Create the event in YouTube Studio, then give the encoder that event’s YouTube server URL and stream key. The VM hosts the encoder; Google Cloud’s separate Live Stream API is not required for direct streaming to YouTube.
Choose the right streaming setup
For a single prerecorded file sent directly to YouTube, the simplest architecture is a VM running an encoder that connects to YouTube Live. Google Cloud describes Compute Engine as a service for creating and running virtual machines on Google infrastructure. The VM does not create your YouTube event or issue its stream key.
| Architecture | Use it when | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| VM runs an encoder and streams directly to YouTube | You need a remote host to play a prerecorded file and send it to a YouTube event. | You manage the encoder process, the YouTube connection, and the VM’s compute and network capacity. |
| Encoder sends to Google Cloud Live Stream API | Your project needs Google Cloud’s managed ingest, transcoding, and HLS/DASH output for downstream playback systems. | This adds a media service and a different workflow. It is not a prerequisite for direct YouTube Live ingestion. Google documents SRT and RTMP inputs and HLS/DASH outputs for the API; those describe the API, not YouTube’s ingest settings. |
Do not copy a Live Stream API input URI into an encoder configured for YouTube. For the direct workflow below, use the server URL and key shown for your YouTube event.
Before you set up the VM
Confirm rights to the recording
Check that the church has the necessary rights for everything in the recording, including worship music, performances, sermon illustrations, and licensed media. YouTube’s livestream terms say the person providing the content represents that they have the necessary rights to exploit it on Google services, including applicable music licensing rights. A platform account or permission to use YouTube Live does not grant rights to third-party works. Whether a particular church license covers online streaming depends on its terms and jurisdiction; verify that separately. Making a stream unlisted does not establish that it is exempt from rights enforcement.

Check channel eligibility and create the event
YouTube’s current live-streaming guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days; streamers must be at least 16. Check the channel’s eligibility in YouTube Studio before planning the broadcast. Create or schedule the event there, enter its title and other metadata, and choose its privacy setting. A scheduled broadcast of prerecorded material is distinct from uploading a video or setting up a Premiere; do not assume every prerecorded format satisfies every current YouTube policy.
Prepare the file and estimate the VM cost
Choose the final video file before selecting a VM. Resolution, frame rate, audio, duration, encoder settings, and the VM’s available CPU or hardware encoding capacity all affect the setup. A command-line Linux VM may not have an interactive desktop or hardware acceleration, so do not assume a GPU encoder is available. Test on the instance you actually plan to use.

There is no meaningful single VM price for this workflow without a machine type, region, run time, disk, and network transfer estimate. Check Google Cloud’s current pricing for those inputs before launching the instance, and include the time needed for rehearsals as well as the broadcast.
Create a VM and install an encoder
- Create a Compute Engine VM. In Google Cloud Console, create a Linux VM in the region and machine configuration that fit your file and expected encoding workload. There is no universal machine type recommendation: source media and service conditions differ, so validate performance with a test.
- Connect to the VM. Use the SSH access method documented for your Compute Engine instance. Restrict access to the people who need to administer it.
- Install FFmpeg or another encoder. Follow the installation instructions for the VM’s operating system and use an encoder build with the codecs you intend to send. Google Cloud’s Live Stream API documentation uses FFmpeg as an example encoder, but its API-targeted examples are not YouTube commands.
- Place the recording where the VM can read it. Confirm the file path, available disk space, and that the file plays with its intended picture and sound before starting the stream.
Connect FFmpeg to the YouTube event
In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, open the event’s stream settings and copy the server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder guidance says to enter the event’s server URL and key into the encoder. Keep the key private: do not commit it to source control or expose it in public scripts, screenshots, or logs. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.

The command below shows the shape of a direct FFmpeg-to-YouTube command, not a tested, ready-to-run command. Replace the output destination with the exact endpoint and key for your event. Confirm that the FFmpeg build, source file, selected codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and endpoint syntax match your current event and YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
ffmpeg -re -i service.mp4
-c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -g 60
-c:a aac -b:a 128k
-f flv "<YouTube RTMP(S) ingest URL>/<STREAM_KEY>"
Here, -re paces file input in real time rather than sending it as fast as the encoder can read it. The example uses H.264 video, AAC audio, and a two-second keyframe interval at 30 frames per second. Those are illustrative choices, not a guarantee that they suit every file or event. Avoid storing a real key in a reusable command history or a script with broader access than necessary.

Set video, audio, and connection settings
Use the settings YouTube shows for the event and the capabilities of the file and encoder. YouTube’s encoder guidance accessed in 2026 recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe frequency, with an interval no longer than four seconds. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for applicable workflows, and AAC or MP3 audio; availability depends on the workflow and encoder.
| Setting | YouTube guidance | Practical check |
|---|---|---|
| Transport | RTMPS is recommended. | Use the server URL provided for the event and confirm the encoder is sending to that endpoint. |
| Bitrate mode | Constant bitrate (CBR) is recommended. | Choose a rate the VM can encode and sustain over its network connection; there is no one bitrate established for every source and resolution. |
| Keyframe interval | Two seconds recommended; do not exceed four seconds. | For 30 fps, a 60-frame GOP corresponds to two seconds, as in the illustrative command. |
| Audio sample rate | 44.1 kHz for stereo; 48 kHz for 5.1 audio. | Match the source and intended channel layout. |
| Audio bitrate | 128 Kbps for stereo; 384 Kbps for 5.1 audio. | Confirm channel layout and the encoder’s actual output. |
| Resolution and frame rate | Use the settings appropriate to the event and source; no universal choice is established here. | Avoid upscaling a low-resolution recording or selecting settings the VM cannot encode continuously. |
For an unattended broadcast, the encoder must keep pace with playback while the VM has enough compute capacity and network egress to send the stream continuously. A short successful launch does not prove a long service will run reliably. Rehearse for the expected duration, or as much of it as practical, using the same file, settings, VM, and network conditions.

Preflight, go live, and end the stream
- Start the encoder early. Check that it opens the correct file and is sending to the scheduled event’s endpoint.
- Check the Live Control Room preview. Wait for YouTube to show the incoming stream. Inspect the image, listen to the audio, and verify the event title, privacy, and other metadata.
- Test realistic content. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the actual stream. Confirm expected duration and check that the video and audio stay in sync.
- Start the event deliberately. Once the preview and event details are right, use the controls in Live Control Room to start or go live for that event.
- Monitor the stream. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages, and keep an eye on the encoder process. Do not assume that a process still running means YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
- End it in both places. Stop the encoder and end the event through the workflow shown in YouTube Studio. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but check the event and archive after ending rather than treating archiving as a guarantee for every setting or account.
Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube shows no incoming stream: Check that the encoder uses the current event’s server URL and stream key, that the destination syntax is correct, and that the VM has network connectivity. If the key was reset, replace the old one in the encoder configuration.
- The stream key no longer works: Copy the key from the correct event’s stream settings. If it may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder before retrying.
- The VM falls behind or the output stutters: Check CPU use, encoding settings, source resolution and frame rate, and network continuity. Reduce the encoding workload or select a VM with capacity suited to the tested workload; do not assume hardware acceleration exists.
- Preview appears but picture or sound is wrong: Verify the input file, selected audio stream, codec compatibility, sample rate, channel layout, and event preview. Test with the actual recording rather than relying on a command completing without errors.
- YouTube reports stream health or configuration warnings: Read the specific Live Control Room message and compare the outgoing codec, bitrate mode, keyframe interval, and audio settings with current YouTube guidance.
- The video ends unexpectedly or the archive is missing: Check the source file’s duration, encoder logs, whether the process stopped, and the event/archive status in Studio. Automatic archiving guidance for streams under 12 hours does not guarantee every archive will be available in every case.
