Use FFmpeg to fit every clip to one canvas and frame rate, normalize the video and audio streams, then join them with the concat filter and re-encode. Different resolutions make a simple stream-copy join unreliable. Once the joined MP4 is ready, FFmpeg can loop it indefinitely while sending it to YouTube Live.
1. Inspect the clips and choose an output format
Before joining, check each MP4’s width and height, frame rate, video codec and pixel format, and whether it has audio. For audio, note the sample rate and channel layout. ffprobe can report these details; for example:
ffprobe -v error -show_streams -show_format first.mp4
Choose a single output canvas and frame rate that suit the intended stream. A 1920×1080, 30 fps output is used in the example below, not a universal recommendation. Avoid enlarging low-resolution footage without a reason: upscaling changes the output dimensions, but does not restore detail that is absent from the source.
If clips have different aspect ratios, fit each inside the same canvas while preserving its proportions, then pad the remaining space. Do not stretch a 4:3 clip to fill a 16:9 frame. FFmpeg’s scale filter documents force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease for fitting footage within the target dimensions and force_divisible_by=2 for even output dimensions.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Normalize and join the MP4s with FFmpeg
When the inputs differ in resolution or other stream properties, use FFmpeg’s concat filter and re-encode to a consistent output. This example assumes both clips contain audio:
ffmpeg -i first.mp4 -i second.mp4
-filter_complex "[0:v]scale=1920:1080:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease:force_divisible_by=2,pad=1920:1080:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2,fps=30,setsar=1,format=yuv420p[v0];[1:v]scale=1920:1080:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease:force_divisible_by=2,pad=1920:1080:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2,fps=30,setsar=1,format=yuv420p[v1];[0:a]aresample=48000,aformat=sample_fmts=fltp:channel_layouts=stereo[a0];[1:a]aresample=48000,aformat=sample_fmts=fltp:channel_layouts=stereo[a1];[v0][a0][v1][a1]concat=n=2:v=1:a=1[outv][outa]"
-map "[outv]" -map "[outa]"
-c:v libx264 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -movflags +faststart joined.mp4
Replace filenames and adjust the canvas, frame rate, and audio handling for your files and installed FFmpeg build. The command is a pattern, not a guarantee that every pair of inputs will work unchanged. Inspect the result, especially where clips meet.

If a clip has no audio
The example uses an audio input from each file. If a clip is silent, either add a compatible silent audio stream for that segment before the audio concat chain, or concatenate video only by configuring the filter with a=0 and mapping no audio output. If some clips have audio and others do not, explicitly provide audio for the silent segments or use a video-only result; do not reference a nonexistent audio stream.
What to check in the joined file
- Play the full output and inspect every transition for black frames, unexpected scaling, or timing glitches.
- Listen for gaps, abrupt level changes, or mismatched channel handling.
- Check the final frame and audio at the end if the file will loop back to its beginning.
3. Choose the right FFmpeg joining method
| Method | When it fits | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Concat filter with re-encoding | Inputs differ in resolution or other stream properties and need to become a consistent output. | Requires processing time and can introduce generation loss, but lets you normalize the segments. |
| Concat demuxer with stream copy | Inputs already have matching streams, including codecs and time base. | Faster and avoids re-encoding, but is not a general fix for mismatched resolutions or incompatible streams. Inaccurate file durations can cause timestamp artifacts. |
| Joining MP4 files at the file level | Not a general-purpose MP4 joining method. | Only a few container formats allow simple file concatenation. |
FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends the concat filter when re-encoding is needed. The concat demuxer documentation describes its stream compatibility requirements and timestamp behavior. Do not assume that changing file extensions or appending MP4 files will produce a valid joined video.

4. Loop the finished file to YouTube Live
FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 option loops the input indefinitely. This example streams the prepared file over RTMPS using H.264 and AAC:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i joined.mp4
-c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -g 60
-b:v 5M -maxrate 5M -bufsize 10M
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv 'rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_ENDPOINT/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'
Use the ingest endpoint and stream key shown in YouTube Studio for your account, and keep the key private. The sample bitrate is not a universal setting. Select encoder settings for your chosen resolution and frame rate, your computer’s encoding capacity, and the upload connection available to the stream.

YouTube encoder settings to check
YouTube’s live encoder guidance, checked October 3, 2026, recommends RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. It lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video options, and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. Its recommendation for stereo audio is 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Recommendations depend on the incoming resolution and frame rate; consult the YouTube Live encoder settings for the current settings for your stream.
| Incoming video format | H.264 bitrate figure published by YouTube (page checked October 3, 2026) |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | Recommended: 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | Recommended: 14 Mbps; minimum: 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | Recommended: 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not guarantees of picture quality or evidence that an upload connection can sustain the bitrate. YouTube says it automatically detects the encoder settings you choose. Test ahead of time with movement and audio similar to the planned stream, then monitor stream health in YouTube Studio.

5. Troubleshoot common join and stream problems
The join fails or the output has the wrong size
Confirm each input path and stream mapping, and check whether the clips contain the audio streams referenced in the filter. Make sure each video branch uses the same target width, height, frame rate, sample aspect ratio, and pixel format. If a source is vertical or has a different aspect ratio, fitting and padding preserves its shape; it will not fill the canvas without cropping or distortion.
There is no audio, or audio disappears at a transition
Check whether every input actually has an audio stream. The sample filter references [0:a] and [1:a], so it cannot be used unchanged for a silent file. Normalize sample rate and channel layout where needed, and either provide audio for every segment or make a video-only output.
There are glitches at a join or loop boundary
Review the joined file at the transition and at the end-to-start boundary. Revisit frame-rate conversion and audio normalization if timing or continuity is inconsistent. If using the concat demuxer for compatible files, remember that inaccurate input durations can produce timestamp artifacts; for mismatched inputs, use the re-encode workflow instead.
YouTube reports unstable stream health
Verify that the endpoint and private stream key are correct, that the chosen output settings match YouTube’s current guidance for the stream, and that the upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate. Lower the delivery resolution or bitrate if needed, test again, and monitor the live control room. A bitrate recommendation alone cannot guarantee a stable connection.
