; GPU or system workload can be involved. | Output resolution or frame rate, scene complexity, and competing GPU use. |
| Viewers report buffering | Viewer playback can depend on their device and connection, as well as platform transcoding options. | Check playback conditions separately; buffering does not by itself prove OBS is dropping frames. |
A rising dropped-frames counter alone is not evidence of encoding overload. Likewise, an encoding warning is not proof that your network is dropping frames.
Troubleshoot dropped frames in a useful order
1. Confirm and record the symptom
In OBS, note whether the dropped-frames counter increases and whether the connection indicator turns yellow or red. Record timestamps, disconnections, and whether the problem happens continuously or in bursts. If the message is instead “Encoding overloaded” or the output is choppy without a connection warning, use the performance branch below.

2. Match bitrate to sustained upload capacity
OBS recommends lowering the video bitrate to suit your upload speed and the streaming platform’s limits. Its guide gives 75% of total upload speed as a good starting point—not a guarantee. A speed-test result is not necessarily the upload capacity your connection can sustain continuously, and the appropriate bitrate limit depends on the platform, geography, and current network conditions. Reduce bitrate cautiously, then watch whether the counter continues to rise; lower bitrate can reduce stream quality.
3. Test a different ingest server or route
Try another ingest server offered by your streaming platform. If useful, briefly test another streaming service to see whether the problem appears specific to one service; that comparison will not fix a fault isolated to the original service. For Twitch users on Windows, OBS’s guide points to TwitchTest to compare server quality.

4. Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet
If the computer is on Wi-Fi, test with a wired connection. OBS notes that Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming and recommends wired networking. Ethernet is a diagnostic as well as a possible lasting improvement, but it cannot correct congestion at your ISP or a poor route farther upstream. Do not replace equipment simply because the counter rises; first use the test to narrow down where the problem may be.
5. Check software, drivers, and network hardware
OBS lists several possible contributors: firewall or antivirus interference, VPNs, network-prioritization utilities, outdated network drivers, modem or router issues, and faulty cables, network cards, switches, or extenders. Change one thing at a time where practical so you can tell whether it affects the problem. If temporarily disabling security software is necessary for diagnosis, restore it afterward and add an OBS exception if indicated.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
6. Test OBS network options cautiously
On Windows, OBS lists Network Optimizations and TCP pacing as options some users report can help. It also advises setting Bind to IP to Default. IPv4 Only can be tested, but return to the default IPv4/IPv6 setting if it makes no difference. Dynamic Bitrate is identified as a Beta option in the OBS guide: it can lower bitrate during congestion, but it does not remove the underlying cause and may reduce stream quality.
7. Contact your ISP with a useful record
If the drops persist, OBS recommends contacting your internet service provider. Congestion or route-side changes may be beyond your control. Keep OBS logs and the timestamps you recorded so you can describe when the problem occurs rather than reporting only that the stream looks unstable.

If OBS reports encoding or rendering overload instead
Use this branch only when performance indicators point to rendering or encoding trouble; lowering bitrate is not the default fix for a network-only dropped-frames counter. OBS’s performance guidance recommends reducing output resolution or frame rate, simplifying scenes or sources, and checking for competing GPU use. If 60 fps is more than your system can handle, reducing to 30 fps can reduce the workload. Check the current labels in your installed OBS version because the guide is dated June 2021.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the problem is having a home computer and connection run a YouTube broadcast continuously, StreamNeo offers a different setup: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer does not have to stay on. This is for uploaded video, not a live camera feed, and it streams to YouTube only.
