Yes. A Mac mini can sleep if its power settings allow it, and sleep may interrupt a livestream or other running tasks. To keep the Mac awake while its display turns off, open Apple menu > System Settings > Energy and enable Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off. This prevents automatic sleep; it does not guarantee that YouTube will stay live through a network outage, power loss, or streaming-app failure.
Stop a Mac mini from sleeping while streaming
- Open Energy settings: choose Apple menu > System Settings > Energy. Apple gives this guidance for desktop Macs, including Mac mini. Available options and labels can vary by model and macOS release. Apple’s Energy settings guide
- Prevent automatic computer sleep: turn on Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off. Apple describes this as preventing the Mac from going to sleep automatically while its display is off.
- Set the display separately: in Apple menu > System Settings > Lock Screen, adjust when the display turns off. The display can turn off without putting the Mac itself to sleep. The exact available settings can vary. Apple’s sleep and wake settings guide
- Check the stream: confirm your streaming app is still running and the YouTube broadcast is live. The Energy setting addresses automatic sleep, not app recovery or stream reconnection.
Apple recommends preventing sleep when setting up a Mac mini as a server, warning that “If your Mac mini goes to sleep, currently running tasks and processes may be interrupted.” Apple’s Mac mini server setup guide
Keep the display on, or let it turn off?
| Setup | What happens | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Keep the display on | The screen remains available for monitoring; computer sleep still depends on its settings. | Uses the display while unattended. |
| Turn off the display and prevent automatic sleep | The display can turn off while the Mac remains awake for the stream. | Apple warns that preventing or delaying sleep may increase power consumption. Apple’s Energy settings guide |
If you use a Mac mini as a server, Apple also recommends configuring it to start automatically after a power failure. A restart—for example, after a power outage or macOS update—may still require you to relaunch server apps manually unless they are configured to open automatically. Apple’s server setup guidance
What this setting does—and does not—protect against
- Automatic sleep: the Energy setting prevents automatic sleep when the display is off.
- Power interruption: startup-after-power-failure settings and UPS options may help with local power continuity. A UPS does not, by itself, ensure the internet connection remains available or that a YouTube stream resumes.
- App restart or recovery: preventing sleep does not configure your streaming app to relaunch after a restart or reconnect if the broadcast drops. Apple notes that server apps may need manual relaunch after a restart unless set to launch automatically.
- Network access while sleeping: Energy settings also include Wake for network access for shared resources. Apple describes this separately; it is not a substitute for keeping the Mac awake during a stream.
Apple does not publish a rate for how often Mac minis sleep during YouTube streams or how often sleep interrupts them. Its guidance explains macOS settings and server setup, rather than measuring livestream reliability.

Troubleshoot a stream that stops anyway
The Mac appears to sleep
Recheck System Settings > Energy and confirm the automatic-sleep option is enabled. If the Mac sleeps or wakes unexpectedly, Apple advises checking sleep settings, background activity, connected devices, Spotlight indexing, and other possible causes. Apple’s unexpected sleep and wake guide
The Mac restarted or lost power
Review Start up automatically after a power failure and UPS Options in Energy settings, where available. Check whether your streaming app is configured to open automatically; otherwise you may need to relaunch it after a restart. A UPS can provide a buffer for some local power interruptions, but does not guarantee uninterrupted internet or livestream recovery.

The Mac stays awake but the broadcast ends
That points beyond automatic sleep. Check whether the streaming app is still running, whether the internet connection is available, and whether YouTube still shows the broadcast as live. The cited Apple guidance does not establish how YouTube or a particular streaming app will reconnect after a dropped stream, so verify recovery in the app and YouTube rather than assuming the Energy setting handles it.
