Streamlabs Streamer University is a beginner-oriented collection of lessons on setting up and growing a livestream—not an accredited degree program. Its published curriculum ranges from equipment and live-stream setup to branding, community, monetization, and taxes. The course listing dates its lessons to August 1, 2022, so use it as a broad starting point and pair it with Streamlabs’ newer setup guidance.
What Streamlabs Streamer University covers
The Streamlabs course listing includes lessons on the practical work of starting a stream as well as the decisions involved in building a channel. The listed subjects are:
- Types of Twitch streamers
- Live-stream setup
- Branding a live stream
- Gaining followers and growing on Twitch and other platforms
- Equipment for live streaming
- Building a community
- Gaming tips
- Advice from Twitch streamers
- Making money from streaming
- Filing taxes as a Twitch streamer
The catalogue displays August 1, 2022 as the publication date for these lessons. It is a wide-ranging introductory curriculum, but the listing does not establish accreditation, course-completion requirements, formal learning outcomes, or measurable student results. Treat it as educational material, not a credential or a promise of audience growth or income. See the Streamer University course listing.
How to use the lessons with current setup guidance
The older course collection can help you understand the topics a new streamer needs to consider. For current Streamlabs Desktop setup details, use Streamlabs’ newer guides alongside it: the quick-start guide dated May 20, 2026 walks through downloading Desktop, configuring video, adding overlays, connecting platforms, and going live. Its requirements describe Streamlabs Desktop specifically; they are not universal requirements for every streaming setup. Read Streamlabs’ Desktop quick-start guide.

Streamlabs Desktop system requirements
Streamlabs’ quick-start guidance lists a minimum of Windows 11 or macOS 12, 8 GB of RAM, and 10 GB of storage. Its recommended configuration is Windows 11 or macOS 13 or later, 16 GB of RAM, an Intel Core i5 11th- or 12th-generation processor or AMD Ryzen 5 5600X or higher, an Nvidia RTX 20/30-series or AMD RX 5000/6000-series GPU, and an SSD of 512 GB or larger.
These are Streamlabs’ stated recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular game, capture setup, or collection of programs will run smoothly. Resource-intensive games, digital art, animated overlays, and advanced plugins can demand more than a simple talking stream. Streamlabs’ system-requirements guidance also recommends Ethernet and gives platform-oriented upload and bitrate guidance; check the live page for the settings that fit your platform and workload. Review Streamlabs’ system requirements.

What equipment do you need to start live streaming?
You do not necessarily need to buy a camera or microphone before your first stream. Streamlabs’ Desktop setup guidance lets you choose built-in webcam and microphone inputs, then add external equipment later. Start with what you already have if it works for the content you plan to make, and upgrade only when a specific limitation is holding the stream back. See Streamlabs’ stream setup guidance.
Built-in camera or external webcam
Use the built-in camera if it gives you the framing and image quality your stream needs. Consider an external webcam if the current camera cannot provide a useful angle, a clear image, or a suitable position for your setup. The course’s equipment lesson discusses gear for Twitch, YouTube, or Facebook, but the reviewed guidance does not establish that every beginner needs an external camera or endorse particular models. Read the equipment lesson.

Built-in microphone or external microphone
Listen to a test recording before buying anything. If your current microphone captures clear speech in your room, it may be sufficient to begin. If room noise, distance, or unclear speech makes listening difficult, an external microphone may be a useful upgrade. Streamlabs’ setup flow supports built-in inputs and adding external gear later; its guidance does not identify a universally necessary microphone or a tested model.
Minimum or recommended computer specifications
Choose according to the workload, not the most demanding specification you can afford. A simple stream may place different demands on a computer than a resource-intensive game, digital-art workflow, animated overlays, or advanced plugins. Compare your intended applications with Streamlabs’ stated requirements, and allow for the fact that running several programs at once can change performance. These figures apply to Streamlabs Desktop guidance rather than streaming software in general.

Existing computer or dedicated streaming computer
Try the intended workflow on your existing system before purchasing a second computer. A dedicated streaming machine is a consideration only if the current computer cannot handle the games or applications, capture, and stream tasks you need to run together. The cited Streamlabs materials give Desktop requirements but do not establish that every streamer needs a dedicated PC.

What the course does—and does not—tell you about growth and income
The curriculum includes lessons about followers, community, making money, and taxes, which makes it broader than a hardware or software setup tutorial. But the course listing does not provide a student success rate, expected earnings, or evidence that completing the lessons will produce a particular audience or income. Treat those subjects as areas to learn about, not guaranteed outcomes. For tax decisions, use guidance appropriate to your location and circumstances.
For a YouTube channel that needs to stay live 24/7
Streamer University and Streamlabs Desktop guidance concern learning to stream and setting up creator tools; they do not establish a Streamlabs 24/7 cloud-looping service. If your separate goal is to keep a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is the first option to consider: it runs the loop in the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers the first day free.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection left on. Your upload streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; automatic recovery can restart the stream if YouTube drops it. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams made from uploaded videos, not camera-based broadcasts. Learn about StreamNeo, or start your free day.
