How to Stream Prerecorded Videos to YouTube from a Chromebook Using Remote Desktop

A Chromebook can control a separate computer that runs the encoder and sends prerecorded video to YouTube Live. Here is how to set it up and monitor the stream.

You can control a YouTube livestream from a Chromebook by remotely accessing a separate Mac, Windows, or Linux computer that runs the encoder. The Chromebook is the control screen; the host computer plays and sends the prerecorded video to YouTube. The host must remain online while it streams.

What you need before starting

  • A Chromebook with internet access and permission to use Chrome Remote Desktop.
  • A separate Mac, Windows, or Linux computer that can stay powered on and connected to the internet for the stream.
  • A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so check this well before your planned broadcast. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the process.
  • A YouTube-compatible encoder on the host computer. YouTube supports software encoders running on computers as well as standalone hardware encoders. Follow the current instructions for your chosen encoder to feed it a prerecorded video file; the cited YouTube guidance does not specify a particular desktop app or file-playback configuration.

Chrome Remote Desktop gives you control of the host, but it does not run the encoder on ChromeOS or send the video from the Chromebook. The host computer is the machine that produces and uploads the stream.

Set up remote access to the host computer

  1. On the host: open Google’s Chrome Remote Desktop instructions, choose remote access, and configure the computer as a host. Google documents Mac, Windows, and Linux hosts.
  2. On the Chromebook: open Chrome Remote Desktop on the web, choose the host when it appears online, and enter the PIN you configured. The host must be reachable over the internet. A managed Chromebook account or a restrictive work or school network may prevent remote access.
  3. Confirm control before the broadcast: verify that you can operate the host and open its encoder. Google says, “For your security, all remote desktop sessions are fully encrypted.” See Google’s Chrome Remote Desktop help.

Prepare the YouTube stream and prerecorded video

  1. On the host, open the encoder you plan to use and prepare the prerecorded video according to that encoder’s current documentation. Confirm that the file’s audio and picture play as expected before sending it live.
  2. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream using the encoder workflow. YouTube’s instructions are in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  3. Copy the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room into the corresponding fields in the host encoder. Treat the stream key like a password: do not share it, and reset it if it may have been exposed.
  4. Choose settings your host’s upload connection can sustain. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension to RTMP, and publishes encoder guidance by resolution and frame rate. For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube lists 5 Mbps as the minimum bitrate and 14 Mbps as recommended—not a guarantee that a particular connection can sustain the stream. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate table.

Start, monitor, and end the broadcast

  1. Start sending from the encoder on the host. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room and select Go live when it is ready.
  2. Before the event, test with representative motion and audio, check the preview, and confirm the stream health indicators. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend testing under conditions similar to the actual stream and monitoring health.
  3. Keep the host powered on, connected, and running the encoder for the entire broadcast. If the host loses power or internet, the Chromebook’s remote session cannot keep the encoder output going.
  4. When finished, end the stream in YouTube and stop sending from the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; consult its encoder guide for stream handling details.

Check copyright and channel rules for prerecorded content

Using an encoder does not change YouTube’s livestream eligibility or content rules. Confirm that you have the rights to stream the video and its audio, and review YouTube’s current policies before broadcasting. A successful technical setup does not itself establish that a video is authorized or that a channel complies with YouTube rules.

Common problems and fixes

  • The host does not appear online: check that it is powered on, connected to the internet, and configured for remote access. A managed account or network restrictions may block the connection; ask the organization’s administrator where relevant.
  • The PIN or remote session fails: confirm you are connecting to the intended host and using its configured PIN. Recheck the Chrome Remote Desktop setup on the host if access remains unavailable.
  • YouTube does not receive a stream: check that the encoder is running and that the stream URL and key were copied correctly. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube and update the encoder.
  • The preview is unstable or stream health is poor: test the host’s upload capacity, reduce encoder quality to a setting the connection can sustain, and run another test with representative sound and motion. Use YouTube’s bitrate guidance for the selected resolution and frame rate.
  • The video plays but audio or motion is wrong: stop before going live and check the source file and encoder’s documented playback setup. Test the sections of the video that contain the most movement and the full range of expected audio.

When dedicated streaming hardware is an option

If you need scheduled prerecorded playout without leaving a computer running, YouTube’s encoder directory describes the AJA HELO Plus as a standalone H.264 encoder. It says the optional AJA PlayToStream functionality can schedule prerecorded media and stream it directly to YouTube Live without a computer. This is an alternative hardware route, not a required part of the Chromebook-and-remote-host method; the cited documentation does not establish its price or current availability. Details appear in YouTube’s encoder guide.
