Recommended Free Tools
For a text-heavy YouTube Live stream, choose bitrate from YouTube’s live encoder table for your selected codec, resolution, and frame rate—not from a special “slides” setting. As a starting point, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30 and 8 Mbps at 720p30. These are general live-ingestion recommendations, not results of a test on educational slides.
Recommended YouTube Live bitrate settings
Use the row that matches the video signal your encoder sends to YouTube. YouTube’s recommendations are for live ingestion; they are not the same as upload-video encoding recommendations.
| Resolution and frame rate | AV1 / H.265 recommended bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K), 60 fps | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K), 30 fps | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p, 60 fps | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p, 30 fps | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p, 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p, 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p, 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube’s recommended live encoder bitrates in Mbps. The same table lists minimums as well: for 1080p30, the minimum is 4 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 5 Mbps for H.264, versus recommended rates of 10 and 14 Mbps. A minimum is a floor, not the quality target to choose when your connection can sustain the recommended setting. YouTube’s live encoder settings are the reference for the matching resolution, frame rate, and codec.
Choosing settings for slides and lessons
Pick resolution for readable text
Choose a resolution that preserves the smallest text viewers need to read. YouTube does not publish a readability threshold for slides or a study comparing slide quality at 720p and 1080p. If text looks cramped or blurred in a representative test, simplify the slide or test a higher resolution rather than assuming a particular bitrate will fix legibility.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use 30 fps when the material does not need smoother motion
For mostly static slides and screen content, 30 fps is a reasonable starting point to test; it is practical guidance, not a YouTube rule for educational streams. At 1080p, YouTube’s recommended H.264 rate is 14 Mbps at 30 fps and 17 Mbps at 60 fps. Choose 60 fps if the stream includes motion that benefits from it, then use the matching table row.
Match the bitrate to the codec
YouTube lists lower recommended rates for AV1/H.265 than H.264 at the same resolution and frame rate. For example, at 1080p30 the recommendations are 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 14 Mbps for H.264. Confirm your encoder and workflow support the codec you select; do not use one codec’s row for another.

Encoder settings and pre-stream test
YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video codecs, and frame rates up to 60 fps. Its guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval that should not exceed 4 seconds, and RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP.
- Set the output format. In your encoder, select the intended resolution and frame rate, then select a supported codec and the corresponding recommended bitrate from the table above.
- Set rate control and keyframes. Use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Check your connection. Run an upload speed test, then test the actual encoder configuration. YouTube recommends a speed test to check upload bitrate, but does not prescribe a universal numeric upload-headroom percentage.
- Test representative material privately or before the event. Include audio, the real slides, transitions, cursor movement, and any other motion that will appear during the lesson. Watch YouTube’s stream health and messages.
- Adjust if the stream is unstable. If the test or live health indicators show problems, lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate and test again. This is practical troubleshooting, not a fixed adjustment sequence prescribed by YouTube.
Do not use upload bitrate recommendations for a live stream
YouTube’s separate upload encoding page recommends 8 Mbps for 1080p standard-frame-rate video uploads. That upload figure is not the live ingestion target: YouTube’s live table recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p30 H.264. Use the live table when configuring an encoder for YouTube Live, and consult YouTube’s upload encoding settings only for prerecorded file uploads.

Latency: when it matters for a lesson
Latency is the delay between capture and playback. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering, and that it matters less when the creator does not interact with viewers. For a lesson with live questions or discussion, lower latency may help; for a one-way lecture or playlist, normal latency may be adequate. YouTube describes the tradeoff but does not prescribe a latency mode specifically for educational playlists. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
Troubleshooting bitrate and stream quality
- Text is hard to read: Check the slide itself and the output resolution; test the actual content at the intended settings. YouTube publishes no text-specific bitrate threshold, so do not assume that raising bitrate alone will make small text readable.
- Stream health reports instability: Recheck the connection and encoder output. Test again after reducing bitrate, resolution, or frame rate until the stream is stable.
- You are unsure which bitrate to use: Verify the encoder’s codec, resolution, and frame rate, then use the exact matching live-table row.
- Your encoder does not offer AV1 or H.265: Use the H.264 recommendation for the settings you can send.
- You copied a number from an upload guide: Replace it with the live-ingestion recommendation for your encoder settings; upload and live workflows use separate guidance.
