You can update a YouTube Live demo without changing the FFmpeg-to-YouTube connection—but the reliable approach depends on what “playlist” means. A running FFmpeg process can refresh a live HLS playlist (.m3u8) as it changes; the official FFmpeg material does not establish that editing a static local concat-list file will make a running process reload it. If your current setup uses a local list, plan an input change rather than assuming edits will take effect. Keep the YouTube output configured, test the transition, and confirm it in Live Control Room.
First identify which playlist FFmpeg is reading
Two different input arrangements are often called a playlist, but they behave differently while FFmpeg is running.

FFmpeg’s format documentation describes the concat demuxer, while its HLS demuxer source shows live-playlist reload behavior. These are not interchangeable input types. If you do not know which your command uses, inspect the input URL or file and the command’s demuxer options before changing anything.
Use a live HLS manifest for a sequence that must update
If your production pipeline can publish HLS, make the manifest the changing boundary: the HLS producer updates the sequence and provides the segments, while FFmpeg reads that live input and continues sending its output to YouTube.

- Arrange the HLS source. Have the process that controls the demo sequence publish a live manifest and segments representing the current sequence. Confirm that FFmpeg’s machine can access both the manifest and every referenced segment.
- Point FFmpeg at the live manifest. Configure the input as the live HLS source rather than as a local static concat list. The exact command depends on your FFmpeg build, input location, media formats, and existing output options; there is no universally safe replacement command without those details.
- Keep the output destination in place. Leave the FFmpeg output connection directed at the existing YouTube ingest URL and stream key. YouTube uses those values to connect an encoder to its ingest feed; changing the input playlist does not require changing credentials if the output connection remains configured.
- Change the sequence at the HLS publisher. Publish the updated manifest and make sure its referenced segments are available when FFmpeg reloads it. The demuxer’s reload support is about the live HLS manifest, not an arbitrary local text file.
- Verify the actual handoff. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health when the manifest changes. Listen for audio continuity and watch the video through the transition before relying on the setup for a live demo.

Do not assume an HLS reload is a seamless transition
A reloaded manifest can expose a new sequence to FFmpeg, but it does not by itself guarantee a gapless cut. The result depends on whether segments are available on time, whether timestamps line up, whether the playlist publisher updates as expected, and whether adjacent media use compatible codec parameters. A video can therefore continue reaching YouTube while still showing a pause, discontinuity, or audio issue at the input transition.

- Test a real sequence change with representative video movement and audio.
- Check that the next segment exists and is reachable before the manifest points FFmpeg to it.
- Inspect timestamps and media compatibility across the transition.
- Test with the FFmpeg version and build you will use for the event; reload timing and behavior are implementation-dependent.
YouTube Help advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
Keep YouTube output settings matched to your stream
Changing the input playlist does not remove the need for a valid, stable output profile. YouTube’s English-language encoder settings page recommends RTMPS for secure ingest and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS, with AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, a 2-second keyframe interval, and a maximum keyframe interval of 4 seconds. Its recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so choose the row for the actual output profile rather than treating one bitrate as universal.

For a concrete example, YouTube’s English-language settings page lists 10 Mbps as the recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p at 30 fps. YouTube Help’s current guidance also recommends upload capacity with 20% headroom. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees of the bandwidth a particular stream needs. Both figures and settings refer to YouTube Help pages accessed in 2026; the pages do not give a clear publication date. The edited list does not change what viewers see
If FFmpeg reads a local concat list, editing that file is not a documented general reload mechanism. Confirm the input type. To support in-session updates, move the changing sequence to a live HLS manifest and test that architecture, or use a separately tested method appropriate to your FFmpeg version.

The HLS update arrives late or not at all
Check that the updated manifest is the one FFmpeg actually reads, that the manifest is reachable, and that every newly referenced segment is available. HLS reload timing depends on the playlist and implementation, so do not expect an exact universal refresh interval.
The stream stays connected but the transition stutters or loses audio
A stable YouTube output connection does not make source transitions seamless. Check segment timing and availability, timestamps, and compatibility of the media at the handoff. Re-test with representative audio and movement, then inspect the preview and stream health in Live Control Room.

The YouTube preview or stream health is poor
Review the actual output codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and available upload capacity against YouTube’s current settings for that profile. YouTube recommends CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval (no more than 4 seconds), and 20% upload headroom; the recommended bitrate depends on the selected codec and video profile.
