Choose OBS if church volunteers need a visual interface for scenes, lyrics, and graphics; choose FFmpeg if the program is fixed prerecorded playback and someone can configure and supervise a command-line process. Neither is inherently more reliable: both depend on a capable computer, stable upload, correct YouTube settings, monitoring, and a recovery plan. This is workflow guidance, not a head-to-head reliability or cost-of-ownership test. OBS and FFmpeg can both deliver a stream, but neither makes it self-healing or removes the need to watch stream health.
What both methods need from YouTube
Enable live streaming and create the event
Enable live streaming for the channel before the first service that depends on it. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to broadcast to the channel.
Use compatible ingest settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant-bitrate encoding (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. Confirm the current options shown for your channel and encoder before the event.

These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular church connection can sustain the rate. Set resolution and bitrate below the upload speed the connection can reliably maintain, with room for normal fluctuations and other network traffic. YouTube’s advanced audio guidance includes stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.
Set up the prerecorded stream
OBS: use the visual workflow
- Prepare the program. Confirm that the video file plays correctly, has the intended audio, and can repeat without an unwanted pause or abrupt transition. Build a scene if you need an opening slide, lyrics, or other overlays. The exact playlist configuration for this church use case is not established in the official sources cited here, so verify the behavior in your installed OBS version before relying on it.
- Connect to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube or the appropriate custom server option, and enter the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. Keep the key private.
- Set output and video. In Settings → Output and Settings → Video, choose a resolution, frame rate, encoder, and bitrate that match the source and your tested connection. For RTMP/RTMPS, use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, never above four seconds. Choose an audio format and rate compatible with YouTube’s guidance.
- Test and start. Run a representative test with the same kind of movement and audio as the worship stream. Check YouTube’s stream-health feedback and OBS’s connection and dropped-frame indicators before you depend on the setup.
OBS’s help documentation says it connects directly to the streaming destination rather than routing the stream through OBS-operated servers. Dropped frames point to a connection that is unstable or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain; reduce bitrate or improve the network path, then test again.

FFmpeg: loop a compatible file
For a single prerecorded file whose codecs and parameters already suit YouTube, a basic looping command can avoid re-encoding:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i worship.mp4 -c copy -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"Replace the ingest URL and key with the values from YouTube Studio. Protect the command and any saved configuration because they contain the stream key. The example uses FFmpeg’s documented -re option to read at the input’s native rate, -stream_loop -1 for infinite looping, and -c copy to copy streams without decoding or encoding. Copying is suitable only when the input streams and container/output are compatible with the destination. If YouTube rejects the format or the file’s parameters do not meet the desired ingest settings, configure encoding instead of stream copy.

For a more complex sequence, such as several files or transitions, the command and filter graph depend on the media and desired behavior; do not assume that a simple loop command creates seamless transitions. Validate the exact sequence and output with a test stream. FFmpeg itself does not provide a church-specific restart supervisor in the reviewed documentation: logging, process supervision, and restart behavior must be configured and monitored in the host environment.
Test, monitor, and plan for long sessions
- Test the real workload. Use representative motion and audio, then check YouTube’s stream-health information. A static title card alone will not reveal every issue that moving video or full audio can expose.
- Watch the connection. In OBS, monitor connection status and dropped frames. With FFmpeg, monitor the process and its logs and ensure someone knows how to respond if it exits or loses the network.
- Keep the source and recovery plan available. Confirm who can restart the encoder, access the stream key, and verify that YouTube is receiving the stream. Looping a file does not itself restore a dropped connection.
- Plan archives separately. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not promise one automatic archive for an uninterrupted 24-hour event. If a recording is needed, arrange a separate recording/archive workflow and verify the current YouTube process.
Copyright and channel considerations
Using OBS or FFmpeg does not grant rights to worship music, backing tracks, video, images, or other material in the program. Confirm that the church has permission or the relevant licenses for the exact music and recordings being streamed and archived, and review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream policies. Reusing material does not guarantee that a stream or channel will avoid claims or other platform action.

Costs and operational trade-offs
YouTube lists OBS as no-charge, open-source software. That does not eliminate the cost of a computer, internet service, staff or volunteer time, power, or maintaining a process that stays running. FFmpeg is a software tool, but the sources cited here do not establish a comparative total cost for a church deployment; the host and technical oversight remain part of the operating setup.
