YouTube Live Ultra-Low Latency Settings for an OBS Playlist Stream

How to configure YouTube Live ultra-low latency with an OBS playlist, including the 4K and buffering trade-offs, ingest requirements, testing, and fixes.

To use YouTube Live’s lowest-latency mode with an OBS playlist, select Ultra-low latency in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room under Stream Settings → Stream latency, then send your OBS stream using a compatible ingest path. YouTube says most viewers will experience less than five seconds of latency, but this is not guaranteed: ultra-low latency increases buffering risk, is more sensitive to network problems, and does not support 4K. OBS’s playlist controls determine what plays; YouTube’s latency setting determines how the stream is delivered to viewers.

Choose the latency mode that fits your stream

Latency is the delay between an event reaching your encoder and a viewer seeing it. YouTube reduces the player’s read-ahead buffer in lower-latency modes, leaving less room to absorb changes in internet speed. That can make conversation feel more immediate, but it also makes unstable delivery more noticeable.

YouTube mode Best fit according to YouTube Typical latency description Trade-offs
Normal Non-interactive streams No typical seconds figure stated Lowest buffering; all resolutions and live features supported.
Low Streams with limited audience interaction Most viewers under 10 seconds More buffering than normal may occur; 4K is unsupported.
Ultra-low Real-time audience conversation Most viewers under five seconds Greater buffering likelihood and sensitivity to network ingestion issues; 4K is unsupported.

These are YouTube’s descriptions, not a latency guarantee for a particular OBS setup, network, or viewer device. For a pre-recorded playlist that does not need live chat or real-time reactions, normal latency may provide a steadier viewing experience. Choose ultra-low when immediate interaction matters enough to accept the added buffering risk. YouTube explains the latency modes and their trade-offs.

Set YouTube Live to ultra-low latency

  1. Open the Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, create a live stream or open the stream you plan to use. Depending on the interface, find it under Stream or Manage.
  2. Change the latency setting. Open Stream Settings, locate Stream latency, and choose Ultra-low latency. YouTube’s interface labels can vary slightly.
  3. Check the ingest protocol. If you select HLS, YouTube turns off the Ultra-low latency option. HLS uses segmented delivery and has higher latency than continuous RTMP. Choose an ingest path compatible with the latency mode you want; do not assume an HLS segment setting can restore ultra-low latency. YouTube’s HLS setup guidance gives segment durations of 1–4 seconds for HLS, but that does not enable the ultra-low option.

Build a playlist scene in OBS

YouTube’s latency setting and OBS’s playlist are separate parts of the setup. For multiple media files, use OBS’s VLC Video source rather than the standard Media Source, which is for a single file. OBS describes VLC Video as supporting a playlist of items. VLC must be installed for the source to appear; for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Install VLC. Install the version appropriate to your OBS installation and operating system. OBS documents support for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
  2. Add the playlist source. In the OBS scene where the program should appear, use Sources → + → VLC Video. Add the media files to the source’s playlist.
  3. Set playback behavior. Choose whether to loop or shuffle the playlist, and check how the source behaves when it is not visible. The documented default is to stop when hidden and restart when visible. If scenes switch during your program, verify that this behavior matches your intent.
  4. Check audio and video in the scene. Preview the full playlist, including transitions between files, and confirm the intended audio is present. OBS playlist behavior does not itself set YouTube viewer latency.

OBS’s Media Sources documentation lists the VLC Video controls, including playlist looping, shuffle, visibility behavior, and network caching. It does not establish that a particular cache value or playlist arrangement reduces YouTube delivery latency.

Configure the encoder and test the full path

Set resolution and bitrate for a stable upload connection rather than chasing a nominal delay. YouTube recommends assessing available upload bitrate with a speed test and testing with representative audio and movement. Its encoder guidance provides settings by resolution and frame rate; follow the current recommendations there for your output format and connection: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Ultra-low latency does not support 4K. If 4K is essential, use normal latency; YouTube’s encoder guide identifies 2160p as optimized for normal latency. Test the complete path before the event: OBS playlist playback, audio, encoder output, YouTube ingest, and playback on a viewer device. During the stream, monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages. If health problems appear, reducing bitrate or moving to a less aggressive latency mode may help, but neither change guarantees a fix.

Understand DVR and viewer controls

DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume during a live stream. Disabling it prevents seeking back during the live event, although the recording may still be available afterward. You can change DVR while live, but the change applies to viewers who start playing after the change. For streams longer than 12 hours, DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable; Apple TV, AirPlay, and older app versions may have lower limits. YouTube’s DVR guidance covers these limits. DVR is separate from latency mode; YouTube does not say that disabling DVR reduces end-to-end delay.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • Ultra-low latency is unavailable: Check whether the stream is configured for HLS. YouTube disables the option when HLS is selected; use a compatible ingest path instead.
  • The picture buffers or stream health degrades: Ultra-low mode leaves viewers less buffer for network variation. Check upload capacity and YouTube’s stream-health messages; lower the bitrate or switch to low or normal latency if needed.
  • The stream is not 4K: This is expected in ultra-low and low latency modes. Use normal latency if 4K delivery is required.
  • VLC Video does not appear in OBS: Install VLC, ensuring its architecture matches OBS; OBS documentation specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
  • The playlist stops or restarts after a scene change: Inspect VLC Video’s visibility behavior. Its documented default is to stop when hidden and restart when visible.
  • Viewers report a delay above the stated typical figure: YouTube’s under-five-second description applies to most viewers, not every viewer or network. Check ingest health and playback conditions; the OBS playlist itself does not promise a particular end-to-end delay.
