What is Ara: History Untold?
Ara: History Untold is a historical grand strategy game developed by Oxide Games and published by Xbox Game Studios. The Windows PC game was released on September 24, 2024, according to Xbox’s product listing.
Its premise is to guide a nation through human history by exploring, building an economy, developing culture, negotiating, and competing with other powers. The official design description emphasizes that there are no preset paths to victory, and highlights four systems that distinguish the game: a national crafting economy, simultaneous turn resolution, a non-linear technology tree, and a zoomable world that can be viewed from empire scale down to individual citizens. These are the developer and publisher’s descriptions of the design, not a guarantee that every system will suit every strategy player.
How its central systems shape play
Simultaneous turns change the rhythm
Rather than waiting for every opponent to finish a turn before issuing the next set of orders, players plan during the same turn window and see the results resolve together. This changes the pacing and makes anticipating rivals part of the planning. Xbox Wire describes the map as having no hexes or grids and says the developers wanted choices to be driven by player objectives rather than arbitrary rules. That is the publisher’s framing; it does not establish how the system compares in practice with another game’s turn structure.

Crafting makes the economy a core activity
The economy is not presented as a simple loop of gathering a resource and assigning it to a generic production queue. The official description foregrounds crafting, which makes turning resources into useful goods and sustaining the processes behind them a central part of nation-building. That can make economic decisions feel more connected to how a society develops, while also adding work: players who want to focus mainly on diplomacy or battles may find the production and management layer demanding.
Research is not a single fixed ladder
A non-linear technology tree gives players alternatives in how they develop. Combined with the stated absence of preset victory paths, this supports different priorities rather than requiring every nation to follow the same sequence. The official materials establish that structure, but not a fixed “best” research route; the useful choice depends on the nation’s situation and the player’s aims.
Scale and visual presentation
The game’s world can be viewed at broad strategic scale or zoomed in toward the people who live in it. A launch-era IGN excerpt praised the visual presentation and underlying economy, while also criticizing management tools and interface support. That assessment is a reviewer’s judgment from the 2024 release period, not a claim about the state of every later build.

What reviews say—and what their scores do not tell you
At the time checked in 2026, Metacritic showed a critic Metascore of 74 from 53 reviews and a user score of 6.4 from 59 ratings, categorizing critic reception as “Mixed or Average.” Those are volatile snapshots, so the counts and scores can change. More importantly, the cited critic excerpts are from September and October 2024, before the documented major update a year later.
The excerpts reflect a recognizable split. One reviewer valued the freedom to shape a nation but felt nations could be more distinct. IGN praised the look and the economic foundation but faulted the management tools and UI support, and described leader, religion, and government modifiers as passive. Other criticism raised concerns about diplomacy. These are useful launch-era signals about the game’s complexity and identity, but they do not establish whether the 2025 update resolved any particular issue.
What changed in the documented v2.0 update?
Xbox Wire reported that the Revolutions v2.0 update arrived on September 24, 2025, the game’s one-year anniversary. Its announced additions included a Culture and Influence system, Adaptive AI, distinctive leader and nation traits, and a new map generator, alongside rendering, UI, and performance improvements. In the described culture system, art, music, language, and traditions contribute to Quality of Life and generate Influence.

The game’s official site showed v2.0 as available, but the dated announcement does not establish the live build number on October 3, 2026 or account for patches that may have followed. Nor does the announcement prove that any specific launch-era criticism was fixed. Treat v2.0 as a documented update, not as a verified current-version label or a blanket answer to the earlier reviews.

Where can you play it?
The official FAQ lists PC Game Pass, Steam, and Windows Store. It says there are no current plans for platforms or stores beyond those listed; that is a statement of current plans in the FAQ, not a promise about the future. The game is listed for Windows 10/11, and the FAQ says there will be no physical edition.

What does the Deluxe Edition include?
Xbox’s product page describes the Deluxe Edition as including the base game, an Exclusive Leader Collection, and a Modern Leader Skin Set. The launch article names Charlemagne, Genghis Khan, Yoo Gwan Soon, Hildegard, and Boudicca as the five exclusive leaders, along with five modern leader skins. These are digital edition contents; they do not imply a boxed or physical release.
In its September 2025 update article, Xbox Wire also noted a lower base-game price at the one-year anniversary and two DLCs: the Deluxe Leader Pack and the Official Game Soundtrack, which includes a digital art book. That article records a historical price change, not a current price.
Is Ara: History Untold multiplayer?
Yes. The official FAQ says multiplayer supports 1–36 players, requires a Microsoft Account, and allows players on all release platforms to play together. The official game description says multiplayer supports both synchronous and asynchronous play.

Ratings, accessibility, and cloud play
What is the game’s rating?
The ESRB rates the Windows PC release E10+ for Alcohol Reference, Mild Violence, and Use of Tobacco, and notes “Users Interact.” The rating summary describes resource collection, economic and military growth, and battles with brief scenes featuring gunfire and explosions. The official FAQ also lists PEGI 12 and USK 12.
What accessibility options are listed?
The official FAQ lists text and UI scaling and high-contrast text, with further options available in the game’s Accessibility menu.
Is Ara playable via Cloud Gaming?
The official FAQ names GeForce NOW, Boosteroid, airgpu, CloudDeck, and Shadow PC as cloud gaming platforms for Ara: History Untold. A service’s catalogue can vary by location and change over time, so check the relevant provider for availability where you live.
