A webcam is sufficient if it captures the class clearly; use an encoder when you need external camera or audio gear. If by “continuous” you mean an unattended, prerecorded 24/7 channel, that is a different setup with extra hosting, monitoring, rights, and replay considerations.
Choose what “continuous” means for your class
A recurring live class is still taught by an instructor in real time. Schedule a YouTube Live event for each session, then share its watch-page link so viewers can plan to join. For a continuing schedule, you can create separate events or reuse previous stream settings where available.
An always-on stream instead plays prerecorded video continuously. YouTube’s encoder directory lists a cloud tool described as supporting 24/7 prerecorded streams; that listing shows this category exists, not that YouTube approves every unattended loop. You will need to decide how the stream is hosted and monitored, confirm rights for the material, and plan for what happens if the stream drops. YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours; a longer broadcast may not be captured as a replay.
Confirm your channel can go live
YouTube’s general eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, and be operated by someone at least 16 years old. First-time live access may take up to 24 hours to activate, according to YouTube’s encoder instructions. Check Live Control Room well before announcing your first class rather than assuming access will be ready on the day.

Choose a webcam or an encoder
| Option | Best fit | Setup and control |
|---|---|---|
| Webcam or phone | A straightforward class using the built-in camera and microphone, if they capture the room and instruction clearly. | Simpler to set up. Test the framing across floor poses and transitions, not only while standing. |
| Encoder | A class that needs an external camera, microphone, or more involved production. | Requires encoder software or hardware and YouTube’s stream URL and stream key, but gives you a way to connect external video and audio equipment. |
You do not need to buy equipment before testing what you have. YouTube Help’s “YouTube live streaming tips” says, “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” A stable phone mount or tripod can help hold a wide view, while an external microphone is worth considering only if the test shows that spoken cues are hard to understand from the built-in mic.
Set up and schedule the class
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Schedule the event, select the audience and privacy settings that suit your class, and save it.
- Share the event’s watch-page URL. A scheduled event can be promoted in advance; viewers can set a reminder on its watch page.
- If using an encoder, connect it to YouTube. Enter YouTube’s stream URL and stream key in the encoder. Treat the key like a password; regenerate it if you think it has been exposed. Use RTMPS when your encoder supports it.
- Choose a bitrate your connection can sustain. YouTube’s settings guidance covers bitrate and codec choices; use settings supported by both your encoder and available upload capacity rather than choosing a high bitrate your connection cannot maintain.
Test the view, sound, and upload connection
Run an unlisted test with the same room, camera position, lighting, movements, and spoken cues you plan to use for class. Check the YouTube preview on a phone as well as the instructor’s monitor. Make sure the whole mat and any commonly used props remain visible during seated, reclining, and transitional poses. Listen for clear speech at the distance you will teach from.

Test upload speed, not just download speed. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the total outgoing stream bitrate. For example, if the stream’s total bitrate is 6 Mbps, aim for at least 7.2 Mbps of available upload capacity as a planning target. Available bandwidth can fluctuate, so a speed test does not replace checking stream health during the broadcast. A reliable wired connection is a sensible preference when available.
Start the broadcast and monitor it
- Allow time for setup. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend setting up an encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time.
- Check the Live Control Room preview. Confirm the correct camera and audio are reaching YouTube before inviting viewers into the session.
- Watch stream health during class. Look for connection or quality warnings and respond if the feed becomes unstable.
- End the event cleanly. Stop the encoder after ending the event, then check whether YouTube created the replay.
- Keep a local recording if the replay matters. YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours, but a longer continuous broadcast may not be captured as an archive.
Clear music and other third-party material before streaming
Use silence, original music, or material whose rights explicitly cover both the livestream and any archive you intend to keep. “Royalty-free” or permission to use a track in an ordinary video does not, by itself, establish that live and archived use is covered. Verify the license scope with the rights holder; this is practical platform guidance, not legal advice.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can trigger a warning, a placeholder image, interruption, or termination. Even when you hold a license, YouTube says the rights holder may need to add your channel to a Content ID allowlist. YouTube’s live-stream terms also require creators to have the necessary rights, including music rights.

Troubleshoot common class-stream problems
| What you notice | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The event or preview is unavailable | Live access is not enabled yet, or the channel has an eligibility restriction. | Check Live Control Room and channel eligibility ahead of class; allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation. |
| The stream buffers or shows poor health | The outgoing bitrate is too high for available upload bandwidth, or bandwidth is fluctuating. | Test upload speed, preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and reduce the encoder bitrate if necessary. |
| Viewers cannot see the full pose or props | The shot was framed only for a standing position. | Reposition the camera and repeat the test through floor poses and transitions; check the phone preview too. |
| Spoken instructions are hard to hear | The built-in microphone is too far away or the room is noisy. | Retest from the teaching position and consider an external mic if speech remains unclear. |
| The live stream is interrupted after music plays | YouTube detected third-party content, or the channel is not allowlisted for licensed material. | Use music cleared for live and archived use, verify license scope with the rights holder, and ask about Content ID allowlisting. |
| No complete replay appears after a long session | The continuous broadcast exceeded YouTube’s under-12-hour automatic archiving guidance. | Keep a local recording when a complete replay is important. |
