Bungie confirmed that unauthorized artist decals appeared in Marathon after a former Bungie artist put them in a texture sheet later used in-game. The company said its existing art team did not know about the decals. Fern Hook, who publishes as Antireal, had said the graphics were lifted from poster designs she made in 2017. In December 2025, Hook said the matter had been resolved to her satisfaction with Bungie and Sony Interactive Entertainment, but public reporting did not disclose the terms.
What did Fern Hook accuse Bungie of using?
In May 2025, Fern Hook, known professionally as Antireal, said Marathon used decals and graphics from poster designs she made in 2017. Contemporary coverage showed visual comparisons between her work and images from the game’s website, press kit and alpha. The allegation concerned particular graphics, not the game’s overall art direction. Windows Central reported on Hook’s allegation and the comparisons; Engadget covered the dispute as it emerged.
What did Bungie confirm?
Bungie acknowledged that unauthorized artist decals had appeared in the game. In a statement reported on May 16, 2025, the Marathon development team said: “We immediately investigated a concern regarding unauthorized use of artist decals in Marathon and confirmed that a former Bungie artist included these in a texture sheet that was ultimately used in-game.”
The team added that the issue “was unknown by our existing art team” and said it was still reviewing how the oversight occurred. That is Bungie’s stated explanation; the available public reporting does not establish further details about how the texture sheet passed through the studio’s process.
