To make a 24/7 rain ambience stream with distant city traffic, combine rights-cleared rain and traffic audio, an original or licensed visual, and a continuously running encoder such as OBS Studio, then send the stream to YouTube and monitor its health. Before going live, confirm your channel is eligible, test a bitrate your upload connection can sustain, and decide how you will handle replays and outages. YouTube may not capture streams longer than 12 hours, so a 24/7 broadcast needs a backup plan.
What you need before you start
- A verified YouTube channel with live streaming available. YouTube says streamers must be at least 16 and the channel must not have live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Check the current requirements and your channel’s Live Control Room before launch: YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Rain and distant traffic audio you recorded yourself or are licensed to use for live streaming and replay/archive use.
- A visual you created or have permission to use, plus an encoder such as OBS Studio.
- A reliable upload connection and a plan for local recording, stream recovery, and any YouTube replay.
A stereo field recorder is optional if you want to make original recordings. You do not need one if you already have suitable, cleared audio.
Choose or create rain and distant traffic audio
Record it yourself
Original recordings give you more control over the mix and help make the stream distinctive. Record rain as the foreground texture and traffic as a quieter, more distant layer. Listen for sudden level changes, clipping, wind noise, and obvious loop points. If you use a stereo field recorder, treat it as optional source-audio equipment, not a streaming requirement.
Use third-party audio only with the right permissions
Check that a license explicitly covers continuous live streaming and keeping or replaying an archive. Save the license and records identifying the source. Permission to use a track does not necessarily prevent an automated interruption: YouTube says the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Review YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams. If a live stream stops, YouTube advises checking the YouTube Studio dashboard for strikes.

Make the loop feel intentional
Blend the sources at levels that preserve the sense of distance: traffic should sit behind the rain rather than compete with it. Use clean fades or edits at loop boundaries, and listen to the full loop before broadcasting. A loop can be used, but simply repeating generic material is not a guarantee of monetization eligibility. Rights clearance and monetization originality are separate questions.
Build the OBS scene
- Create a scene: In OBS, add a new scene for the ambience stream.
- Add the visual: Use an original or licensed image, or a low-motion scene you have permission to broadcast. A still image keeps the video simple; subtle movement can be added if it is yours or licensed.
- Add the audio: Add your continuous rain-and-traffic mix as an audio source. Check that it plays without gaps, distortion, or unintended silence when the scene is active.
- Check audio levels: Monitor OBS’s audio meters while the mix plays. Keep peaks below clipping and listen on headphones or speakers for hiss, abrupt changes, and loop seams.
- Keep the source files available: Store the audio and visual files where OBS can access them reliably, and make a separate copy of original recordings and license details.

Create the YouTube broadcast and set encoder quality
- Open YouTube Studio: Create a live broadcast in the Live Control Room, then copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the stream key like a password; do not publish or share it.
- Choose RTMPS where available: YouTube recommends RTMPS for the connection between encoder and platform. Follow the current values shown in the Live Control Room and YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
- Set a stable video mode: For H.264, YouTube’s recommendations accessed in 2026 list 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These are recommended video bitrates, not guarantees that your connection can sustain them. Choose the resolution and frame rate you can maintain consistently.
- Use CBR and keyframes: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and a 2-second keyframe interval, with 4 seconds as the maximum in its current guidance.
- Test the upload: Run a speed test, then test OBS with the actual audio, visual, resolution, and bitrate you plan to use. Leave upload headroom for normal variation rather than setting the stream at the connection’s apparent limit.
For this kind of mostly static scene, 720p at 30 fps may be an adequate lower-bandwidth choice; 1080p at 30 fps provides more visual detail but requires a higher recommended bitrate and more sustained upload capacity. Pick the highest setting that remains stable in representative tests rather than assuming a higher resolution is automatically better.
Test, start, and monitor the stream
- Start the encoder and confirm YouTube receives the signal in the Live Control Room.
- Listen to the live preview and check that both rain and traffic are audible, balanced, and free of clipping or unintended gaps.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health and OBS statistics during a representative test. OBS notes that rising dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot maintain; lower the bitrate or resolution, or improve the connection, then test again.
- After the stream is live, check it periodically. Have access to the stream key and source files so you can recover from an encoder or connection interruption.
Plan for a 24/7 broadcast and its replay
Keep the encoder running
With a local OBS setup, the computer, OBS, and internet connection must remain available for the stream to continue. Power loss, a system restart, an OBS crash, or an internet outage can interrupt it. Avoid unattended updates or sleep settings that shut down the computer, and consider how you will notice and respond if the stream stops.

Do not rely on YouTube as the only archive
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but this is not a guarantee for any particular broadcast. It warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. For a continuous channel, consider shorter broadcast segments if replays matter, and keep local recordings or source files as your own backup. YouTube recommends a local recording backup. Check the behavior shown in your channel’s current Live Control Room before relying on an archive: YouTube’s archive guidance.
Make the content your own
YouTube’s monetization policy applies to live streams. On July 15, 2025, YouTube said it clarified its existing policy to include repetitive or mass-produced material and renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content.” Monetized work should be original and authentic, not generic, repetitive, or mass-produced. A continuous loop or a license by itself does not establish monetization eligibility. Read YouTube’s channel monetization policies.
