Usually, FFmpeg is doing what the loop setting asks: -stream_loop repeats the entire input, so playback starts again at the clip’s first frame when a pass ends. If the first frame repeats within the clip—or the video appears to freeze on it—check for a loop video filter buffering just one frame. A loop can also restart correctly yet look jarring if its last image does not flow into its first.
First, identify where the repetition happens
- Only at the end of each complete pass: likely normal whole-input looping with
-stream_loop. - Repeatedly during the clip, or frozen on the opening image: inspect the filter graph for a
loopfilter, especiallysize=1:start=0. - At an unexpected point in a sequence of clips: check whether the input is an image sequence or concat list; those have their own input and timestamp behavior.
The exact cause cannot be diagnosed without the command and media details. The checks below distinguish the common cases.
Check whether you are looping the whole video
FFmpeg documents -stream_loop as an input option: 0 means no looping, and -1 means infinite looping. To repeat an encoded video indefinitely, place the option before the input it applies to:
ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -i meditation.mp4 ...
At the end of every pass, the next pass begins at the input’s opening frame. That is expected; it does not by itself indicate a broken file or a frozen frame. If the frame repeats within a pass, inspect filters and the rest of the command rather than treating the normal pass boundary as the cause. FFmpeg documents -stream_loop among its advanced options.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check the video loop filter’s frame count
The video loop filter repeats buffered frames rather than restarting the complete input. Its size parameter sets the maximum number of frames to buffer, and start selects where the loop begins; both default to zero. The official example loop=loop=-1:size=1:start=0 deliberately repeats just the first frame forever. A similar configuration in your filter chain can therefore look like a frozen opening image.
- Read the full command and locate any
-vf,-filter:v, or-filter_complexoptions. - Search the filter graph for
loop=and note its loop count, size, andstartvalues. - If you intended to repeat the whole clip, remove the unintended frame-loop filter and use the appropriate input looping option. If you intended to repeat only a section, choose a buffer size and start frame that match that section; do not change them blindly.
See the official FFmpeg loop-filter documentation, which describes the feature as “Loop video frames.”

Match the loop method to the input type
Encoded video
For an MP4 or another encoded clip, first check whether -stream_loop precedes the relevant -i. Then inspect any frame-loop filters. The two controls have different scopes: one repeats an input stream; the other repeats selected buffered frames.
Numbered image sequence
If the source is numbered images rather than an encoded video, FFmpeg may be using its image2 demuxer. That demuxer has a separate input loop option, disabled by default, and its documented default frame rate is 25 fps. Check the actual input pattern and options rather than assuming encoded-video looping rules apply. See the image2 demuxer documentation.

Concat list
If the command uses the concat demuxer, FFmpeg adjusts timestamps so each listed file begins where the preceding file ends. The listed files need matching streams, codecs, and time bases; inaccurate stored duration can cause artifacts. Check duration metadata and stream compatibility if the repeated frame appears where files meet or the timing seems wrong. See the concat demuxer documentation.
Make a technically valid loop look smooth
When a whole-input loop restarts, the final image transitions back to the opening image. If those images differ sharply, the jump will be visible every time, even though looping is working as configured. For meditation footage, review the actual transition: a locked camera, still landscape, slow movement, or a deliberate crossfade may help, but none guarantees a seamless result. Compare the decoded last and first images and adjust the footage or edit point if the transition is distracting.

Troubleshoot in this order
- Pinpoint the timing: note whether the first frame returns only after a full pass, repeats during playback, or appears at a join between files.
- Inspect the complete command: confirm the position of
-stream_looprelative to the input it should repeat. - Inspect filters: find every
loop=in the video filter graph and check the buffer size, start frame, and loop-count parameters. - Identify the input path: determine whether the source is an encoded video, an image sequence, or a concat list; check the corresponding input options.
- Check the visual boundary: compare the final and opening decoded images if the repetition happens only at the pass boundary.
- Gather details if it persists: include the complete command, FFmpeg version, input stream details, and when the repetition occurs. Without them, the specific cause remains uncertain.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a prerecorded meditation video live on YouTube, StreamNeo is a separate option from diagnosing an FFmpeg loop: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
