YouTube supports encoder-based live streaming, but its published guidance does not promise that a single broadcast can run indefinitely. A VPS is the always-on host in this setup—not a guarantee of uninterrupted service.
1. Check that your channel can go live
Before setting up the VPS, confirm that the YouTube channel is verified and has had no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. YouTube identifies both as prerequisites for enabling live streaming. Encoder streaming is one of YouTube’s supported methods. See YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance.
2. Prepare audio and visuals you have permission to use
Use rain recordings and visuals you created or have permission to use for this broadcast. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. Its guidance warns that a stream may be interrupted or terminated if a match remains; even licensed material can be interrupted if the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel in Content ID. Ambient sound, a repeating loop, or a live format does not by itself make material exempt. Read YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.
Check the rights for every part of the program, including background audio, video, artwork, and any overlays. If a rights owner requires channel allowlisting, arrange that before broadcasting; a licence alone may not prevent an automated interruption if the allowlist is missing.

3. Configure the VPS encoder and YouTube connection
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS, H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. For audio, YouTube lists AAC or MP3. Use settings suited to the resolution you intend to send and the VPS’s sustained outbound capacity. The official guidance gives resolution-specific recommendations; do not assume a VPS can sustain a chosen bitrate just because it can briefly reach it. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
Use RTMPS where supported
RTMPS tunnels RTMP through SSL. Google’s developer documentation says the URL must use the RTMPS protocol and a valid YouTube ingestion endpoint, with the connection using port 443. Use the endpoint and stream key shown for your broadcast in YouTube’s live control room; keep the key private. See Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide.

Test the full path before the broadcast
Run a preflight stream using audio and moving video similar to the planned program, then check the YouTube dashboard’s stream-health messages. YouTube specifically advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Confirm that the audio is audible, the picture is moving as expected, the chosen bitrate is sustainable, and the stream reaches YouTube cleanly before relying on it unattended.
4. Keep the process observable and recoverable
A VPS can remain powered on while its encoder process or network connection fails. After launch, check that the encoder process is still running, that outbound connectivity is available, and that YouTube continues to report a healthy stream. Set up process supervision and restart behavior according to the Linux distribution and tools you choose; recovery behavior depends on that setup and the VPS provider.

If you monitor the stream from OBS or another encoder dashboard, an increasing dropped-frame count can indicate an unstable connection or a connection unable to sustain the configured bitrate. OBS explains this symptom in its dropped frames network troubleshooting guide. Reduce the bitrate or address network capacity and stability, then retest rather than assuming a restart alone will fix the cause.
5. Troubleshoot common failures
