You can stream a prepared Tamil devotional playlist to YouTube Live from a Linux VPS by feeding a compatible media file to FFmpeg and sending it to YouTube over RTMPS. Before you start, confirm that your channel can livestream and that you have the rights to every recording and visual in the stream. Then configure YouTube’s ingest details, test the FFmpeg output, and monitor both YouTube’s stream health and the VPS process.
Check channel eligibility and music rights first
Confirm your channel can go live
YouTube’s current eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance before setting up the event.
Clear the rights to recordings and artwork
A devotional song’s age or religious subject does not automatically make a particular recording, performance, arrangement, or image free to rebroadcast. Check the rights for each recording and visual, including whether permission covers livestreaming, the territories where viewers may watch, and any archived replay.
YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. A match can replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. Even if you have a license, YouTube notes that interruption can occur unless the rights holder adds your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Ask the rights holder about allowlisting before the broadcast; do not assume that a license alone prevents a match-related interruption.

Prepare the playlist and VPS
Use a single tested media file for the simplest setup
For a reproducible first stream, render the playlist into one local media file containing both the desired picture and audio. It can use a static devotional visual, provided you have rights to that image. A single file avoids the extra timing and compatibility work involved in joining separate tracks while the stream runs.
If you want FFmpeg to handle multiple files directly, test the actual playlist before going live. Files may differ in codecs, dimensions, frame rates, audio layout, or timestamps; transitions can have gaps, and concat or filter behavior depends on the files and how they are prepared. Confirm that the finished output plays continuously and that the audio transitions are acceptable.
Check VPS capacity, not just the advertised plan
The VPS needs enough CPU to encode your chosen video and enough sustained outbound bandwidth to send it to YouTube. Test actual upload capacity from the VPS under realistic conditions. A plan label or peak speed does not establish that the connection can sustain a live bitrate continuously.
FFmpeg must be installed with an RTMPS-capable build. YouTube uses RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS/SSL; Google’s ingest documentation specifies port 443. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions and FFmpeg’s protocol documentation.

Create the YouTube live stream and retrieve its ingest details
-
Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create a stream or schedule one, and choose the relevant visibility and event settings for your channel.
-
In Stream settings, copy the RTMPS URL. YouTube explains that you can reveal the RTMPS URL using the lock icon in the Stream URL field. Use the RTMPS address rather than substituting an ordinary RTMP address.
-
Copy the stream key associated with that event. Keep it secret: do not put a real key in a public tutorial, source repository, screenshot, support ticket, or shell history. The command below uses placeholders; enter your own ingest URL and key locally.
YouTube’s API documents primary and backup ingest addresses, but the one-process example below uses the primary address only. Treat the stream key like a password: if it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.

Choose encoder settings for the source and connection
YouTube’s current encoder guidance accepts H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; CBR; and frame rates up to 60 fps. For a basic SDR stream, use progressive scan and square pixels. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it must not exceed four seconds. Its stereo audio guidance is 44.1 kHz at 128 kbps, and it lists Rec. 709 for SDR. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings for the current table and requirements.
| H.264 video target | YouTube-listed minimum bitrate | YouTube-listed recommended bitrate | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps | A lower-bandwidth or lower-resolution source and a VPS with limited sustained outbound capacity. |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps | A suitable 1080p source and enough sustained network and encoder capacity for the selected bitrate. |
These are YouTube’s published video-bitrate values, not a guarantee that a particular VPS can sustain them. Choose settings based on the source’s quality, the VPS’s encoding capacity, and its measured outbound path. YouTube also lists 4 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended for 1080p30 H.265 or AV1, but the example command below uses H.264.
The command sets 5 Mbps video for 1080p30-class H.264. That is YouTube’s listed minimum for that format, not its recommended bitrate, so it may trade visual quality for bandwidth. For a 720p30 H.264 stream, reduce the output resolution and use bitrate settings appropriate to that target; do not simply label a higher-resolution output as 720p. YouTube transcodes incoming live video into output formats for viewers.
Run FFmpeg to loop the media file
Use this illustrative command with a compatible MP4 containing the picture and playlist audio. Replace the final URL with the exact RTMPS URL and stream key from your Live Control Room. Do not publish a real key.

What the command assumes and sets
-rereads the file at real-time pace;-stream_loop -1repeats it indefinitely.- The input file already has suitable video and audio. If it lacks either stream, this command does not create the missing one; use an appropriate video-generation or audio-only design instead.
libx264encodes H.264,veryfasttrades some compression efficiency for lower CPU demand, andyuv420pselects a commonly compatible pixel format.-r 30sets 30 frames per second. A 60-frame GOP at that frame rate is two seconds; the keyframe options keep the interval regular.- The video rate is fixed at 5,000 kbps, with a 10,000 kbps buffer setting. Audio is AAC stereo at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz.
-f flvselects the muxer commonly used for RTMP-family streaming. The destination must still be the RTMPS URL supplied by YouTube.
This is an example to adapt and test, not a universal or vendor-certified command. Confirm that the installed FFmpeg build supports RTMPS, that the input decodes cleanly, and that your VPS can encode and send the chosen output without falling behind.

During the stream, watch YouTube Studio’s stream-health display and review any warnings. For a more technical monitoring workflow, the LiveStreams API exposes health status and configuration issue information.
Keep the VPS process supervised
For an unattended VPS, a service manager such as systemd can start FFmpeg at boot and restart the process if it exits. Configure the service with the media path and protected credentials appropriate to your system, and avoid placing a live key in a broadly readable unit file or logs.
A process restart is not a guarantee of an uninterrupted YouTube broadcast. It does not ensure that the live event remains healthy, resumes at the desired point in the playlist, or meets YouTube’s or the hosting provider’s availability expectations. Set up monitoring or alerts appropriate to your use, and check YouTube’s preview and health status after a restart. No particular VPS provider, plan, or systemd unit configuration is established here.
Troubleshoot common failures
FFmpeg cannot connect or YouTube does not receive the stream
- Likely causes: the wrong URL or key, a copied ordinary RTMP URL instead of RTMPS, a revoked key, an outbound network restriction, or an FFmpeg build without RTMPS support.
- What to check: copy the current RTMPS URL and key from the correct Live Control Room event, confirm outbound access to the ingest service on port 443, and verify RTMPS support in the installed FFmpeg build.
The stream buffers, drops frames, or reports poor health
- Likely causes: bitrate exceeds sustained VPS upload capacity, the VPS is CPU-bound during encoding, or the source/output settings are too demanding.
- What to check: compare actual VPS upload performance with the selected bitrate, review FFmpeg’s encoding output and YouTube’s health messages, then lower the target resolution or bitrate if the path cannot sustain the current settings.
Video or audio is missing, incompatible, or out of sync
- Likely causes: the file lacks the assumed track, has an unsupported or irregular stream, or playlist parts do not join cleanly.
- What to check: inspect and play the prepared file before streaming; test transitions and synchronization. If using multiple files, normalize or otherwise prepare them consistently and verify the actual concatenated output before going live.
YouTube interrupts the stream for a content match
- Likely causes: a recording, performance, arrangement, or visual matches third-party material, or the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel.
- What to check: review the event’s YouTube messages, verify permissions for the specific material, and contact the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting. A devotional subject or a license by itself does not establish that a live stream will avoid interruption.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a prepared YouTube playlist that keeps running without a VPS process to maintain, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube, not a live camera feed.
