Use an encoder such as OBS Studio to send YouTube a video stream that displays your still image while the encoder plays your MP3 archive as its audio. Connect to YouTube over RTMPS, configure the stream using YouTube’s current encoder guidance, and test that the image, audio, archive order, and stream health are all correct before going live. A still image alone is not a video stream: the encoder must package it as the video component alongside the audio.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel set up for live streaming and the stream key for the broadcast you intend to use.
- The still image you want viewers to see, plus the MP3 files arranged in the order you want them to play.
- An encoder, such as OBS Studio, capable of sending an audiovisual feed to YouTube Live.
- Permission to rebroadcast every part of the archive, including music, theme songs, advertisements, guest recordings, and inserted clips.
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. The image must be rendered by the encoder as video; it is not a substitute for the video stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its encrypted version of RTMP. YouTube’s live encoder settings and RTMPS ingestion documentation describe the supported formats and connection requirements.
Prepare and clear the podcast archive
Choose the image and episode order
Select a still image that can remain on screen for the whole broadcast, such as podcast artwork or a title card. Check that it is legible at the video resolution you plan to stream. Put the MP3 episodes in their intended sequence and decide whether the archive should stop after the last file or repeat. Playback and playlist controls vary by encoder and version, so verify that your chosen software can advance through the files and handle the desired repeat behavior.
Review rights across every file
Do not assume that audio previously published as a podcast is automatically cleared for a live rebroadcast. Check rights for the complete archive, including licensed music and third-party clips. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content; a match can replace the live video with a placeholder image, interrupt the stream, or lead to termination. If you have a license, the rights holder may still need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Review YouTube’s guidance on live-stream copyright before broadcasting.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Set up OBS and connect it to YouTube Live
- Create the scene. In OBS Studio, add a scene for the broadcast, then add the still image as a visual source. Resize or position it so it fills the canvas as intended.
- Add the MP3 playback. Add or route audio playback into the scene and configure the playlist or playback controls for the archive order and repeat behavior you want. The exact control names and available playlist behavior depend on the OBS version and playback method; confirm that files advance correctly rather than assuming a single MP3 source will automatically play a whole folder.
- Choose YouTube RTMPS. In OBS’s stream settings, select YouTube – RTMPS and use the stream key associated with the intended broadcast. Treat the key like a password: do not share it or show it in a recording or screenshot.
- Set output and video options. Use CBR rate control and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. Choose the video resolution and bitrate from YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance, taking your available upload connection into account. Select a supported video codec: H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1.
- Set audio options. YouTube lists MP3 and AAC as supported audio codecs. For stereo, its guidance lists a 44.1 kHz sample rate and recommends 128 Kbps. Confirm that the encoder is actually receiving the archive audio and that the channel count matches your setup.
- Start the encoder and verify YouTube’s preview. Follow OBS’s YouTube streaming guide for its current interface. Check that the preview shows the still image, the audio is audible, and the archive advances as intended. YouTube’s settings and interface can change, so consult the current encoder guidance rather than relying on old screenshots.
For RTMPS, the ingestion documentation specifies a valid YouTube ingestion endpoint, an RTMPS URL, and port 443. In an ordinary OBS setup, choose the YouTube RTMPS service rather than manually inventing an endpoint. YouTube’s official guidance recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport; see its RTMPS ingestion guide.
Test before making the broadcast public
Run a private or unlisted test if that fits your channel workflow. YouTube recommends testing before starting and monitoring stream health. Test with representative audio and confirm the visual and playlist behavior for this still-image format.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- The YouTube preview shows the intended image without unwanted cropping or blank space.
- The audio is present, clear, and at a sensible level; no file is unexpectedly silent or distorted.
- The archive starts at the intended episode, moves to the next file, and stops or repeats as intended.
- YouTube reports healthy stream status, not merely that OBS has connected.
- The selected broadcast’s visibility and scheduled-stream behavior are correct. An encoder connection does not by itself guarantee that the event is publicly live; auto-start and scheduled-stream settings can affect the transition.
Keep the stream key private during the test, too. If you need to change or replace it, use YouTube’s controls for the intended broadcast and update the encoder securely.
Monitor the live stream and end it cleanly
During the broadcast, watch YouTube’s stream health indicators and confirm that playback continues through the archive as planned. If YouTube detects third-party material, respond to the notice rather than assuming that an encoder reconnect will resolve a rights issue. When the broadcast is over, stop streaming in OBS and confirm in YouTube Live Control Room that the broadcast has ended.

Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube preview is blank or shows no still image | The image source is missing, hidden, outside the canvas, or the encoder is not sending video. | Check the active OBS scene, image-source visibility and placement, and YouTube preview. Confirm the encoder is producing a supported video stream. |
| Preview has an image but no sound | The MP3 playback is not routed into the stream, has not started, or is muted. | Check OBS audio meters and mute states, start the intended file or playlist, and confirm audio is audible in YouTube’s preview. |
| The first episode plays but the archive does not advance | The selected playback method may play only one file, or its playlist/next-file behavior is not configured. | Check the encoder’s version-specific playlist controls and test the transition between files before broadcasting. |
| OBS connects but the broadcast is not visible to viewers | The event may not have been made live, or scheduled-stream and auto-start settings may affect the transition. | Check the event status and YouTube Live Control Room; do not treat encoder connection alone as proof that viewers can watch. |
| YouTube reports poor stream health or interruptions | The upload connection may not sustain the chosen video bitrate, or encoder settings may not match YouTube’s guidance. | Check stream health, compare bitrate with YouTube’s current table for the chosen resolution, and use CBR with a two-second keyframe interval. Test again before relying on the connection. |
| The stream is interrupted after a copyright match | Audio in the archive may match third-party content, even if the channel believes it has a license. | Review YouTube’s notice and resolve rights with the owner. For licensed content, ask whether the channel must be added to the owner’s Content ID allowlist. |
| OBS cannot connect to YouTube | The selected service, stream key, or connection details may be wrong, or the network may block the connection. | Confirm YouTube – RTMPS and the correct key for the intended broadcast. YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion documentation specifies port 443; avoid guessing or copying an unverified ingest URL. |
