A Raspberry Pi can run a continuous playlist stream to YouTube Live, but it cannot make music copyright-safe. To reduce the risk of a claim or interruption, get permission that explicitly covers your livestream and any archive, and ask the rights holder to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Then configure and test the Pi-based audio-and-video workflow before leaving it running.
Can I stream a playlist from a Raspberry Pi to YouTube Live?
Yes. In this setup, the Pi runs an encoder that combines playlist audio with a visual source and sends the resulting live feed to YouTube. YouTube Studio supplies the live-stream configuration, including the stream key. The Pi handles the local playback and encoding; YouTube receives the feed.
A continuous stream also depends on the Pi staying powered, connected to the network, and running its playback and encoder software. Raspberry Pi’s setup guidance covers boot media, power, and headless operation, but it does not establish which Pi model or encoder settings can sustain a particular 24/7 workload. Test your chosen configuration over an extended period before relying on it.
How do I avoid copyright claims on a live music stream?
Use only music you have the rights to rebroadcast in the exact way you plan to use it. YouTube Help says that “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A match can cause YouTube to replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it.

Get permission for the stream and any archive
Ask the rights holder for written confirmation that your permission covers continuous YouTube livestreaming, the relevant territories, any commercial use, and an archived recording if you plan to keep one. Confirm that the permission applies to repeat playback in a 24/7 stream; ordinary permission to listen to or use a track does not, by itself, establish a right to rebroadcast it.
Ask about Content ID allowlisting
A license alone may not prevent a live interruption. YouTube Help warns: “If your channel isn’t added to their allowlist, your live stream can be interrupted even if you’ve licensed the third-party content.” Ask the relevant rights holder whether they can add your channel to its Content ID allowlist, and verify that the permission and allowlisting cover every track in the playlist.

Distinguish a live interruption from an archive claim
If you choose to archive a live stream, YouTube says Content ID claims on that archived video are made after the live stream ends. That timing does not prevent a live interruption or resolve whether you have the rights to keep the archive. Check archive permission separately.
Evaluate music sources track by track
YouTube Creator Music includes some tracks with no-cost licenses and some that use revenue sharing when requirements are met. The help information describes access for eligible creators in the YouTube Partner Program in the United States, with expansion outside the U.S. pending. It does not establish blanket permission for continuous livestream use. Review each track’s terms and get confirmation from the rights holder that your specific live and archive use is covered.

- Does the license explicitly cover livestreaming, repeated playback, and any archive?
- Are the territories and commercial-use terms compatible with your channel?
- Can the rights holder allowlist your channel in Content ID?
- Do the terms permit a 24/7 repeating playlist rather than only a conventional video?
A purchased song, music subscription, credit, noncommercial use, or private or unlisted stream does not automatically establish permission to rebroadcast music. If a rights holder cannot confirm the necessary rights, leave that track out.
What you need for a Raspberry Pi setup
- A Pi and model-matched power supply: Use a supply appropriate for your specific Raspberry Pi model. The official setup guidance lists different power requirements by model; it does not identify one model as the minimum or best choice for a particular 24/7 encoding workload.
- Boot media: Raspberry Pi OS needs non-volatile boot media, commonly a microSD card. Raspberry Pi recommends at least 32 GB for Raspberry Pi OS Desktop or 8 GB for Raspberry Pi OS Lite. These are operating-system boot-media recommendations, not estimates for storing a music library.
- Network access: The Pi needs a working connection to send the stream. Raspberry Pi documents Wi-Fi and Ethernet, as well as headless access over SSH or Raspberry Pi Connect. Ethernet is a practical choice for a continuously running encoder, but it cannot eliminate outages.
- An audio playlist and visual source: The encoder needs both audio and video to produce the feed. Decide what image or other visual will accompany the music, and confirm that you have the rights to use it too.
- Encoder software and YouTube Live configuration: Choose software compatible with your Pi and the encoding workload. Google’s live-streaming API documentation describes a live broadcast linked to a live stream that carries the feed; it does not validate a particular Pi application, command, or configuration.
Set up and test the Pi-based stream
- Clear the playlist first. Confirm written permission for every track’s intended livestream use, archive use if applicable, and territories. Resolve Content ID allowlisting with the rights holder before launch.
- Prepare the Pi. Install Raspberry Pi OS on suitable boot media, use a power supply matched to the Pi model, and confirm that the device starts reliably. Choose Desktop or Lite according to how you intend to administer the system; the official boot-media recommendations are 32 GB for Desktop and 8 GB for Lite.
- Make network access dependable. Connect the Pi to your network and confirm that it can stay connected. For headless administration, Raspberry Pi documents SSH and Raspberry Pi Connect. Plan to monitor the connection and recover the setup if it fails.
- Configure the audio and visual inputs. Point your chosen encoder at the playlist and the visual source. Check that tracks transition as expected, audio is audible and consistent, and the visual output is present.
- Get the current YouTube stream configuration. In YouTube Studio, create or configure the live event and use its current stream settings in your encoder. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not publish it or include it in shared screenshots. Google’s API model distinguishes the live broadcast from the live stream that carries its feed.
- Choose encoder settings for the hardware and software you actually use. There is no verified, universal Pi resolution, bitrate, frame rate, or keyframe interval for this workflow. Use settings supported by your encoder and YouTube’s current guidance, then test the resulting feed in YouTube Studio. Do not assume that a setting suitable for one Pi, codec, or visual source will work on another.
- Preview before going live. Check the incoming audio and video in YouTube Studio, confirm the correct event and stream key, and make a short test with cleared music. Watch for encoding errors, dropped network connectivity, audio problems, or a rights-related interruption.
- Run an extended test and decide about archiving. Leave the full playback and encoder workflow running long enough to expose problems that a short preview would miss. Monitor the initial broadcast and decide whether to archive only after confirming that your permission covers the archive.
Prelaunch checklist
- Written rights cover every track, continuous YouTube livestreaming, relevant territories, and any planned archive.
- The rights holder has confirmed whether your channel can be allowlisted in Content ID.
- The Pi boots from suitable media, has model-matched power, and can reach the network.
- The playlist, visual source, and encoder produce a stable audio-and-video feed in the YouTube Studio preview.
- The stream key is private, the correct live event is selected, and someone can monitor and respond if the stream stops.
- The archive decision matches the permissions you obtained.
Troubleshoot common problems
YouTube interrupts or replaces the live feed
A third-party-content match may be responsible, even if you believe you have a license. Check YouTube Studio notifications and contact the rights holder to confirm both the license scope and Content ID allowlisting. Do not assume that restarting the encoder resolves the rights issue; remove or replace the disputed track unless the rights holder confirms that the use is permitted.

The live feed has no audio or video
Check that the encoder is reading the intended playlist and visual input, that playback is active, and that the stream configuration points to the correct YouTube live event. Confirm the incoming feed in YouTube Studio before relying on the stream.
The Pi stops sending the feed
Check power, boot stability, network access, and whether the playback or encoder process is still running. A wired connection may be a practical stability choice, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted service. The official Raspberry Pi setup guidance is not a 24/7 uptime guarantee.

The Pi struggles with the chosen encoding workload
Reduce the workload or choose settings supported by your particular hardware and encoder, then repeat an extended test. No model or resolution can be called universally adequate from the general Raspberry Pi setup guidance; performance depends on the configuration.
A claim appears on the archived recording
YouTube says claims on an archived live stream are made after the live stream ends. Review the claim and your permission for that specific recording with the rights holder. A prior live broadcast does not itself prove that the archive is cleared.
