Then confirm the output uses an audio codec supported for YouTube RTMP/RTMPS and test the local output against YouTube’s preview. If sound vanishes only when the video repeats, investigate the loop seam separately; the fix depends on the file and encoding.
1. Check whether the source file contains audio
Do not begin by changing YouTube settings if the input itself is silent. Probe the file and inspect the stream list:
ffprobe -hide_banner input.mp4Look for one or more lines identified as audio streams, such as Audio: aac. If there is no audio stream, the file has no sound track for FFmpeg to send. If it has several, identify which one contains the intended program audio. FFmpeg’s stream-selection documentation explains automatic selection and explicit mapping.
2. Check that FFmpeg is not omitting the audio
Review the command and FFmpeg’s startup log. An output -an disables audio selection or mapping. Explicit -map options can also select only video or the wrong audio stream. If you use explicit mapping, map the video and the intended audio stream from the input.

For a file known to contain audio, this is a diagnostic pattern for looping a file into YouTube over RTMP:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4
-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0
-c:v libx264 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "rtmp://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2/STREAM_KEY"This example explicitly selects the first video and first audio streams, encodes audio as AAC, and loops the input. Replace input.mp4 and STREAM_KEY with your own values. It is an illustrative pattern, not a tested command or a guarantee for every file, FFmpeg build, event, or ingest endpoint. Keep the stream key private and test privately or unlisted before relying on a long-running stream.

Place -stream_loop -1 before the input it applies to. The -re option reads a file at its native frame rate, which is useful when pacing file output for live streaming. FFmpeg cautions against imposing a low read rate on a true live capture input, where it can cause packet loss. See the FFmpeg documentation for input pacing and advanced options.
3. Confirm the output mapping and audio format
Read FFmpeg’s Stream mapping and output-stream summary in the log. The intended audio stream should be mapped to the output, and the output should use a codec compatible with the protocol. YouTube’s live encoder settings list AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS; AAC is required for 5.1 surround. For stereo, YouTube recommends a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps audio bitrate. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that every source or build will work without adjustment. The same guidance recommends CBR video encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, not over four seconds.

Stream-copy audio or encode AAC?
If the source audio already uses a suitable format, stream-copying can reduce processing, but compatibility and loop behavior depend on the source encoding and container. Re-encoding to AAC aligns with YouTube’s listed RTMP/RTMPS options, but uses processing capacity and can introduce a generation of quality loss. If the audio is present but incompatible or unstable at the repeat, test AAC re-encoding. There is no universal best choice for every file.
4. If the source has no audio
FFmpeg cannot recover music, narration, or other sound that is absent from the file. If you intentionally need to send silence, or your particular workflow requires an audio stream, FFmpeg can generate a silent track with anullsrc and map it alongside the video. For example, a tutorial describes generating stereo 44.1 kHz silence and encoding it as AAC: FFmpeg looping example. This sends silence; it does not restore missing program sound. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists supported audio codecs, but does not establish that every video-only feed is rejected.

5. Find where the sound disappears
Compare the original file, FFmpeg’s local output or recording, and YouTube’s live preview and playback. YouTube recommends testing with audio and video representative of the real stream and monitoring stream health. Its live stream troubleshooting guidance advises checking encoder output, local archives, dashboard errors, and CPU load.
- Original file is silent: choose a source with the intended audio, or correct the media before streaming.
- Original is audible but the FFmpeg output is silent: check the selected input stream,
-map, any-anoption, and the output audio codec. - Local output is audible but YouTube is silent or interrupted: inspect YouTube’s preview and stream-health messages, then check the encoder log and outbound connection. YouTube recommends enough upload bandwidth, spare headroom, and a reliable connection; see its streaming and network tips.
6. If audio drops at the loop boundary
A file can have a valid audio track yet produce an audible gap or discontinuity when it repeats. Listen across several loop boundaries and check whether the disruption occurs at the same point each time. Loop-seam behavior can depend on media structure, encoding, and FFmpeg version. If it is seam-specific, compare the source audio stream copied as-is with a version re-encoded to AAC. Re-encoding is a test, not a guaranteed fix for every file.

If the symptom is a connection interruption rather than a repeat-specific audio gap, FFmpeg’s FIFO pseudo-muxer supports configurable recovery and retry behavior for output failures. That can address some output failures; it does not fix a missing or incorrectly mapped audio stream. Depending on configuration, recovery can also involve queueing or dropping packets.
